The front passenger seat occupancy sensor mat (cis) in my 2018 BMW X3 failed at 56,000 miles. This failure is confirmed by the specific BMW fault code 930a1c (seat occupancy detector malfunction) stored in the advanced crash safety module (acsm). The component is currently installed in the vehicle and available for inspection. This defect poses a severe safety risk: the system fails to consistently detect a seated front passenger. As a result, the passenger airbag may be disabled and fail to deploy in a collision, significantly increasing the risk of injury or death. The dashboard displays a "passenger restraint system" malfunction warning, accompanied by an airbag light and chime. The issue is intermittent and load-dependent. It triggers specifically when an adult passenger occupies the seat for extended periods (e. G. , highway driving), indicating a physical fatigue failure of the sensor mat grid under compression. I diagnosed the fault using BMW factory-level diagnostics. However, both the local BMW dealership and BMW north America have refused to cover the diagnosis or repair under the existing warranty extension (sib 72 01 25) for this exact component, stating my specific VIN is excluded despite the vehicle exhibiting the known safety defect.

I’m writing to escalate an unresolved issue following a recent airbag takata recall repair performed at BMW of manhattan on my 2007 BMW X3 VIN [xxx] ) , license [xxx] prior to the recall service, there were no airbag or srs warning lights on my dashboard. Immediately after the repair, however, the airbag light appeared, and I have since been informed by the dealership that it is unrelated to their work and my responsibility to address — despite this issue arising only after their service. This raises serious safety and liability concerns, especially considering the recall involved the airbag system. I respectfully request: a formal investigation into the cause of the warning light a no-cost diagnostic scan by the dealer to confirm or rule out installation error assistance in resolving the issue promptly under BMW’s recall and warranty obligations. I have documentation from the service visit and can provide photos or service reports upon request. I was never given a document when I first picked up my car and would like to know what was exactly done to my vehicle since your service advisor strongly believes information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Passenger seat occupancy mat in the seat failed which disabled the passenger airbags. So it is very unsafe to drive the car now. This problem applies to many other BMW cars for which the warranty was extended. Unfortunately my car is not included in the warranty extension and out of pocket cost to repair it is $2500. I can’t afford to fix it. I believe that many other owners experience the same problem leading them to drive unsafe cars or disabling the system using aftermarket solutions. I truly believe that for the safety reasons BMW should extend the warranty for the model of my car.
The passenger restraint system malfunction error came out several times since last month.

1- passenger restraint system malfunction error codes- related to wiring or front passenger seat- long timeframe and expense to diagnose 2- engine mounts broken oct 2023 and again Aug 2025- known issue by BMW service- high repair cost & repeat failure 3- front crash assist will brake for shadows caused by trees or adjacent trucks and has nearly caused accidents.
Intermittent, but frequent failure of seat occupancy sensor on front passenger seat. Appears to be related to occupancy weight sensor. As sensor is not functioning properly, passenger airbag is being unsafely deactivated, leading to lack of airbag deployment if a front end collision were to occur. Problem is reproducible, but has not been taken to dealer, nor has it been inspected. Warning alert displays, then turns off, then returns frequently while the front passenger seat is occupied.

