While driving approximately 70 mph on the highway, my vehicle’s sunroof suddenly and violently shattered without any warning. There was no impact from debris, no vehicle in front of me throwing objects, and no prior damage to the glass. The explosion was extremely loud, resembling a gunshot. The sunroof glass appeared to burst outward and then collapse inward, sending broken glass downward. Thankfully, my vehicle has a canvas sunshade beneath the sunroof, which was closed at the time. The sunshade prevented glass from falling directly onto me and my passenger. Without the shade, we likely would have sustained injuries from falling and flying glass. There were no road hazards, weather anomalies, or external impacts that could have caused this failure. The failure appears to be spontaneous. This incident created a significant safety hazard due the sudden loud explosion at highway speed the potential for serious injury from falling glass the risk of loss of vehicle control due to distraction or injury the possibility of future occurrences in similar vehicles I believe this may be a manufacturing defect involving the tempered glass panel.

The coolant system and oil housing filters. The entire coolant system components fails in this vehicle after 60,000 mile due to the parts not being all aluminum. This fix alone is about 8k from the BMW dealership. This isn’t fair to the customer! this needs to be a recall! the parts needs to be more stronger and never replaced with the same manufacturer part! this fails the entire engine system! the car will have multiple issues just because of this constant failing area of the vehicle!.

Description of the problem: •component/system that failed: the engine starter, which is subject to an open recall issued September 23, 2025. The starter was not replaced during a service visit. The vehicle no longer exists due to the fire, but the VIN and service records are available for inspection. •safety risk: the starter malfunction caused the vehicle to catch fire while parked, creating a serious safety risk to myself, my child, and others nearby. •problem reproduction/confirmation: the fire and defect were confirmed by BMW’s inspection as originating from the starter irregularity tied to the recall. •inspections: the vehicle was inspected by BMW north America’s engineering team after the fire, and insurance representatives confirmed the total loss. •warning signs prior to failure: there were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms indicating the starter defect before the fire. Additional context: the vehicle was serviced at an authorized BMW dealership on December 3, 2025. I was not informed of the recall, and the starter was not replaced. The vehicle caught fire on December 19, 2025, resulting in a total loss. While my insurance resolved the acv, this incident was caused by BMW’s recall-related defect and procedural failure. I have escalated this matter to BMW north America and am requesting a resolution that restores me to a comparable position (replacement vehicle or financial support). Official confirmation: BMW north America confirmed in a confidential letter that the fire originated from the starter defect tied to the open recall. This letter is available for review upon request.

“the pcv valve heater (positive crankcase ventilation heater) on my 2006 BMW 330xi failed and caused an engine bay electrical fire. This component is under an active BMW safety recall for fire risk. The failure happened suddenly while driving, with no prior warning lights or symptoms. Smoke began coming from the engine area, followed by visible flames. My safety was put at risk, and I immediately exited the vehicle. The vehicle became inoperable and was towed by the city of chicago. The car has since been declared a total loss due to the fire. The vehicle is currently in the city impound and available for inspection upon request. The problem has not been inspected by a dealer yet because the vehicle was destroyed before I received the recall repair. ”.

My parked vehicle, with the ignition off, caught fire while I was inside the gym. Within10-15 mins of entering the gym, the gym intercom announced that a car matching the description of my vehicle was on fire on the parking lot. When I went outside, firefighters were actively extinguishing the flams and cutting in the hood of the car. The vehicle was ultimately destroyed and considered a total loss. The vehicle has an active recall warning of a potential fire risk, even when the car is parked and turned off. The fire occurred without any action on my part, and I could have been seriously injured or killed. Also, others as well.
Driving on interstate I-287 around 10:35am on October 10, 2025 (new jersey) around exit 47 (vicinity) suddenly the sunroof sounded like an explosion. Parked on the roadside . . . Noticed that the roof is exploded (broken pieces of the glasses were pointing upwards like a volcano) and other broken pieces were captured on the sunscreen liner cloth sliding which was completely closed from inside. Called the insurance and reported as if something hit the roof or not sure what happened. My friends tells me that there have been many such incidents when the sunroof explodes on Bmws, and specifically when the glasses looks like a volcano. Dealer says this is not possible. I decided to claim my insurance (with $1,000 deductible as my cost). Please note that due to the distress and fear of the noise and incident I had no energy to waste arguing and delaying my vehicle warranty claim or repair through the dealer. Claimed the insurance (comprehensive claim) . . . Note: not a single other scratches or anything other than the glass (sunroof) was damaged . . . I feel like this is a defective sunroof that exploded (the sound was very loud and scary). If the sunroof liner cloth shade was not closed, the shattered glasses would have seriously injured me (and my husband).

