Tailgate Hinge Problems of Chevrolet Avalanche - part 1

2002 Avalanche. Tailgate cable failure. I understand there is a recall for 1999-2000 silverado / GMC pickups for replacing tailgate cables. I have had the cables replaced 1 time in 2004 under warranty, and they have broke again from rust-through 9/2006. Dealer said there is no recall on this, and I must purchase replacements. These are the same manufactured items in the stated recall, why is this vehicle not included? this is or can result in injury. The first time in 2004, I was standing on the tailgate when they broke. Luckily I fell off and was not seriously injured. The report for the trucks from 1999-2000 engineering analysis # is ea05-007. Please look into adding newer vehicles to this, as they potentially have the same issues.

Contact stated power windows were messed up. About one year ago the passenger's side power window stopped working. He took vehiclet to the dealer ,and they changed something on it and fixed the problem. On 8-17-05 the driver's side window stopped working. Also tailgate just dropped open. He said someone worked on it last year and it worked for a while. But currently it was messed up again. It has gotten progressively worse over the past year.

The contact stated the tailgate when lowered has a two edged hook projection on each side that is sharp. On 7-15-05 his granddaughter jumped off the tailgate and scratched her leg along her thigh; a 8-10"long scratch.

While driving 55 mph the tailgate door fell off. The cause has yet to be determined.

Tailgate was down because both of the tailgate support straps snapped. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

The tailgate cable broke while two persons were sitting on it. Consumer had to take the vehicle to the dealer for tailgate to be inspected on a NHTSA recall 04v129000.

While loading a 4 wheeler onto my 2002 chevy Avalanche, both tailgate cables snapped and the tailgate completely fell off. The 4 wheeler, myself, and the ramps that were on the tailgate all fell to the ground. The dealer replaced the tailgate cables, but the damage to the tailgate has not been remedied. I have contacted gm and they are working the issue, but it has not been resolved.

While stepping onto the tailgate it snapped. Dealer stated that the vehicle was recalled under tailgate recall 04v129000. Consumer's hip bone was injured.

Dt:the tailgate latches are not working properly ,and that is what is causing tailgate to fall down and weakening of those cables.

The tailgate cables broke while consumer was standing on top of the tailgate. As a result, driver sustained major injuries, and was transported to ta hospital by car. Consumer contacted the dealer, and was informed that the tailgate cables needed to be replaced.

While letting the tailgate down on my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, the tailgate cable on the left side of the bed disintergrated with no load or undue stress.

While loading a riding lawn, the cable broke in half. Refer to recall campaign. The consumer had the cable replaced at a local dealer with the same type of cable that broke, until the stainless cable arrived, he then called the manufacturer who stated they would not replace it free of charge because the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall, however the consumer received a recall notice in the mail.

While driving tailgate support cables broke. Two weeks later, tailgate detached from the vehicle while driving. Several vehicles hit the tailgate that was in the middle of the road. No crashes or injuries were reported.

When I bought my Chevrolet Avalanche new in 2002, as I left the dealership, I heard a horrible crash and found that the dealer had not latched the rear tail gate. It takes a great amount of effort to close it properly. Since then , on about 10 occasions, the gate has fallen down while driving. Approximately 1 week ago, I found that the left side cable had broken. I was going to call my local dealership today, but , on my way to drop my boys off at school, the gate once again fell down. I stopped and asked my 13 y. O. To slam the gate. When he tried to do this, the gate bounced back into his face and jammed. When I got out and looked, I saw that the right side hinge was dislocated, the right bottom of the gate was damaged, the left rear taillight was broken, there was a gouge on the left edge of the gate, and a minor paint scratch on the gate near the gouge. I remember hearing about this problem during the last couple of weeks and did a search & found this site. I am hoping the dealer or manufacturer will stand behind this defect and pay for my repairs. Tailgate strap on my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche has broken. Dealer is refusing to fix saying my vehicle is not in recall. Was built in September 2001.

Vehicle was parked in front of the driveway, driver pulled down the tailgate, and cable snapped in half. Consumer was able to lift the cable up and put it inside of the trunk area. Both cables were still attached to the body of the truck. Consumer notified dealer about the problem.