Airbag malfunction. The warning on the car is passenger restraint system malfunction.
For about 1 year now when there is someone in the passenger seat the car will randomly stop recognizing the seat is occupied and deactivate the air bags on the passenger side front. I took the car to BMW where it was diagnosed as a faulty seat mat. I called BMW corporate to try to get this issue resolved and they were unable to cover it under any warranty. After the battery replacement the car has lost all communication with the passenger seat safety restraints and now has a permanent air bag light.
Passenger seatbelt sensor warning failure.
With only 41,289 miles, "driver restraint system malfunction" notification came on soon after the car was started. BMW dealer advised that it was due to faulty knee airbag module on driver side (fault code 930949-short circuit to ground). The wiring harness going to the knee airbag may have been rubbing against the support tube of the instrument panel. Cost to fix is parts $1,288 and labor $1,282. Total cost not covered by BMW since the car is few months over 4 years old. This wiring faulty seems to be a major concerns for owners as this relates to electrical quality control and should be a recall by BMW.
This is the message I get: "driver restraint system malfunction. Passenger knee airbag rewired to control module . Carefully drive to the closest service center. Driver restraint system is reduced. Increased risk of injury in case of a collision. Continue wearing safety belt. Driver restraint system malfunction. " I went to cavender BMW and was told the problem is with the passenger knee airbag rewired to control module. The cost would be $1,400. I have 24,122 miles on the car. My salesman said that there have been quite a few of these problems. It seems there should be a recall if that is the case.
Received warning on screen. “driver restraint system malfunction carefully drive to the closest service center driver restraint system is reduced. Increased risk of injury in case of collision. Continue using safety belt. ” I took the car in, and this was the diagnosis: “driver restraint system malfunction. Passenger knee airbag rewired to control module” 24,122 miles on the car. $1400.
The driver passenger restraint system light comes on which is a manufacturer defect that should be covered for the life of the vehicle (this is not a wear-and-tear) component. I called BMW and was told that the part is out of warranty. I would like an investigation of this part for all BMW X3 as the defect can result in fatalities.
After a collision, the driver side airbag exploded and a large piece of metal was projected from the airbag and into the driver's lung. The surgeon removed a gold colored disc from the drivers lung. (see photo) further, the driver had a large laceration to their chest and shoulder that appears to be the result of shrapnel. (see photos).
I continue to get airbag warning light and front passenger seat occupant detection malfunction. I was told by local mechanic that acsm fault codes are 930a60 and 930a1c.
Airbag lamp remians on due to failed passenger seat occupancy detection mat. Honolulu BMW dealer claims recall 08v384000 was performed July 18, 2008- which is the exact same date listed in the recall as BMW's report date to NHTSA. The recall campaign and procedure did not get published or begin for nearly a year later. The recall campaign asks that a small sticker be affixed adjacent to the VIN tag- there is no sticker, nor is there evidence of a sticker ever having been there ( I know what it should look like). The vehicle has not been repainted.

1. My car is very old and has 189,000 miles. Takata airbag recalls are now known and issued by the nhsta, it shows that I have 6 recalls and BMW does not see the recalls. As well as my brakes they are super soft and the only thing I did for the brakes is replace new brake pads they are oem and also my emergency parking brakes are not working. It is avaible for inspection. 2. My safety while driving the car is at risk because I dont know if the airbag will work or fail at any moment. 3. The problem has not been solved and BMW seattle states that, "we do not see any recalls, and I am not saying that there isn't but because of the age of the car I don't know. " BMW seattle service receptionist states. 4. The vehichle has not been inspected for any safety recalls or notices. I have tried to call them about the safety and they always deny and say I dont know. 5. First it was the engine warning and now the low tire preasure light. But I always keep my car on top of things. But like I said 6 recalls that BMW don't see and I have called them about is very concerning for my safety and they safety of my passengers as well as kids that ride with me.
The contact owned a 2014 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, she lost control of the steering wheel, the vehicle suddenly jerked to the left, and she crashed into a cement light pole. The chassis stabilization warning light was illuminated intermittently. The driver's side air bag had deployed. The contact stated that she hit her head on the steering wheel but had declined medical attention. A police report was filed. The contact made a local dealer aware of the failure; however, the vehicle had not been taken to be diagnosed or repaired, and the contact was informed the VIN was only included in an emissions recall. The contact stated that the obd monitor was removed when the vehicle was previously impounded. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and was deemed totaled. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 74,526.
Dealer states my occupancy detection mat was already reworked, however the original mat is still in the seat and no evidence exists to show what was done to prevent future fatigue of the mat. The date code on the mat is 2005 and the dealer stated it only needed replacing if it showed visible cracking during inspection. They stated it wasn't required to replace it but the date of warranty started from date of inspection.

While the car was still under warranty, I got an error message about passenger restraint malfunction. I took to the dealer and was told that it was caused by an ipad found under driver seat. They turned off the warning. Three months later, I get the same message again. The car is now out of warranty and I was told the error is for knee airbag wire that would take 10 hours to get to and repair, if that’s the problem. The cost will be $3800. I decided to wait. Car has 53,000 miles on it. First time I took to the dealer was on December 20,2022. Malfunction light came back on April 28,2023. I couldn’t get an appointment until may 31, 2023.
Passenger airbag warning lights on/off for about a year. Currently the car has 60,000 miles. When I mentioned to dealer, (car in for emission recall), I was informed that the occupancy detection mat was faulty and needed to be replaced ($1821. 04). If not replaced, vehicle would not pass mass state inspection. Had the work done at BMW dealer to have it replaced, as the car is due soon for an inspection sticker.