I just became aware from consumer reports about an upcoming recall on Bmws because of a potential fire hazard with the engine starter relays. I own a 2021 BMW 330i which is one of the models listed. I entered my VIN on the NHTSA and BMW websites and both sites indicated my vehicle has no open recalls. According to NHTSA, BMW will start notifying owners on November 14 about the recall. In the consumer reports article and several other articles I read about the recall, owners are being directed to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings and other vehicles. Owners are expected to wait until November 14 to see if their specific vehicle is included in the recall. This is not acceptable! NHTSA needs to hold BMW and other manufacturers accountable for informing owners of a recall in a timely manner; a month and a half delay in notification is unacceptable. Owners need to know if their specific vehicle is one of the ones being recalled. I understand the potential delay in scheduling the repairs because of a shortage of parts. However, there should not be a delay in informing owners about the recall status of their specific vehicles. Please escalate this to whomever is involved in the decision making process at NHTSA.
My BMW 330i 2021 caught on fire while I was driving. Smoke came from the hood, and I open the hood and seen the fire, and I called the newark NJ fire department. See attached photo of the BMW after the fire.
Not sure what malfunction part but car steering locked up. Could not steer the car. Brakes failed. Car accelerator engaged. Car slammed into pole. Car is totaled I only had it less than 3 weeks. BMW 3 series 2024.
My 330i 2018 BMW has a cracked in the oil housing unit. This is due to BMW putting plastic parts instead of aluminum. After researching this I found thousand of people complaining about the sane thing. The car overheats and sometimes the oil gets mixed into the coolsnt system b causes more damage. This seems to happen on cars with mileage between 60-70 on engines b46, b48 n b58z.
2 low coolant warnings within 4 months ended up being an oil filter housing failure, leading to oil and coolant mixing and leaking. This failure could have lead to catastrophic engine damage. An ase certified shop is doing the repair for around $2,950.

My car has ver been wrecked or received any damage to any part of it. While driving to work the following warning popped up on screen. Restraint system warning, functionality of the airbags, seatbelt tensions, belt force limits reduced.
Failed component: driver side (left) exterior mirror available for inspection: yes safety risk: the mirror does not stay securely unfolded, requiring manual adjustment while driving, which creates a major distraction and increases the risk of an accident. If not manually secured, it shifts unpredictably due to wind resistance at city speeds, creating a dangerous blind spot that makes lane changes and merging hazardous. Glass isn't adjustable with buttons. The heating function is non-operational, which may impact visibility in cold/wet conditions. Problem reproducibility: the issue is persistent. Dealer or independent confirmation: the problem has not been diagnosed by a dealer, but has been check for dtc and there are no faults. Multiple reset attempts have been performed, including idrive reset, manual folding/unfolding, and a BMW battery reset procedure, cls was allowed to shut down fully, with no resolution inspection by manufacturer, police, or insurance: no warning lamps or symptoms prior to failure: none. The mirror was working perfectly before it failed suddenly with no warning signs, noises, or gradual malfunction. No known fault codes prior to the issue. Additional details: the mirror does not respond to electronic adjustments and must be manually repositioned. The glass will not adjust either unless by hand. When fully open or fully folded manually, makes a loud, forceful clunk and becomes slightly harder to move, but can still be adjusted moved with some effort. It opens far past the normal open position. In any other position other than fully extended or fully closed, it moves freely due to any external forces such as wind force while driving or lightly pushing it. The passenger-side mirror functions normally, including folding, heating, and glass adjustment. No obd error codes, warning lights, or system messages have appeared related to the failure. Mirror has not had any physical damage or abuse in any manner.
