Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 55 mph, the contact noticed the entire instrument panel and gauges failed to operate. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated the instrument panel cluster would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000. Rvk.
The vehicle doors will unlock and lock several times while I’m driving, it will also cause the dashboard, clock-radio and onstar system to flicker off and on. Then it will start to throw error messages on the dashboard about stabilitrak and theft deterrent systems disabled.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the speedometer would intermittently become stuck on one speed and would also display the inaccurate speed traveled. The speedometer would indicate that the contact was driving 30 mph, become stuck and would then immediately increase to 60 mph regardless of the actual speed driven. The contact would have to shut off the engine and restart it in order for the speedometer to reset itself. The dealer stated that the instrument panel cluster gauge was failing and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 51,000 and the current mileage was 53,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that the speedometer would display inaccurate readings and failed intermittently. With the assistance of a navigation system that would read the traveled speed at 55 mph, the vehicle's speedometer would display over 100 mph. In addition, the fuel gauge failed and the oil gauge would display that there was no oil in the vehicle. Most of the gauges and components on the instrument panel became inoperable. The dealer stated that there were too many miles on the vehicle to assist and it would not be covered by the extended warranty. The repair cost was estimated at over $1,000. The failure mileage was 92,000 and current mileage was less than 130,000.

Instrument cluster went out mph kept fluctuating, and a/c and heating has a mind of its own goes on and off and in strength of blowing, all this which I hear is common in 04 to 05 Chevrolet trucks. Even a Chevrolet mechanic told me when fixing my truck said it was pretty common in these years 04- 05 . And he didn't know why it doesn't have a recall.
Chevrolet Avalanche instrument cluster failures. Over the past 32 months the instrument cluster on my 2003 Avalanche has been intermittently malfunctioning causing the speedometer, fuel, temp, oil pressure and all other gauges to not operate. As of 1/19/2008 all of the gauges on the instrument cluster failed completely. From what I understand Chevrolet has issued a extension of the warranty to 70,000 miles for this single issue but this is a safety related problem that should be taken care of under a recall of all vehicles with this instrument cluster.
My 2003 chevy Avalanche has a known defect with the instrument cluster. All gauges on the vehicle can stop functioning without notice. This results in the driver begin unable to see the vehicles speed or any other information about the vehicle including what gear the vehicle is in or even whether the vehicle is in "park". In my case the gauges failed during a snow storm in colorado, which made difficult driving conditions much more dangerous. This is a serious safety issue which could result in both injury and property damage. Apart from the obvious issue of not seeing essential vehicle information, drivers could inadvertently put their vehicle in the wrong gear such as reverse rather than park. Gm acknowledges that this is a know defect with these vehicles but refuses to correct it unless the vehicle has less than 70,000 miles. Gm represents that your office concurs with their approach, which would be a surprise to me since this is not a wear part, is known defect with these vehicles, and presents s serious safety issue. Gm has certainly done a calculation is exclude as many vehicles as possible from their proposed "fix" and is appallingly unconcerned about the safety risks associated with this defect.
2003 chevy Avalanche speedometer fails. Fuel gauge fails. No way to know how fast you are going. Don't know how much fuel is in vehicle. Have to reset system numerous times throughout the year. Dealer quoted $700. 00 plus to fix. Problem started soon after warranty expired. Too many failure instances to recall accurately.
Instrument cluster went bad at 42,000 miles. After reading some of the other complaints about the instrument panel, how do I know if my speedometer is working right.
Speedometer on my 2003 z71 Avalanche works erratically or not at all. A significant safety issue I went to the dealership from who I bought my vehicle. Dealership said there was no recall on speedometer (instrument clusters) for my type of vehicle and that they could not replace the cluster as part of "goodwill" by gm because they have not been instructed to do so. They were not aware of the fact that many Avalanches and other gm suvs have identical problems (usually a bad stepper motor in the instrument cluster). Cost to replace cluster is about $350-$400 including labor. Given the nature of the failure and how widespread it is, I think the NHTSA engineers should investigate this problem and perhaps tell gm they need to recall these vehicles before accidents occur. I have to estimate my speeds on a vehicle with only 58000 miles on it. I have talked with my Chevrolet service department and they said this is becoming very common. Gm should issue a recall to get this fixed.
Instrument cluster went bad at about 50,000 miles speedometer gives false reading.
In light of the recent information concerning gm's intentional withholding of problems with the ignition switch in certain gm vehicles, I feel compelled to share my story. I do see other complaints filed here concerning the same issue. In October 2003, I purchased a new 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. The vehicle had 5,500 demo miles on the odometer. I drove many miles for work and for transporting hockey kids to practice, games, tournaments, etc. In December 2006 I already had 80,000+ miles on the vehicle and the speedometer, gas gauge (causing me to run out of gas in the middle of the night!), oil gauge, battery voltmeter, rpms, which are all components of an electrical cluster began failing. I contacted my gm dealer and was told that a 'silent recall' had been issued to dealers stating that if a vehicle with less than 3 years and under 70,000 miles was brought in, the dealer should fix the item as a warranty repair. Since my vehicle was 2 mos over the 3 yr and over the 70,000 miles, I was denied a warranty repair and quoted $700. 00 to fix the part. Since that date, my son's Chevrolet vehicle had the same problem! and, in 2009 a friend's brand new denali with less than 10,000 miles had the same problem. I have never fixed the problem due to cost and disagreement with gm. I wrote the corporate office and got nowhere. I don't see how a safety issue like this can be allowed to continue to happen nor how gm can know about the problem but not tell owners of the vehicle and/or future possible buyers of the vehicle. Oh wait, yea gm doesn't say anything because consumers might take their business elsewhere! I simply wanted to gm to fix the problem, that was obviously known about, but rather, gm simply keeps putting the same bad component in future vehicles!!.

Speedometer cluster broken on 2005 chevy Avalanche. At 52,000 miles chevy has a known problem with faulty speedometers. Please see below website to get a feel of how many people are having the same problem . . . Read more...
Speedometer cluster fails in many of the gm trucks, requiring a new gauge cluster. .
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel became hot. The components on the steering wheel illuminated and upon further investigation the contact noticed that the wires had melted. The contact also noticed that the radio became very hot and melted the cd inside of the system. The contact also stated that the instrument cluster failed. The manufacturer was notified and stated that they would pay for a new instrument cluster, but not the installation. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 146,000.
