Consumer reported to the fire investigator, tom schaefer, that when trying to start vehicle after sitting all night heard a loud thump, and then all of the lights on the dash went out. Smoke coming from under the hood. A fire started in the engine compartment. Mr. Schaefer said that the consumer used the word thump not bang to describe the initial incident.

Upon start-up attempt - loud clicking noises, all instrument gauges peg , dic resets all counters to zero, dic displays "driver unknown" warning - car starts. This can not be a good thing!.
Intermittently while driving all gauges go haywire. Warning lights are flashing. Also speedometer will read 18-22 mph less than driven. Consumer used onstar, was told problem was a blown module under dash, driver information control. Vehicle was taken to dealer 4 times, finally a wire was replaced with a heavier one. Did not correct the problem. The plastic engine balled up under the vehicle from wind resistance and failure to attach properly. Three of the doors needed adjusting due to poor quality control. The left windshield wiper makes a slap/rap noise. The driver information center (dic) malfunctions which affects all of the dash lights and gauges. Without warning all lights will flash, the tachometer/spedometer erratically bounces up and down, and the temperature and fuel gauge drops to zero. Several attempts were made to repair but with no resolution. As of July 2002 the vehicle has been repaired. *jgthe palstic engine shield balled up under the vehicle.

While traveling instrument panel displayed an off track function, within minutes vehicle lost power, and consumer was locked in for 15-20 minutes. Dealer notified. But, vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop.