The vehicle has persistent issues with its software and safety systems, creating significant safety risks. The remote software upgrade feature fails to install, despite indicating it is “ready to install” with preparations complete. This prevents critical updates that could address safety and performance defects. BMW customer support was unable to resolve the issue, and a local dealership confirmed no hardware faults but could not address the software issue due to limitations as a non-BMW-certified service center. Several critical safety features also do not function properly. The blind spot warning system has never issued alerts, leaving the driver unaware of vehicles in adjacent lanes. The forward collision warning system has never activated, even in close proximity to other vehicles. The lane departure warning fails to consistently activate, while lane keeping assistance operates only intermittently, despite being designed to engage above 40 mph. Additionally, the parking collision warning and rear cross traffic warning systems have never provided alerts, even when obstacles or approaching vehicles are present. These malfunctions severely compromise the vehicle’s ability to prevent accidents and ensure safety. The vehicle also intermittently displays drivetrain failure warnings, stating the car can still be driven but should be serviced. Upon inspection, no issues were identified. Consistent fault codes for the active kidney grille shutters appear, but no check engine light is illuminated. These recurring warnings create uncertainty about the vehicle’s reliability and the accuracy of its diagnostics. The combination of these issues places the driver, passengers, and others at risk. A thorough investigation is needed to identify and resolve the root causes. All systems are available for inspection upon request.
BMW updates the car software by sending remote software updates (rsu) using the the over the air (ota) method. The updates include driver assistance updates and fixes. My car amongst many other BMW owners worldwide are reporting on the internet that the rsu process is not working and that the updates download ota to the car but they do not do the final installation step. Fyi ota is currently the only method BMW uses to send updates to the vehicles . BMW replies to queries about the failure by directing owners to their dealers. The dealers than update the latest rsu at their facility . Cars in warranty are not charged by the dealers , but cars out of warranty are quoted in excess of $400 to install the updates. Fyi updates are sent several times per years so those which require dealer service to install are faced with excessive cost for the updates. I currently refused to pay the dealer to install the latest rsu and my car is now at risk of not receiving the latest safety updates. Below is a snapshot of my car screen showing the update in limbo and requiring a dealer fix to perform "step 3" [xxx] thank you , [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Car coolant is leaking due to a bad plastic coolant vent line. I had this issue in January 2023 where it was covered under a recall. I tried contacting the BMW dealership who fixed this recall and they stated there was no current recall. Although is the same issue again.
It's been about 3 weeks since the most BMW recent software update, (11/2023. 50) has downloaded to my vehicle via the BMW connected drive services. This is the second time that over the air, BMW connected drive upgrades have failed to install on my vehicle. As before, the upgrade has downloaded to the automobile but will not activate as has happened successfully in the past. The above upgrade is supposed to solve a safety/visability problem, a stated legal requirement, pertaining to the position of the heads up display. I have consulted with BMW customer relations and technical advisors. I received and followed several sets of recommended self-install procedures without success. I was the advised to contact my BMW service center in seattle who would be able to install the update. However, they, in turn, advised me the problem was related to a weak battery. My local mechanic subsequently test the batter and indicated no discernible problem and no current need for its replacement. I’ve seen a variety of internet comments indicating other owners with similar unresolved problems with the BMW system. There appears to be no hardware or direct software install alternative. There is nothing like a recall in place to solve this problem. Given this latest update is required in part to meet safety requirements related to the vehicle heads up display, I am hoping your assistance will resolve this matter quickly. Thank you in advance -.
This BMW vehicle's odometer readings are inconsistent and inaccurate resulting in overage of mileage for lessee. This cars BMW tires were not verifiable to be from BMW and tires subsequently failed within 15,000 miles. No entity at BMW, not the dealership, not the sales, not BMW financial services or BMW of north America llc could provide any information regarding the original tires or provide any warranty information regarding the tires - this impact mileage efficiency, miles per gallon and is a way to game the systems. BMW front sensors on act erratically sometimes working and sometimes going off without anything present, during rain/snow sensors would constantly go off for no reason. Issues have been raised through certified mail to BMW and all have been ignored. There is no accountability regarding the tires with no warranty that fail, inaccurate odometer readings, car sensors and we request an investigation into these three matters.
The lower active grill on my 2020 BMW 330i failed. I purchased the vehicle on January 24th. On February 27th, the check engine light came on. I called the dealership I bought it from. They told me they did not have the necessary technology to diagnose, so I took it to a BMW mechanic. The mechanic told me it is a known warranty issue with this particular BMW, and that BMW should fix it for free under the limited warranty bulletin. When I tried to contact BMW about this issue, they refused to pay for it stating that my specific VIN number was not affected by this issue, and therefore they wouldn't pay for it. This makes no sense seeing as it is a clearly known issue with an active bulletin out for the same exact year make and model as my vehicle. The production clearly did not change enough to fix the issue, so my vehicle should be included in the limited warranty/recall. The flaps can get stuck closed, which can cause the car to overheat quickly, which can be extremely unsafe. BMW refused to even look at the vehicle to see if the issue was in fact the warranty issue without me paying a $250 diagnostic fee, when I had just paid to have it diagnosed at a different BMW mechanic.
