Windshield Wiper/washer problems of the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer - part 1

Gm has a safety recall on my 1996 Blazer that they will not honor for me. They have indicated the recall was a long time ago and my car is 10 years old. I had the exact problem for the last 5-6 years or more, but never received a notice, and never got it fixed. I was aware of the problem and took measures and limited my driving when it might be a problem. I felt comfortable with the problem as low risk when I drive. Now I am selling the car as is. I feel there could be a safety hazard if someone else is driving that is not as aware and cautious as I am. The recall is the windshield washer motor is intermittent. Sometimes the wipers won't work. This has been scary in a down pour and when a passing car splashed a muddy wave on the windshield while I was driving in traffic. I have been using rain-x or driving my wifes car when it is raining. I have had the car in to the dealer a couple of times after the recall and even had them look at it once. They never notified me of the recall. This is a gm recognized safety issue that they should correct (at least once) regardless how old my car is. A the original owner, I should have the right to one free repair, and can cash it in anytime. Please let me know if you can help me. Otherwise will notify whoever I sell the car to, and hope they don't have an accident.

: the contact stated the windshield wipers did not work. The windshield wipers worked intermittently prior to the incident. There was a NHTSA recall, # 03v159000, regarding the visibility: windshield wiper/washer. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.

I have cut and pasted the email I received from general motors in regards to my inquiry about intermittent wipers on our 1996 s-10 Blazer. As I emailed back to general motors, our vehicle has over 70,000 miles (exclusion of special policy 02054); however, I a few concerns: 1) general motors replaced a defective part with another defective part. 2) general motors is using the age/mileage of a vehicle to avoid replacing a defective item that is a major safety issue - causing reduced visibility. I would appreciate your clarification on this issue. Your Blazer was included in the recall for the windshield wipers that was issued in 1998. This repair was completed on your vehicle in December of 1998. Now it appears that your Blazer may be included in special policy #02054, which covers wiper failure due to a cracked circuit board: some customers of 1996-1997 Chevrolet Blazer, s10 pickup vehicles not involved in recall 98043 may experience a windshield wiper failure due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. This special policy covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (112,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership, or for those vehicles currently outside of this coverage, until February 29, 2004. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. We have created a computer file, 1-172249532, to notate your concerns.

My windshield wipers on my 1996 chevy Blazer failed intermittently. Some days, they will not start up, other days they stop while I am driving and other days they work fine. I contacted gm but they told me that there was a recall, but my vehicle already had the replacement part installed. I felt that this is a major safety problem that could lead to accidents or fatalities.

After having problems with the windshield wipers since the purchase of our 1996 Blazer in 8/2002, they completely quit working during a rainstorm while traveling on Friday Feb 16. There is a recall for a similar problem with Blazers but after calling a local dealer I was told it did not apply to our veicle. The windshield wipers now instead of working intermitantly do not work at all and make a buzzing noise.

While driving, windshield wipers failed and consumer could not see, there was a recall 98v150001, however dealer stated that VIN on this vehicle was just outside of recall.

While driving on the highway at 65mph during rain, the wipers began to fail. The fisrt time it happened they paused slightly then began to operate after a short moment. The second time while driving on the highway at 60mph they paused then started again and then they stopped all together. I pulled over on the road and after awhile they started again but only in the fastest mode. I then began to return home when the wiper failed completely. I was on the highway during a steady rain. I was nearly involved in an accident trying to pull over to the side. I waited for about 20 mins and then they started again. I had to repeat this once more before reaching my home. I immediately took the truck for repairs. The dealer replaiced the circuit board and cover. The same item was recalled in 1998. Your recal id# (98vi50001). I paid $132. 00 for repairs. I was told that this recall did not cover my vehicle because it was manufactured 8/96. The recall only covered vehicles from 8/94 to 5/96. Please add this complaint to your files. I feel that I should not have been billed for a defect that was recalled only 3 months prior to my trucks production. The identical defect was found and the condition could have cost me and my family our lives. Something as important as wiper failure should not be taken lightly. The recall should be extended before lives are taken. I have contacted Chevrolet and GMC and was told that my vehicle is not covered. Anything you can do would be appreciated. Thankyou.

