Engine keeps overheating. Two blown head gaskets in the past 6 months. Hoses burst with no warning or prior damage, causing car to overheat. Engine is building pressure for some unknown reason. Mechanic is unable to determine the root of the overheating. Replaced thermostat, water pump, multiple hoses, two head gaskets and it is still overheating and running hot.

Timing belt breaks too often. The car has now had the timing belt replace 3 times since I have owned it I bought it at 69,000 miles I was replaced at around 74k then broke and left me stranded on the side of the road at night time after hours at 121k then has broke again at 134k this is supposed to be a 60k part and is not lasting like it should and when it breaks causes other stuff around it to be affected as well. The first time I had to replace water pump, the 2nd time water pump as well as engine gaskets and it cost me $2600 to fix. This last time just the water pump and a water hose. This last time it left my daughter stranded on the side of the road after dark on her way home from college luckily her boyfriend was able to come pick her up. This car is notorious for the timing belt issue. All three times this has been repaired by 3 different shops and all three say that this car has major issues due to the timing belts not being sturdy. Chevy should be replacing these cars or refunding the cost of having these repaired you can't even resell to people due to this issue. Also I never even got a letter regarding the head lamp recall. I am just wondering if chevy is waiting till people blow up in their cars.

I just bought this 2005 chevy Aveo 2 wks ago when the alternator went out of my car and I was having surgery the next day then would need a car for work 2 days later, so I had no time to properly look for a car. I just came off the exit of a 4 lane highway 1. 5hrs away from home. As I was slowing to stop there was a bunch of white smoke (turned out to be steam) billowing out from under the hood and the car engine stopped running. A man helped push the car off the road and they looked under the hood and discovered the thermostat housing split apart. It's plastic! the housing was clearly defective since it was sheared in half as if cut with large knife. How stupid! he gave my husband a ride to the nearest napa auto parts where the ordered from another dealer. We had to wait 1. 5hr and the owner helped replace it. The new one was metal! put antifreeze in and tried to start the car several times and it won't start. Had to have the car towed. I got on the computer for help diagnosing the problem and discover a million complaints on edmunds. Com, automotive forums, etc. That gm has known about this and other problems with this car for years such as plastic pully, timing belt breaks that completely kills the engine. That's where I found this site. This car is a lemon and should be recalled!!! heck on this site there are complaints from 2011 and still no recalls! from what I learned reading all the complaints just about everything in this car is junk. I am not going to put another penny into this car. It's at the mileage range to replace the timing belt, the plastic pully, and the water pump, not to mention the electrical stuff. It would've been cheaper to rent a car for the 2wks. Struts busted. I'm gonna take the loss and never buy chevy again! please help us owners get chevy to make this right. They and you have known the many problems a long time! please do the right thing!.

This is the same vehicle as NHTSA incident 10393028 (snapped plastic thermostat housing unit). Driving on a multiple lane freeway at ~65mph and the timing belt snapped (high pitched whistle like the car window was slightly open). Immediately lost all speed control and began rapidly decelerating. Thankfully, was in right hand lane and was able to coast off the next available exit. Likely would have been killed had I been in any other lane in morning traffic and lost control of vehicle. Once stopped, car could not be turned back on and would not move until turned into acc mode where it finally allowed me to shift into neutral. Had to be towed, eventually to the dealership. Engine damage was catastrophic and required extensive and expensive repairs (3 weeks and approximately $2,700). Snapped timing belt also bent pistons and valves and required the water pump to be replaced. This is clearly a known issue that should be dealt with by Chevrolet, rather than hiding behind the 60,000 mile replacement, which is laughably low for a timing belt. Further - my timing belt was supposed to have been replaced at 50,000 miles and thus not only did a Chevrolet dealership lie to me, they put my life at risk by knowing this was an issue that would inevitably occur long before the next scheduled belt replacement. This car has been meticulously maintained with oil changes every 3,000 miles and only 5,000-10,000 miles driven/year. There was no reason for the timing belt to snap other than being a faulty part that should have been recalled.
I drive a 2005 chevy Aveo, yesterday 10-22-08, while I was driving on the freeway, my engine temp shot up to max. Luckily I was just coming up on my exit so I got to the bottom of the offramp and pulled off to the side. Smoke was pouring out the hood of my car. It turns out the plastic housing thermostat housing cracked in half and all the coolant in my car poured out. While I was sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck my engine continued to get overheated. I replaced my water pump housing myself chevy has an updated thermostat housing made of metal now, but now I have large amounts of air blowing through my coolant reservoir. My head gasket is blown and possibly the head is warped. I was looking on line for info and it turns out this is a very common problem for many people. Now because chevy didn't recall a known problem there are hundreds of people out there having to pay $1,000+ to have major engine work performed. Not to mention all those people stuck on the side of the road waiting for tow trucks. I don't know if this qualifies as something your association deals with but I just think someone should be notified and something should be done. Thank you for your time.
