6 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2012 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/09/2017

Takata recall: I recently bought my used car from a Nissan dealership. Within the first month of operation, I noticed that a "passenger restraint system malfunction" would appear in the center console. It has not gone away since then. It will only display this message in the beginning when I turn my car on, while it's stationary. After that it just display's the airbag symbol in the bottom left corner of the odometer. This has me a little concerned since I do not want to be driving with anyone else if that means the passenger airbag will not deploy in case of an event. When I did my research online, I found out that several of other BMW owner where complaining about the same issue.

8 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2009 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/25/2016

There is an active recall campaign 08v-384 for defective front passenger airbags that will not deploy and protect the passenger occupant in the event of a severe accident. The active recall campaign which is extended for 10 years only covers model years 2004-2006 of the BMW X3 despite the first generation of the vehicle being produced from 2003 - 2010 and vehicles from all other years exhibiting the same symptoms. For instance my own vehicle is model year 2009 and exhibits all symptoms of the air bag issue as described in the recall campaign notice however I have no matter of recourse and have been unable to petition the dealership or BMW north America llc to remedy the issue as they have refused citing the recall campaign makes them liable only for those specific model years which is ridiculous since this is a serious safety issue and is not receiving as much attention due to the massive takata recall. I would like to petition the NHTSA to have BMW expand the airbag recall campaign to cover additional model years of the same production generation of the X3.

9 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/05/2015

My wife has a 2005 BMW X3 with an airbag warning indicator light illuminated on the dash. The problem/symptom is that there is a little red light in the instrument cluster that looks like an airbag is deployed along with a yellow light above your head that says "passenger airbag off". So in the event of an accident the passenger airbag would not deploy. There is a sensor under the passenger seat that is basically there so that if a person that does not weigh a certain amount, like a child for example, is sitting there the bag will not deploy because it has been known to cause problems for smaller individuals. However, since the sensor becomes defective, the system defaults to airbag off mode and therefore you never have an airbag regardless of who is in the passenger seat. The dealer told me they could do nothing for us because the VIN number did not match the recall, but Bmwusa is the one that indicated that there is an extended warranty specifically for this problem with the airbag light and that it would be covered regardless of the VIN matching the recall. Riverside BMW has refused to help us with this matter but stated that if BMW of north America authorized the fix, they would repair the seat sensor mat. Can you please help us resolve this issue with BMW. Thank you, mark sullivan.

11 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2011 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/03/2013

The passenger restraint system is malfunctioning. This is a common problem that BMW X3 cars have. We have the sports edition and despite several attempts to fix the problem the sensor in the mat continue to indicate the air bag will not deploy if we have an accident despite how severe that accident is. We have contacted the BMW dealership and they pretended of knowing nothing about similar complaints or of a recall on the sensor in the seat mat. It will cost us about 1,000 dollars to fix. Yet most to all BMW owners of the X3 series, especially the sports edition have the same problem.

12 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

The passenger airbag sensor has continuously stayed lit since initial activation, indicating there is no occupant in the seat when one is present. The airbag system will not deploy in the event of a crash because of this issue. A recall has been made by BMW on this same issue and has classified it as an airbag mat sensor issue with my year, make and model included. However, my VIN is not showing up as a defective vehicle when the exact same issue is happening. This is a safety issue, not cosmetic. If any issue presents itself that will inflict harms to occupants, it should be a mandatory recall regardless of VIN. BMW is not standing behinds it's customers to protect the safety of them and their families. Gross negligence.

13 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/05/2012

"passenger airbag off" overhead console light is illuminated intermittently even when 140 lb passenger occupies the front passenger seat. Sometimes when passenger moves around in the seat the light will go away. Talked to service advisor at BMW of sterling, virginia on 4/5/12. They acknowledged four facts (1) it is a passenger seat occupancy detection mat failure, and (2) if the light is on in the event of an accident, the passenger airbag will not deploy no matter how severe the accident is, and (3) the mat in question was replaced on 02-16-2007 at 40,788 miles for an identical problem under manufacturer defect code 6577081500, and (4) there is a recall for the issue, but my VIN is not covered under the recall. They told me they will not cover the previous repair and will charge me $1,290 for it. Research on this web-site shows NHTSA active ea08001 pertains to an identical issue. This is a serious safety defect that the manufacturer has already acknowledged on certain cars and they should cover my car for the same defect as well.

14 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

The passenger airbag sensor light and dashboard airbag light both turned on shortly after purchasing our pre-owned 2006 BMW X3. This means that our passenger airbag will not deploy in the case of an accident. The BMW dealership has diagnosed the problem to be the passenger seat mat. I saw that there is a recall on some 2006 X3 seat mats, but was informed by BMW that my VIN number is not included in the recall. It seems very odd that our car was not included in the recall, yet the exact same part is faulty.

15 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

Started the car and the airbag warning lamp came on and will not go off. The airbag has not been deployed and there has not been an accident. The passenger airbag status lamp is also on all the time. I am concerned the airbags are not working. The warning lights have been on for about 2 weeks.

16 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/11/2009

The contact owns a 2004 BMW X3. She states that she noticed the passenger side frontal air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel indicating that the air bag system is inoperative. As a consequence the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible. She contacted the dealer and the manufacturer and was advised that because her VIN number was excluded from the VIN range for recall #08v384000 (air bags:frontal) they would not assume responsibility for any repairs. The failure and current mileages were 57,000. Bl.

17 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2005 BMW X3

To whom it may concern; I am a canadian citizen, however this complaint involves a vehicle originally purchased in the USA. I bought a 2005 BMW X3, which is exhibiting the issue exactly as described in NHTSA campaign number: 08v384000, as follows. . . . Read more...

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

The contact owns a 2004 BMW X3. Whenever a passenger is seated in the front passenger seat, the passenger side air bag light indicates that the air bag is deactivated. As a result, the passenger side air bag would not deploy in the event of a crash. Through research, the contact found NHTSA campaign id number 08v384000 (air bags:frontal). The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact believes that the vehicle is being excluded because it was imported into the united states.