Tailgate straps are wearing out prematurely.

I have a 2002 chevy Avalanche. The driver side cable that supports the tailgate snapped while I was standing on the tailgate. Luckily the passenger side cable held or else I would have hit the ground pretty hard, not to mention damage to my tailgate. The cable appears to be completely corroded.

One of my tailgate cables broke abruptly while I was climbing onto one corner of the tailgate. The corner dropped enough that I was dropped back to the ground. (I weigh about 185 lbs). I then inspected the other cable and saw no evidence of a problem, but when I leaned on that corner of the tailgate, the second cable also broke. I called my dealer, but since I was out of warranty on mileage, I was told that it would not be covered and that there were no service bulletins. I then opened a file with gm field service, and have not heard any response.

Tailgate cable snapped on a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche while loading atv. Cables snapped in the middle of the cable and not at ends. I was assured by sales representative that the tailgate can handle the weight of an atv. The the truck bed has an atv tread embedded into the mat to add traction while loading and unloading. I believe the cables need to be recalled and corrected before someone else is injured. I was quoted an estimate of $123. 00 to fix. I want the manufacturer to pay for the damage since it resulted in a manufacturing defect.

The tailgate cables on my 2002 chevy Avalanche unexpededly broke while a friend and I were unloading a home gym. Both cables snapped in the middle at the same time. This resulted in the tailgate dropping and my friend and I almost falling with the home gym on top of us. I slightly strained my back but we had no significant injury. Luckily we have good balance.

Both my tailgate cables snapped at the same time on my 2002 chevy Avalanche on a boy scout camp out. Two of the fathers (about 400 lbs) were sitting on the tailgate when they both snapped. Lucky that they landed on their feet and did not get hurt. Both look like they are black and corroded from the inside. Snapped at the same place on both cables.

Cables that hold up the tailgate on thr 1/2 ton chevy Avalanche rusted and broke while I was leaning on the tailgate. I fell to the ground and was not injured. My sister-in-law also had a cable on her 2002 1/2 ton Chevrolet pickup broke.

In Feb of 2004 I submitted a complaint (#10058789). It was about my tailgate that fell completely off with me on it. There is damage to the tailgate still and I talked to a dealership about it one year ago. They were supposed to get back to me and then I let it fall by the waistside. I need help pushing them to repaint my tailgate, and replace some plastic molding. How do I do this? they don't seem to think it is their issue. The tailgate is damaged due to the defective cables that they had a recall on.

Tailgate cables failed while I was unloading back of Avalanche. I fell to the ground, along with computer equipment I was carrying. Both tailgate cables broke and tailgate fell off truck. Damage to tailgate paint, molding and latch assembly. Dealer quoted approximately $900 worth of damage.

Consumer stated that while driving and without warning tailgate cable snapped, causing a distraction to the consumer. Dealer notified.

Three families and there kids went to a lake in arkansas. One day we decided to go down to the lake on a gravel road. Four teenage kids decided to ride on the tailgate. Together they all weighed under 600 pounds. While driving down the gravel road @ about 5 mph a heard a pop then voices then a thud and I looked in my rear view mirror and noticed the kids on the ground. When I stopped to get out, I also noticed my tailgate had fallen off completely. I went to the dealer and they refused to fix my tailgate, but replaced my cables and my tailgate handle which had been damaged. I tried gm, but they told me that the dealer was there eyes and ears. The dealer felt like the tail gate was overloaded and that had caused the failure. The dealer had told me that these type of cables had broke all of the time. A year went by and gm had issued a recall on all of the these type cables. I went back to the dealer to see if they would fix the scratches on the tailgate and they said no. I went back to gm and they told me that the dealer was their eyes and ears and they would not fix my tailgate. I believe if the cables fail and you have any load on the tailgate it is likely that the tailgate can come off. The tailgate has no pin to secure it. If the cables break and the tailgate is at the right angle it will come off. If a tailgate comes off the truck on the highway I see this being a very dangerous scenario. I feel the dealer is neglecting their responsibility to stand behind the product. Also this all happened under warranty when the truck had 30,000 miles.
