1 Brake Disc problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 02/11/2002

I and many other other new Camaro owners have been having problems with brake pulsation, general motors has a TSB out on the pulsation problem but fails to do a recall. It's very dangerous I feel for myself and other Camaro owners. I don't want to have to keep bringing my car in for service if the brake components are unreliable for these f body cars.

2 Brake Disc problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 05/05/2001

While in normal driving conditions, if not better than average conditions including long trips, every 3000 miles or so, the front rotors warp from the heat generated over short periods of time with full amounts of brake pad. Many mechanics and service managers admitt to this problem. The problem is described to me as due to the rotors being too thin and the pads having too much metal makeup. An "engineering problem" as it was unofficially refered to. The rotors are not thick enough, and/or not enough air to cool the components. Recomendations from both independent ase mechanics as well as gm dealership employees (unofficially) was to purchase either slotted "racing" rotors or try ceramic non-metal pads from other sources. This has apparently gone on since 1998 on both firebirds and Camaros.

3 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 03/24/2000

Noticed pulsation and squeaking brakes. Brought vehicle in and dealer said that rotors needed to be turned. Not under warantee since 20,000 miles, but also replaced all pads due to service bulletin on pads. Rotors appear defective design and band aid repair of softer pads to mask problem. Could end up being major problem if not corrected properly. How can we all get chevy to own up and replace a faulty brake system design? by the listing in your complaint database, it is obvious that this is a very wide spread problem.

4 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 11/04/1999

There has been a slight shimmy in the front end when applying the brakes at highway speeds since the car was new. The shimmy progressivly got worse and worse. I brought the car to the dealer to have it looked at. He says the rotors are warped and need to be resurfaced. He said that it is not a warrantee repair and I will have to pay for it. I argued that the car has always had the shimmy but I didn't supect a problem, this being my first car with abs brakes. The car only has 18,577 miles, the brake rotors should not be warped. My arguing with the dealer has not gotten anywhere, since the car is no longer safe to be driven in its current condition, I agreed to pay for the repair. Now, after doing some looking around on the internet I have found out that many Camaro owners have the same exact problem. Though some dealers have been repairing the rotors under warantee, but most don't. And I've also found out that resurfacing the rotors(which I am paying for!), and even replacing the rotors with oem parts does not solve the problem. There is a design flaw and the problem will continue to recur if gm replacement parts are used. In this day, a $20k-$30k new car should not have defective rotors that the owners are forced to continually get repaired. A cars braking system is its number one safety component, how can the consumer be subjected to this?.

5 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 10/05/1999

Brake rotors warped at 10,000 miles, dealer claimed only warrantied for 7500. Car in for brake problems 3 times, and they refused to replace the rotors. Contacted Chevrolet, and they instructed dealer to replace rotors at no charge. Dealer was very difficult to deal with, did not want to replace until I took the issue to a higher level. Dealer claimed no knowledge of rotor problems with this car. I referred him to this website, and gave him a print out of the complaints on the 98 Camaro. There is a lot of data available on the internet with regards to this problem.

6 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

8 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

Camaro was brand new off the lot 6-99. At 28000 miles I began to notice while traveling at speeds of 55-70 mph. And applied the brakes the front end of the Camaro began to shake. The car now has more than 33000 miles and the shake is much worse. I went to tom bannen Chevrolet to talk with the service mgr. And the new car sales manager. They both told me the front rotors were worn out and needed to be replaced with the total cost being my responsability. I have been driving for more than thirty five years and never had to replace rotors. I'am a retired truck driver. Should I ever find myself on icy slick roads and have to apply the brakes at the speeds mentioned, I will certainly go into a spin. I feel the the manufacture should be responsible for replacing the pre wearing rotors escpecially considering the intial price charged to me for the new Camaro. I have spoke with other new car owners and many are expeiancing similar problems. Brakes are nothing to be experimenting cheaper and thinner parts just to save that mighty dollar. We are talking about quality, saftey, fair consumer trust that all parts are of the best quality when it comes to the braking system. Thank you for your patience in reading this complaint.

9 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 04/23/1999

When traveling at about 50 and putting on brakes steering wheel shakes badly.