Multiple codes came on right after I had gotten my thermostat and my water pump fixed. However it ended up being that there was more leaks throughout the rest of the car. The car has currently cost me $3400 to fix and it’s still not fixed because nobody can figure out where the actual leak is coming from. The coolant is leaking and nobody can figure out where, it’s been having jerking issues since it started leaking and I read on other BMW’s that the coolant leaks into the head gasket, causing the engine to blow.
Sunroof exploded out of nowhere. The glass shattered everywhere.

My 2019 BMW 330i has a recurring cooling system defect, including coolant leaks, heater inoperative, and risk of engine overheating. The defect began while the vehicle was under warranty and was repaired by BMW, but it recurred. BMW later instructed me not to drive the vehicle due to safety concerns, yet declined responsibility and transportation. The vehicle remains unsafe to operate.
A check engine light or check control message is present, and one or more of the following faults may be stored for the active air flaps behind the kidney grills. This is a known issue with other models. (si b17 06 18).
In October of 2023. I notice low coolant notification came on screen. Checked coolant saw it was low. Added coolants. 3 days later same notification. Took vehicle to shop who stated the coolant cap seal was broken, so I had them replace the coolant cap. 3 days later the same low coolant light came back. Every few days I had to put coolant in my vehicle. I went through 2 bottles of coolant. Over the christmas holiday Dec/2023. I dropped my vehicle off at a shop. The oil filter housing and cooler gaskets was bad. BMW replaced this piece from a metal part with a plastic piece. This is my only vehicle and I had to pay for this expensive repair so I could get back and forth to work. Prior to me having the repair done, when I was trying to figure out the problem. I noticed a lot of online information of the same issues for 2017 BMW 330i. The shop . Did the repair told me he had done about 10 of these repairs for the same year/make and model. ,the past few months. I had to pay $2,637. 20 for this repair. There is clearly a notable problem with coolant leaks. I make sure I have vehicle serviced when the notifications come on the screen and have documentation to show this. Please look into this issues.
I was driving on the 5 north freeway near downtown stockton at around 9:30 am when, the sunroof on my car exploded. There was no visible objects or debris that had gone airborne that hit the car. The sunroof was closed and the sun shade was opened. The loud explosion sent glass throughout the interior of the car, left my ears ringing for ten minutes, and nearly cased me to get in a car accident. I inspected the interior of the car and could not find any debris associated with the incident. This incident posses a big danger and could even lead to serious injuries.
I have been in the motorcycle industry 1988-2000 and the auto industry since 2000 to current, a break for about 10 years in there. I am fairly mechanically knowledgeable. On 8/1/2 was showing a customer a BMW 330i that we had in inventory. The customer sat in the driver's seat, started the engine and popped the primary hood latch. I was at the front on the vehicle. Since I deal with every make, model and years finding the secondary latch release can be challenging. Initially, I felt under the hood at the center, not finding it I proceeded to feel my way down both sides of the hood. Still not finding the release I inserted my right hand into the grill at first grill opening center right (drivers side). I was feeling inside to find the elusive release. About 1-2 seconds of feeling around I felt the a pressure against my hand. There isn't much space in the grill openings and very quickly I could not remove my hand in time, it was pinched between the vertical grill vent and, at that point unknown, active grill venting. My hand was stuck and the active grill venting continued to close since it indicated the cycle was not complete. I was stuck and it was very painful. My right was stuck in the first opening and I tried to overpower the electric motor with my left hand on the second grill opening (drivers side) I could not overpower it. I slowed it but it continued trying to close. I told the customer that I was stuck and in pain and that I needed help. I could not pull hand out since it was never intended to have a hand in there, the edges where sharp plastic on the inside, almost like a barb. It took me, being one handed and both his hands pushing on the vents to over power the system. Without the second adult male, I was trapped. Issues: 1. Excessively overpowered 2. No reverse sensor like auto up passenger windows 3. No break-away safety system.
During my ownership of this vehicle, it started developing a terrible vinegar/mildew smell when turning on a/c a while ago, which is really unpleasant. This is concerning to me because I am afraid of potential health risks, and as a premium vehicle, this type of problem is not acceptable in my opinion. I am also an owner of a 1998 BMW that exhibits zero ac issues, so it is quite frustrating that a ~20 year newer vehicle has this issue and this feels like a design flaw of my newer vehicle. I have spoken to my dealer couple times and they claimed changing my air filter cabin would help, but it hasn’t. The dealer has explained to me that they would need to perform a deep clean in the ac vents to completely remove the smell and I would need to pay out of pocket, which I don’t believe is fair. As a result, I have contacted BMW hq, but they have told me that this is not something they can assist with. Therefore, I am reaching out to NHTSA to request further assistance.
