BMW X3 owners have reported 25 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2012 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/17/2020

My front passenger airbag seat occupancy sensor mat will intermittently malfunction. At times, the front passenger airbag will turn off, even with a passenger in the seat. If this were to occur, during and accident, with deactivation of the front passenger airbag there is increased the risk of injury or death.

2 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/22/2020

Repeated passenger airbag/ restraint system malfunction. When this fault happens, the airbags on the passenger side will not inflate in the event of an accident, creating a serious safety hazard. First time the fault occurred at 1341 miles, when the vehicle was stationary and the passenger seat was not occupied. Dealer then replaced the occupancy sensor. The fault returned a month later at 2219 miles when a passenger was adjusting the seat during a trip. Dealer found no persistent fault and just secured the connectors.

5 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2013 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

As with other BMW's, these too have faulty occupancy sensors which should not be going bad across other lines. There is no reason this vehicle should not be included in the recall for exactly the same reason as others are recalled for faulty sensors.

6 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2018 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

2018 BMW X3 m40i: upon start up the vehicle displays a warning seatbelt restraint system malfunction. the car the enters a limp mode and says to drive to the nearest BMW service center and that some safety features are unavailable. Power assist steering no longer works, and the vehicle defaults to 4wd mode. Additionally, it further states airbag functionality is limited, and crash avoidance is unavailable, but that driving is still possible! what's disturbing is that I discovered that many other late model BMW owners are reporting this same issue. The few that have had it resolved said it's a sensor failure in one of the front seats. This sensor is tied to the restraint system and the airbag. BMW service center has attempted to fix this malfunction on my X3 on three separate occasions without success. I am worried that my airbags or seatbelt will fail in a collision.

7 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/29/2017

Pertaining to BMW recall campaign 17v-605. This recall has been going on for more than two years and the manufacturer does not have any idea when parts will be available. The part in question is available for purchase from dealers. I don't feel that BMW is handling this recall properly, especially as it concerns passenger safety. The affected part is the passenger seat airbag sensor mat.

8 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/18/2017

Head protection system was deactivated the air bag warning lamp illuminated and the air bag "on-off" lamp illuminated as well. After purchase there was no illumination of these lights and then about 2 years later while driving in the city at about 45 mph, both lamps illuminated when my son and I were heading to the store. I called BMW and they told me then that it was probably due to a cracked seat mat sensor and a recall on those sensors was being extended for 2006 X3 models. I called our local BMW today to schedule a repair of the seat and have the car parked in the garage since August 2017 due to a possible vehicle safety issue with a system failure of airbag deployment. My son has been unable to use the car for college which is 4 hours away. Now I would like to understand why this vehicle is not considered under the extended warranty notices of 08v384000 or 17v605000.

12 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

I took my vehicle for an oil change and other minor services and the mechanic advised "srs light on for passenger seat occupancy sensor". The passenger air bag on-off lamp and the air bag warning lamp have both been illuminated simutaneously for several months. I called BMW customer relations and was advised that my vehicle does not fall under the current front seat occupant protection mat recall.

13 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/05/2011

Front passenger seat air bag occupant detection sensor mat is defective. Manufacturing date of my vehicle is 1/1/06 - six weeks after manufactuing date of recall 08v-384 for this issue. BMW customer relations informed me that the warranty on this item has been extended to 10 years. However, my "authorized BMW service center" did not notify me of this and estimated $137 for diagnostic work and $1242 to repair. Recall should be expanded so that owners of these vehicles are notified that their airbags may not activate in a crash. Extending a warranty that is not communicated in writing to vehicle owners or shared when brought in for servicing on it does nothing.

14 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2008 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/02/2011

Passenger seat alarm would go off constantly without anyone or anything in the seat. BMW replaced sensor under warranty. Problem appeared to be fixed until the following summer 2012 when alarm on seat would go off again on a regular basis. BMW refused to replace until complaint filed and I stated it was a driving hazard due to attempting to fumble with belt while driving to stop alarm by securing belt. BMW offered to replace alarm sensor I had to pay $300. 00 for labor. This was late sept 2012. Shortly after due to cold weather alarm did not go off any longer. I did not have alarm sensor replaced because it was now working properly until April of 2014 when alarm again began to sound and continued throughout this past summer. According to internet and forums on the internet this is a problem that has existed on X3s from the first year the car was sold. BMW apparently avoids doing anything to prevent this from occurring even in the newer models. This is an annoying and dangerous situation which should be addressed . In my complaint they stated I didn't accept their offer even though the alarm was no longer going off and that my warranty was over. Someone needs to make them accountable and their cars safer. .

