I was driving down the road and my vehicle went into limp mode. The malfunction trans light came on. I took it to the dealership for diagnostics and was told I had a oil leak and the air tube needed to be replaced as well as the programming update. The next day BMW service advisor, shawn wilcox called to tell me my timing chain need to be replaced and it would cost over 7000$. I don't know what to do. He gave me his advice or two options I had, I could pay for the cost of repairs and have a vehicle or just fix what was discussed and try to sell my vehicle to someone else. I asked him to help me and put me into another vehicle, he said OH no we can't do that. I asked why, it's your car you sold it to me. Shawn told me BMW knows what is wrong with the car you won't get anything for it, yet he wanted me to sell it to another family and endanger their lives. I wasn't going to hear from him again, very unprofessional. It made me sick. I called and spoke with customer relations a woman by the name of jessica and was told after 4 days of investigation, there's nothing they can do for me. I told them they could have the vehicle, I'm not paying for their manufacture defect. Something needs to be done. BMW is endangering lives by allowing consumers to purchase vehicles with known defects. I would have never purchased my 2013 BMW X3 28i in March 2017 if I had known I would have problems @ 80,000 miles. This is crazy.

Situation when starting a cold engine, a plume of blue smoke can be seen emitting from the exhaust tailpipe for approximately 10-20 seconds. There is no engine malfunction light illuminated (no turbocharger boost faults are stored) and no drivability issues are detected. Cause when the vehicle is parked overnight the engine oil pressure will equalize, this may cause engine oil to leak past the turbocharger exhaust side turbine seal due to carbonization of the turbocharger sealing ring. This is the same issue impacting BMW n20 engines that BMW has issued a technical service bulletin and extended warranty 10 years/ 100,000 miles. The n55 engine (6 cylinder, turbo) has not been included in this extended warranty although defect is the same and may impact emissions.

The oil-feed line for the turbo on the (n20) engine of the 2014 BMW X3 was replaced due to leaking oil into the engine. On cold startup a plume of blue/white smoke is seen emitting from the exhaust tailipie for approximately 30 seconds. This BMW X3 has the standard, common n20 engine. This issue has been addressed by BMW for model years 2012 and 2013, but not 2014. This turbo-oil line failure is a well-known and common defect. BMW has issued "service bulletins" and extended the warranty on the 2012 and 2013 models for this express issue. The service bulletin is attached. BMW has been contacted and are refusing to cover the 2014 model although it is the same engine defect. The repair part includes a redisign of the original part and now includes a check valve. This is a clear example of defect in design. BMW verbage is listed below: the new engine oil feed line part numbers listed above incorporates a check valve on the engine side of the engine oil feed line. The check valve eliminates engine oil pressure equalization and the consequential engine oil leakage past the turbocharger's exhaust side turbine seal. On contact with BMW I could not get a clear answer why the 2014 model was not covered, but I did get BMW to confirm that the engine and the original part are identical to the defect parts in the 2012 and 2013 model. Would NHTSA open an inquiry on the 2014 model n20 turbo oil-line defect please? thanks john awad.

While inspecting for an oil leak under the vehicle, a bolt fell off of the side of the engine. Inspecting the
bolt, it was sheared off. Inspecting the underside of the engine, it was found the bolt came from the passenger side engine mount where the mount bolts to the block. At the same time, it was found a second bolt had also sheared off with a portion of both bolts still in the engine block. The two other bolts of the engine mount were/are still in place. Evidence of corrosion was found around the bolt holes of the missing bolts and around the lower bolt that is still in place. Investigating on the internet revealed other owners reporting similar incidents, including those causing substantial damage when the vehicle was in motion when the failure occurred. . Read more...