10 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 04/08/1999

Warped rotors - twice. Dealers/gm won't replace defective materials because "they don't have to". It's a safety hazard that gm doesn't care at all about. It seems to me that the metal for the rotors on these cars wasn't properly hardened. These cars were assembled just prior to the big gm strike. Please investigate this. With all the other complaints of this problem with these cars with the NHTSA, one would think there'd be a recall or TSB released on these by now. Is NHTSA doing anything about this? btw - I also plan to contact my state's attorney general about this.

11 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 03/20/1999

Front end vibration when applying brakes. Dealership turned rotors and replaced pads, however problem is now back.

12 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 02/10/1999

I first noticed that I was having a problem with my brakes when I would apply the brakes to either slow down or to stop. The steering wheel would have a slight shimmy to it. I took it and had a mechanic that I know and trust take a look at it and he had to "machine" the right front rotor. I didn't write down the mileage at the time because I didn't think it was that improtant. I took it to the dealership on 3/3/99 and asked them to take a look at the brakes because I could hear a scraping noise coming from the right front brake when I would apply the brakes. The shop looked at the brakes and said that they were fine. I took the shop foreman for a ride with me so that he was clear on what I was hearing and he told me that they were suppose to sound like that. I have not been back to that dealership since. I have a terrible shimmy in the steering when I apply the brakes and the noise is terrible. I have had the rotors replaced and it has already wore out this rotor. I don't know where else to turn to to get some kind of help on this. I have the original rotors that came off of the car. I also have all of my repair receipts.

13 Brake Disc problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 10/28/1998

When driving at 55 mph the vehicle vibrates, and the engine check light keeps coming on. Consumer had the brake disc fixed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the two valves are not running/vehicle has low to no compression.

14 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 10/15/1998

Both front brake rotors warped and caused a vibration when brakes were applied, especially at freeway speeds. Both front rotors were replaced under warranty, but the new rotors have just begun to demonstrate signs of warpage again (11000 miles).

15 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 09/15/1998

I have talked to a number of Camaro owners who all are having the same problem the the disc brake rotors.

16 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 09/01/1998

Need a recall on 98+ front rotors. Inferior products have caused hundreds of people to experience warping and steeering wheel vibration. This is unsafe, and unnecessary!!.

17 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 08/05/1998

18 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 08/03/1998

Rotors for disc brakes are warped or get warped when car is new w/lt1000 miles.

19 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 04/09/1998

The front brake rotors have warpped six (6) times on this car causing steering wheel shaking and posssible loss of control. Including the original rotors, there has been four (4) new sets of rotors on this car and those rotors have been resurfaced three ( 3) times. I have been to two different Chevrolet dealers to have this work done and have contacted general motors direct and they can not figure out why the brakes are defective. I have heard of many Camaro and firebird owners with this same rotor warpping problem. I first filed a complant with NHTSA on 5/29/99 and the rotors have been replaced two more times since that submittal.

20 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Failure Date: 01/15/1998

The front rotors are warping prematurely. I had a '95 z28 which I drove much harder and never had a problem(55,000). The 1998 however, has failed three times in 25,000 miles.

21 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Camaro

Since I bought the car new, it has gone through 4 sets of rear disc pads. The pads have uneven wear from top to bottom which make the car have a "not smooth" stopping feel. The most recent incident on 6/2002 was the rear brakes making a loud squeeling noise when stopping at a traffic light. The rear wheels are more dirty than the front wheels. Normally, the fronts would be more dirty than the rears. This leads me to believe the rear brakes are "hanging up" on the rotor (not releasing). The dealer insists there is nothing wrong with the rear brakes.

22 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Front brakes on both sides make the steering wheel shake really bad usually during wet weather, but it does it all the time, the problem existed at the time of purchase, however has not been corrected.

23 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

No summary.

24 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

When the brakes are applied at highway speeds vehicle shakes uncontrollably. The dealer has been notified.

25 Brake Disc problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro

Rotors warped at 9876 miles and vandergriff Chevrolet turned them. They warped again at 22593 and the same dealer would not fix them because they say it is out of warranty.
