39 problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Transmission is bucking, shifting hard thru gears while driving. Service light dosn't want to go out.
Automatic transmission not shifting from reverse to first gear. Causing the engine to race but moving as though it is in second or third gear to start from a dead stop. Once moving at second gear speed it is working fine. Service engine light is on. When scanned it shows codes p0740 and p1860 (p0740 is tcc sensor malfunction ---p1860 is shift plate d grounded to battery)when codes are cleared the codes come back. Transmission fluid and filter have been replaced .
After running the vehicle on the highway for a short amount of time, the vehicle shifts hard from first gear to second. Had to rebuild the transmision. Several other vehicles, same make and model, and even year, were in the shop for the same problem.
This truck was always serviced at the dealer where it was purchased. Any scheduled maintenance was done including the transmission. On the 60,000 service the service manager suggested a flush type of transmission service & I said to proceed. The very next day the vehicle was picked up & immediately showed symptoms of shifting at different speeds than it had before the service. After some calls to the service department the vehicle was brought back so they could diagnose the problem. No definitive answer could be given but the service manager stated, they, the dealership, would accept no responsibility for the problem. I guess they never heard of cause & effect. Needless to say I removed the vehicle from their possession immediately. A third party repair facility had determined the transmission had self destructed to the point of major damage. Subsequently I spoke with other shops only to find the method of flushing was a bad idea most likely did cause the failure. So much for an authorized dealer & manufacturer standing behind their work. This cost me to the tune of $2,000.
Contamination in transmission fluid. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.
Transmission tube and dip stick were rusted and sediment was in the transmission fluid. Transmission jerks switching from first to second gear. Noticeable slipping between shifting while driving 45-55 mph.
While slowing down from high speeds vehicle will start to accelerate. Also, vehicle will shutdown at times too. Contacted dealer, and dealer has replaced several parts of vehicle, including transmission; but, nothing has worked yet.
Vehicle will not shift into reverse. Unable to shift into higher gears. Had contacted a dealership.
Transmission tube and dip stick were rusted and fine sediment was in the transmission fluid. This part should be improved by general motors and a recall initated on their part the repair cost of each failure is 750. 00 to 800. 00. I have noticed multiple complaints about Blazer and other Chevrolet/GMC transmissions.
We are about to put a fourth transmission into this vehicle. It has been very frustrating having this car.

Rusted dipstick filler tube damaged transmission.
Transmission clutch wear /dipstick tube rust abrasives.
Transmission tube and dip stick were rusted and fine sediment was in the transmission fluid. Massey flushed the system 07/23/1999 @23780 miles. I have noticed multiple complaints about Blazer and other Chevrolet/GMC transmission. My brother had his 1997 GMC van transmission redone but it was just inside warranty. At 40820 and 2 months outside of 3 year warrantly there should be a warning that the car would self destruct at 3 year or 36,000!.

The transmission needs rebuilt and the dealership wants $2,000. I have read on the internet of numerous people having the same problem of the vehicle shifting hard from 1st to 2nd gear. There needs to be a recall. There are to many vehicles of general motors having this problem.

Transmission started to jerk when going from 1st to 2nd gear. Tried to check the transmisison fluid but the dip stick could not be taken out because it was entirley rusted. The whole dip stick and holder is rusted. There was a TSB put out by gm but they will not pay to have this fixed. They stated they found something else wrong with the transmission that the extended warranty will have to cover. My suspisions are that the rust caused the problems. Dealer stated that I would have to pay for the dip stick ad dip stick holder. Still waiting on the extended warranty people to see if they will cover fixing the transmission. Should not have to pay anything due to a faulty transmission dip stick holder that rusts!.
After vehicle runs for 30 minutes, transmission jerks when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I was told that the valve body needed replacement, and the valve was sticking. It will cost $1000. GMC customer service department said there is nothing they can do to help me. It is apparent that the 97 Blazer's had serious problems with both the brakes and the transmission but don't want to do anything about it. All they want to do is replace my valve body with a newer updated version now that the bugs have been worked out but at my cost. There is no reason that a transmission on any car should have problems at this mileage. To top it off, most of my mileage is highway. I also put my 4th set of brakes on at 41,000 miles. Dealer said 1st set were defective at 18k, 2nd set was only a 10k brake at 29k. Problem was never fixed and I gave up.
Transmission has no reverse, and also it bangs at start up and it has high rpms when shifting.
Transmission does not have reverse, and transmission bangs during acceleration.
Rust developed on the dip stick. Also, windshield wipers operated intermittently, caused by the wiper pulse circuit board. Dealer /manufacturer notified.
While driving, transmission clunked and failed.
Transmission dip stick rusted - filling tube needed to be flushed and dip stick replaced. I was told that the o-ring gasket on these dip sticks are defective.
Failed first at 38,280 repaired under extended warranty. Dealer not involved in 1st or 2nd failure/repair. Chevrolet says that 76k on repaired transmission is reasonable -- I disagree.
Would like current recall list for this year Blazer to take to local dealer to fix. No safety defect listed.
While driving transmission overheated causing vehicle to slip and leak oil. Transmission showed no signs of problems prior to this incident. The dealer has been notified.
Transmission does not shift to 3rd or overdrive. Dipstick is full of particles. Dealer rebuilding.
Transmission dipstick has rusted, reverse is gone, starting to slip in drive gears.

Engine check light has been coming on frequently. Dealership replaced the switch, they said that it is nothing to worry about. On long trips (about an hour) the light comes back on, and now the transmission starts to shift very rough.
Shop determined an intermittent internal problem with transmission causing 2nd and 3rd gears to remain in neutral while engine revs in 1st before reaching the shift speed into 4th. Plrblem first appeared at 12000 miles and was reported to dealer who determined "there was no problem. " situation continued to get worse over time until temp in engine began to run high causing alarm. Owner had vehicle inspected by an independent transmission specialist to have problem detected. Now with approximately 32000 miles on the vehicle, the transmission is shot.
