While driving, an error message appeared on the car screen that said: passenger restraint system malfunction: contact BMW carefully drive to the closest service center. Passenger restraint system is limited. Increased risk of injury in case of a collision. Continue wearing safety belt. 1) what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? passenger restraint system 2) how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? increased risk of injury in case of collision 3) has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the dealer ran a diagnostic and no fault was found. They tried to claim that there was water on the seat because an umbrella was on the seat. It was not raining before or during the time the message appeared. The umbrella has not been used for quite some time and was not wet. 4) has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? just the dealer. 5) were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? none. This appears to be a random deactivation of the passenger restraint system.

Problem is that the display says "passenger restraint malfunction" -- which brings safety concern. Upon online search, it is likely caused by design flaw of passenger occupancy detector. Here are some reasons why it is design flaw (I. E. Not just individual failure) 1. There has been a recall for the same problem for earlier year models (2006-2007 etc). It seems the other years have the same problem (previous recall wasn't a complete fix) 2. There is actually a third party electrical device online that bypass passenger occupancy detector (so that the car thinks passenger seat is occupied all the time) -- which indicates the commonality of the problem because it even became a profitable market.

In may 2022, BMW of bellevue performed recall service on my BMW X3 with a car wash. Within miles of leaving the dealership, the car displayed a warning "passenger restraint system: malfunction. Continue wearing safety belt. Consult nearest service center. " my understanding is that the airbag will no longer deploy in an accident, posing a serious risk to my family. Both BMW of bellevue and eastside bavarian have confirmed the issue. Eastside bavarian confirmed that the defect could have been triggered by the dealership's service. BMW of bellevue denies responsibility, and has quoted $3k to repair the airbag. Based on internet searches, this error message is a frequent defect in Bmws. Attached is a photo of the error message and two invoices from BMW of bellevue: the first is for the recall and the second is for their inspection of the fault.

Front passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor (oc3) mat. The air bag is on for a while "passenger restrain system", nothing really happened it appear one day and never left.
I have contacted NHTSA and BMW several times. I want this in writing in the case myself or my children are injuried when in this vehicle. My BMW X3 is my only form of transportation the engine light is on and it has started to smoke twice when engine is off. I just purchased the car second week of March 2022. It is hard for the car to accelerate and once the car is stopped at light or stop sign, the car does not have enough power to drive away or pull off. The car rpm goes very high and then low. This issue is unsafe and unfair that a customer can not drive their vehicle to work and appointments for my son with autism as well as my other 3 children. The burden is on BMW and NHTSA to remedy this issue. I will be contacting my local congress person to address this issue is well.

I just purchased a BMW X3 2007 the 2nd week of March 2022. Immediately, after driving home and parking the car. I turned the car off and the car began to make a loud noise and the engine start smoking very bad. I contacted BMW via email, and was told that there is not a remedy to the recalls effecting my car. The BMW X3 2007 is my only form of transportation and BMW cannot fix the problem. This car can catch on fire or worse kill me and children in the fire in the car. After research this is an ongoing problem with BMW. BMW should be liable for any damages caused my this recall. I have car that I cannot drive because it is not safe to drive, by no fault of my own.
My digital gauges were frequently going off center in my vehicle. I scheduled service with the dealer however they did not have a loaner available for weeks so they scheduled the appointment for a few weeks out, my car subsequently completely died on the road and after a minute or two I was rear ended by a truck and the car was completely totaled.
The passenger side weight sensor that indicates whether it is safe for the airbag to fire is failing, giving a repeat error. It has put individuals sitting in the passenger side in potential harm's way if we were to get in an accident. It is available for inspection upon request. The problem has been reproduced by the dealer. They want an exorbitant amount of money to fix it. Prior models had the same defect, and were subject of recalls/repairs/warranty extensions. Not so for this model-year. The dashboard warning lamp indicating that the passenger airbag sensor is defective has lit intermittently.

Front passenger seat occupancy mat defect causes disabling of passenger airbag. Recalls have been issued for the same issue in other models. Issue confirmed by dealership. Persistent warning lamp alert.
The airbag light is on our BMW and my 16 years daughter is driving this car. I cannot believe that BMW did not issue a recall. According to repair pal: "what are the symptoms of a bad air bag occupant sensor? failing occupant sensors can show one of two symptoms. They may stay on at all times, causing the passenger airbags to stay active even when a passenger is not present. Also, they may not operate at all, which prevents the airbags from activating when a passenger is seated in that seating position. Also, for most systems, the airbag or srs warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster, prompting the driver to service the system.

I call the brooklynbmw dealer to schedule a recall repair on three items for my truck and I was told it would takes days for the repairs and I would have to get my own means of transportation during this time even after I stated I have an elderly mother whom lives with me and that I would need some type of transportation during that time and was told there was no loaner car to offer me and that I would have to pay $40 a day for a rental car. This is an inconvience since I should not be responsible for out of pocket expense for the companys negligence of defective/cheap/recalled auto parts. My car is drivable and the inconvience is not of my fault.
Restraint system intermittently malfunction. Getting malfunction notification after vehicle start moving and sometimes when it's stationary. Some time message on display says passenger restraint system and sometimes additionally to passenger, driver restraint system comes up. When check with dealer and after paying for diagnostic, verdict was that main airbag control module must be replace because at the time when malfunction message is displaced, all airbags are turn off and if this were to occur during accident there will be no active safety future (airbags) which will increase the risk of bad injury or death.
The contact owns a 2004 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60mph, she dozed off behind the wheel, when the vehicle crashed into the rear of a tow truck. As a result, the front end of the vehicle was damaged. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained injury to the head, bodily soreness. Medical attention was required. No police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard however, the vehicle was then towed to the contact’s residence. The vehicle was diagnosed by an air bag specialist where it was determined that the air bag was not connected. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the air bags failed to deploy due to minimal impact. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number 08v384000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, the contact had not received a response back. The failure mileage was unknown.

My vehicle has the ' defective takata airbag ' and BMW refuses to recall and replace the airbag. . They would rather pay damages after the fact then correct the problem !.
The steering angle sensor has faulted, at around 60,000 miles. This fault results in possible airbag failure, in conjunction with inability to perform safety breaking mechanisms, as well as disabling the cars 4x4 stability control features. BMW as well as other BMW third-party mechanics have told me this is a reoccurring problem and could pose a serious danger if in an accident. BMW officially told me to put a complaint in so that a recall could be performed. I will not pay 2000 for my airbags to work, as it is a feature required by law to operate properly. I will upload all necessary documentation if needed, should this complaint be taken into consideration.

Nhtsa website claims that my vehicle has had an unrepaired recall. The recall is for: front passenger seat occupant detection mat: this safety recall involves the front passenger seat occupant detection mat. Depending on seat configuration and vehicle geometry, the mat can fatigue during field usage depending on the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit. Specifically, over time micro-cracks could develop in the side flanks of the mat. If a micro-crack leads to a break of a conductive path, the system will recognize a failure. Consequently, the front passenger air bags with the exception of the head protection system will be deactivated.
