Nhtsa: please help, our 2008 (besides all lost time for the repaired recalls) our 2008 BMW X3 is suffering the exact as in the recall below; NHTSA 14v176000, the BMW dealer replaced the camshaft position sensors due to "engine problems"July 2020,miles 135,000 this did not fix the problem. That BMW dealer, nashua nh then called us to say it would be $4,500. 00 to fix. Unsafe to drive, it lost power by 70% or greater-my wife, and I have been nearly _rear ended when this occured at higway sppeds-and slower local speeds ie 65mph or 30 mph limits. . . . . We had to stop driving for life safety. 1. How did BMW get away with not including the other yrs with same engine safety issues(ours 2008) and why did a BMW serv. Advisor replace parts for over $1000. 00 knowing that a BMW serv. Bulletin had cited the manufacture defects? 3. Please help with recourse? I am sending title copy for ownership, I am awaiting copies of repairs by BMW (they are being slow / delaying) I am collecting all repair receipts at this time. Again: the vehicle was moving and lost power, stalled and eventually started with lost power.

Vehicle stopped in the middle of the road and sensors lite up and vehicle stalled. Mechanic determined it was the timing chain, warranty company demanded engine be opened up to check values, found timing chain bolt broken off in the engine not to be found. Warranty company blamed bolt and refused to pay repairs, new engine required since bolt could not be found. None issue with BMW.

Jan/25/2019 4p cst, wife was driving at low speeds, car showed "engine oil pressure low" warning, and then stalled at the intersection of 15th st se and 5th st se, minnesota, mn. The vehicle was towed to motorwerks BMW service dept, 1300 american blvd w, bloomington, mn 55420. Service advisor, lorren, suggested that the timing chain broke, and has caused catastrophic, irreparable damage to the motor, and a new motor would be required. Now, I'm no car expert, but there 1 thing for sure that there no way a timing chain should just break like that, and destroy the engine, unless there a major design flaw so, I did some digging, and there are a lot of similar cases for 2013 X3 28i with n20 motors. It seems like BMW has aware of the design flaw, and BMW redesigned the problem components, had extended the warranty to 7yrs/70k miles, but never issued a safety recall. . Read more...

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the bolt housing for the cam shaft detached and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. I was have issues with the vehicle hesitating and jerking, and generally not operating as expected. I took it in to be checked as I was concerned for operating it safely. The dealership indicated that it requires a software patch, as their is a code error, but they will only fix it if I pay for the patch. I told them that if it is a patch that seems like a recall - software is not hardware, software does not just stop working if it is good to begin with. If we allow car dealers to make us pay for patches when they mess up software we will all be paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for their coding errors going forward as the technology continues to innovate. I am all for innovation, but I should not be paying for their coding error. My car worked a few months ago, I took it in for service under warranty for a different issue, they did work to the onboard software that likely caused this issue, and now that it is out of warranty they have decided that is my problem to fix what they broke. This is a precedent that I do not think we should allow auto makers to set. A car is not a pc that we replace in 4 years - it cost exponentially more. When microsoft requires us to upgrade or they will not patch anymore it is on a pc that cost $1-2k at max, we are talking about a much larger investment and BMW should not be allowed to just stop fixing their code and charging consumers for errors that are potential safety concerns. I do not care if the code is original or installed at my last service visit. Something is seriously wrong with this picture. I would feel different if I had some custom modification, then I think they could blame me for hacking it, but I did not do so, therefore I should not be penalized.
Vehicle stalled on the highway due to the timing chain guide breaking, I was told it is made of plastic and damaged other parts of the engine that needs to be replaced as well totaling $7,000. After extensive research this issue seems to be recurring on 2013 BMW X3s. Additionally, the reports I have researched online include new vehicles to older Bmws ranging from 30,000 mileage to 100,000 mileage. I purchased the vehicle used at about 57,000 and was never told about this issue. I am awaiting for a call from BMW north America to see if there is anything they can do. I was told there was an extended warranty for these parts when they identified they were faulty but since I had purchased the vehicle used I never received this notice.

The contact owns a 2013 BMW X3. While driving approximately 35 mph, the low oil pressure and drive train malfunction warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle lost power and then stalled. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and had it towed to the bill jacobs BMW dealer (located at 2495 aurora Ave, naperville, IL 60540). The dealer diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the oil, causing it not to have compression. The dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they would pay half of the repair fees. The contact would be responsible for the other half. The approximate failure mileage was 30,300.

Engine power failure on a 2004 BMW 330ci. Repeated failure of engine power without warning (5 times in an intersection). BMW replaced eng. Computer, then installed new software after second incident. Additionally BMW requested that I start using regular gas instead of premium. The issue went away after that.