Unknown. I went to do the smog check on my car and I found that I have a recall and the description on the paper is positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) valve heater.
Out of nowhere with only 1 day warning car requested coolant refill. After refill within 10 minutes car engine ran hot and completely stopped on the expressway. I’ve read hundreds of reviews online and youtube where this exact same thing has happened to others with this same car.
I received a warning on the dashboard that the tires needed inflating and that I should not drive the car over 80 miles per hour. When this happened the communication system on the car failed. I could not use the telephone or the direction feature. I do not know if other parts of the car also failed. When the tires were re inflated, these other features returned. This has happened twice. (in addition the tires needed reinflating on one or two other times. ) BMW offers a courtesy service to reinflate the tires so that they don't maintain a record of the problem and they are unable to add a note to their service record to document the problem. (BMW san francisco).
When I was driving on suburban roads with speed limit of 45 mph, I received a waring from my vehicle saying "engine high temperature, drive moderately". After sometime, it said "engine overheated stop carefully". During the first warning, I felt loss of acceleration power and during the second warning I felt completely no power in acceleration that too when I was yielding for a left turn which was life threatening, luckily the oncoming traffic slowed down. Otherwise I would have ended up in life threatening crash. During both warnings, I checked the engine temperature gauge in the instrument cluster and the engine temperature was not even 50% of the maximum temperature in the gauge. After the warning, I slowly made it to a nearby parking lot and opened the hood and did not physically feel any excessive heat for an engine not to function. I regularly service my vehicle and my vehicle is not due for any kind of service for the next 2000 mile as per the onboard vehicle status. The next day I started the vehicle to help it to climb the tow truck ramp and at that time, for the very first time I received a warning saying engine coolant is very low. I have never received this warning since I have owned the car until then. I have two concerns, 1. The temperature gauge did not show a high temperature, only 24 hours after the electronic engine high heat notification, the low coolant warning came in which is weird and my vehicle isn't due for any service. 2. None of the above should result in a sudden loss of acceleration power which could have resulted in a fatal crash in my case. I'm a mechanical engineer with a strong background in automotive occupant safety (airbags/seatbelts) and that's why I see this a very serious incident that needs to be looked into so that it doesn't occur for anyone else in the future.
Cylinder head hose expansion tank replacement - coolant leaks out completely - this repair has been done twice on this vehicle with only 26k miles. BMW USA states no recall but the dealership informed me they have issued a bulletin but just put back on the defective hose since no other replacement hose is available. . . I'm paying out of pocket for the repair.
Fuel pump leaking gas due to cracks on top of fuel pump.
In March 2022 I was driving home from work and I noticed smoke coming from under my hood. I was able to make it to a mechanical shop close by. I was informed that quick release coupling of the ventilation line o fthe cylinder head had to be replaced. BMW part # 17129845173. As a result of this malfunction all of the coolant drained from the car which caused the overheating. In August of 2022 I received a letter from BMW USA that stated "during a recent quality analysis it has been determined that the quick release coupling of the ventilation line o fthe cylinder head could break resulting in coolant loss. The letter said u shold bring it to my local BMW dealership to be replaced free of charge. I brought it to the dealer and they replaced it with BMW part # 17129845173 (same exact part number). I asked if I could be reimbursed since this is what happened to my car. The sales associate said I have to go thorough BMW America who said, yes this is the exact same part and the current problem is what happened to you in March but they would not reimburse me for the almost 800. 00 I paid to get it fixed before I received the recall letter. The BMW representative then proceed to tell me " MA’am, let me remind you that you drive a luxury vehicle so next time you have a problem I would suggest pulling over on the side of the road and towing it to a dealer”. I informed this representative that I was thinking of my safety. I am a single female, in the dark, with my car smoking on the highway and my first instinct was not to pull over on the side of the highway, wait for a tow truck, then find my own ride home from a far away BMW dealership. I have all documentation that includes the initial work, the recall letter from BMW and the work done at the BMW dealership showing that it was the exact same problem. I am seeking reimbursement of the original work as this was a known problem and was alerted by BMW indicating that this could happen to vehicle and needd to be fixed.