16 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

BMW has refused to repair my 2006 BMW X3 even though it has the same symptoms in the NHTSA campaign number 08v384000. This is a safety defect in the airbag passenger seat sensor mechanism! I am now faced with paying an exorbitant charge to have the problem fixed. The problem causes the forward passenger seat airbag to not work in a collision.

18 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I have a 2004 BMW X3. There is a recall on my year and model vehicle for faulty airbag sensors that cause the airbags not to function in a crash. My car is displaying the symptoms of the problem as described in the recall notice. BMW is not including my particular car in the recall. This defect is a safety hazard to my wife and I. It is my wish that BMW will expand the recall to include all vehicles that have this defective condition.

19 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/10/2008

Air bags in BMW X3 manufacture date Sep 2005. My vehicle is fully loaded and the airbag sensor is defective in the passenger seat according to BMW tests ran on the truck. This is the same issue identified in NHTSA campaign number 08v384000, however BMW will not rework the sensor issue. They are telling me that I have to pay over 1100 euro, as I am station in germany and purchased the vehicle through military car sales. Since it is the exact issue found in the same year and model of the recalled vehicles this should be considered and repaired. Yet BMW states that my vehicle was not I=one of the over 200000 which was included in the recall. How am I to determine if my VIN number was affected. My vehicle was produced during the same time frame and it was special ordered. Please assist if possible.

20 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/09/2008

I own a BMW X3 that has the front air bag mat sensor problem that has been noted worldwide BMW recall. The problem is that they have not noted the X3 with sport seats being part of the recall, although all other models with the same seat has been noted. I just had my X3 serviced, and also ask them to repair the seat mat that has failed, but the dealer stated that this seat was not listed, but did have the common failure that has brought forward the recall. I am asking that NHTSA notify BMW and insist that they have left out the X3 with sport seats.

21 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/14/2008

Serious saftey issue the seat occupancy detection mat in the front passenger seat was replaced by BMW once in this vehicle while it was under warranty under manufacture's defect code: 6577081500. It has failed a second time at 82,000 miles. There is a recall for this issue but the VIN is not covered in he recall. My vehicle was apparently manufactured right when BMW started installing updated sensors. This is not a coincidence. It has failed twice. It is a serious safety issue.

22 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/30/2006

I have been having problems with my 2004 BMW X3 2. 5l sav in where the airbag light for the front passenger seat will illuminate indicating that the airbag has been deactivated while my wife is sitting in the passenger seat. I have brought my truck into the dealership (jmk BMW in springfield, NJ) about 4 times and unfortunately each time the issue has not been resolved. I contacted BMW of north America to report the problem. They were in contact with my dealer and even requested to have my truck brought back to the dealership to have it looked at on more time (by this time it would be the 4th trip back to the dealership for the same problem). After a couple of days the dealership called me stating that the problem has been fixed. But it has not. I reported the issue again to BMW of north America and a couple of days later they told me that the have used every possible solution on my truck and that there is nothing more that can be done to resolve the problem. Thatã‚??s right! BMW of north America told me that there's nothing more they can do. They told me that they had engineers from germany look into the issue, they have had numerous technicians sit in the passenger seat to see if the airbag indicator illuminates (mind you they probably weigh at least 75lbs more then my wife), they moved the sensors on the seat, replaced the sensors, and more. Yet the problem remains. I have communicated with the manager at the parts and service department of the dealership and I am waiting word back to see what the next step is in regards to my problem because I will no accept the fact that BMW of north America is telling me that there is nothing more that can be done to fix a problem that their product is having. I hope this information helps you as I hope it will help me in getting my problem fixed and hopefully get this information out there to other drivers of the X3 to make sure they know of this issue and try and get it fixed right away.

23 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

The contact owns a 2004 BMW X3. While driving at an unknown speed, the air bag deactivation light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the air bag sensor was malfunctioning in the front passenger seat. The contact had the same failure repaired two years ago. The current mileage was 93,500 and failure mileage was 20,347. Updated 11/17/08 updated 11/18/08.

24 Front Air Bag Sensor Control problem of the 2004 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/10/2004

Passenger airbag off light comes on very occasionally (3-4 times in 13 months) when a passenger is properly seating in the front passenger seat. The light stays on for several minutes and typically goes out and then comes back on again for a few minutes. Then, it will not occur for several months. The problem has been reported to the dealer several times and they simply say they cannot fix a problem that they can't find. The have opened a "case" to collect information but have not rectified the problem. They say that BMW is collecting information. They cannot definitively tell me how the airbag system will perform if the light happens to be on when a vehicle crash occurs. They do insist that the front airbag will deploy even though the light says the airbag is off but they don't know whether the side airbag will deploy. My primary complaint is that they seem to treat this issue very lightly, both at the local dealer and at the national customer service offices.