Failure of windshield wipers during rain, found other 1996 s-10 Blazers under recall 98v150000 had problem corrected free of charge. Told my vehicle not one of these, noticed numerous complaints on your data base of other owners 1996 Blazers same failure. This failure only occurs during rain which causes safety problem. Did not know problem existed until failure of my wipers and see no reason why other owners 0f 1996 Blazers are covered and this vehicle isnt, since it is the same year and same problem as owners of recall notice 98v150000 and failure causes vehicle to be unable to be driven during rain or wipers go out in middle of driving which occurred on sept 1, 2000 almost causing accident.

Windshield wipers will randemly stop operating, recently the problem has become worse, same porblem seen in campaign 98v150001.

I was driving down the intersate with my 8 month old baby during a rain storm and the wipers just quit, then started back and quit again. There wasn't a convenient place to pull over, and it ended up raining all day, I couldn't just sit there and wait for the rain to stop. This is happening everytime it rains, and I have tried to get information on a recall but everyone tells me that my vehicle is not included in the recall, well, it should be!!.

The wiper on this truck stop working at various times when the truck is being driven. This presents a safety hazard since you can not see the road when they do stop. They do return to working condition but it may be 2 minutes later ao an hour later. I had a 1995 s10 pickup truck with the same problem and that was recalled and the defective module replaced. It appears that gm has the same problem with this vehicle but no recall has been issued. Seems to me that gm should be recalling this one also as it is clear they had a defective board in all these cars.

This is the third time I have sent mail about this problem. I would just like aknowledgment that it was received. No safety defect mentione din summary.

Windshield wipers work intermittently.

Beginning in November of 1999, the windshield wipers didn't always work. At first, I thought it was just a fluke. After the initial failure, they worked fine for some time. We had the vehicle in for another problem, and service man told us there had been no problems with the wipers. Since that time, it has become more frequent. It intermittenly works. Somedays, it works every time, somedays some of the time, and other days, none of the time. Yesterday, in the rain, driving all over nashville, TN, it would not work at all, no matter how many times I tried it. Today, when I got in the car, I tried it just for the heck of it, and they worked. My husband knows several people who have 95 and 96 model s-10 Blazers, who have had theirs replaced free of charge, it was called a campain. When we have asked, we have been told there are no recalls for our vehicle. I found a recall no. 98v150, and sounds an awful lot like our problem. Please advise.

Winsheild wipers work intermittently , ceases to operate for long periods at a time. Very dangerous when it rains.

Sometimes when trying to turn on windshield wipers they'll come on, and sometimes they won't.

Windshield wipers failed, reported to manufacturer but said that even though a recall was underway, my VIN number was not one of those recalled.

I tried to get my extended warranty to fix the issue, but refused to cover it. I told them that it was a safety issue, they disagreed. I did not know that the NHTSA existed, other wise you would of heard from me a long time ago. I read an article in the paper which stated problems with recalls and the vehicles involved and thats when I saw that my car wasn't the only Chevrolet vehicle with the same problem. I called the dealership to see if it had anymore recalls to it and they told me no. My Blazer has had prior recall for a harnest of some sort!!!! this is a big safety issue to me. Everytime it rains I have to pull over to ensure the safety of my family. Wipers don't seem to work at all now, and neither does the waterpump that squirts the water to clean the windshild. This happend after approx. 90 days after I purchased the vehicle.

While driving the truck in a heavy down pour the windshield wipers stopped working intermittently, then quit working altogether. The dealer has been contacted about the problem. The problem has not been corrected.

Intermittently the defective windshield wipers stop working while in use which won't help the occupant in the rain.

Driving during wet conidtions windshield wipers will fail/become inoperative, causing consumer to play with control to try to restart the wipers. This is an intermittent problem. Dealer cannot duplicate problem.
