In rainy conditions, my Cavalier does not seem to stop well and the abs is overactive. Puddles, wet roads, rain, and snow seem to have adverse effects on my stopping abilities. In two different rain storms I have almost hit a possum, a cop, a tree limb, other cars, and missed an intersection; non of which had anything to do with speeding. The lack of stopping ability is dangerous to me and others driving around me. My car is scheduled for a diagnostics check to find out what can be done about this problem. I do not feel safe driving my car anymore.

I heard of a recent recall concerning the abs braking system on gm vehicles. It sounds like what has happened to my sonã‚s 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier. When coming to a stop at below 10 miles per hour, for no reason the abs system kicked in making it very difficult to stop safely. I had to pull the fuse and by-pass the system to make the car safe to drive again.

Caller says rear driver side wheel locks up under 30 mph. When caller hits brake he can feel it grab. When he tries to take off he can feel it hold longer than it should be holding. Vehicle has been to 2 different dealers, and they said it was normal. Manufacturer said they could not find anything on it in their search ,and offered the caller a free oil change.

Consumer states there is a malfunction with the abs system. At any speed, when brakes are applied, abs kicks on and does not catch, but starts to jolt. Brake pedal seems to catch/release over and over, which caused extended stopping distances. Also causes rolling foward or backward in any weather condition or under any driving circumstances. Consumer has barely had an accident up to this point. Vehicle has rolled into traffic several times and consumer was forced to use the emergency brake to avoid an accident.

When attempting to brake vehicle continued to roll intermittently, resulting in extended stopping distance .
I have already reported a complaint to general motors and have a file #. I warned them and experienced myself that the abs were dangerous and I was exposed to near accidents because of the brakes freezing and skidding when hitting a bump or patch of ice. The brakes skid and do not stop. This complaint was put in over six months ago. Now my daughter was in an accident. She was telling me about the brakes skidding and not stopping.

I had had problems with my car not stopping when I would brake in the past. I took my car into the dealership and they said it was because I needed to replace my brakepads & rotors. I paid to have them replace and less then 2000 miles later my mom had an accident. It was a clear, dry, moderately traveled road. A woman cut of kip the man in front of my mom. He braked, my mom saw what happened and had plenty of time to brake ,and was only driving approximately 20-25 miles per hour. She stepped on the brake but the car didnt slow, so she stepped harder causing the pedal to go to the floor of the car. When that happened the abs system made its normal noise to indicate it was engaged but the car still didnt stop. Kips truck and tow ball stopped my car. The air bags didnt deploy and there was no damage to kips truck. My mom is a very experienced driver. She has driven professionally for a reputable courier service, and for the san antonio via (bus) system. I know there was nothing more she could have done to prevent the accident. I took it to chuck olsen the dealership who sold me the car, to check the abs system. They kept my car from Friday the 21th of June 2002 to Friday the 28th of June 2002. They didnt do any extensive testing, very basic visual checks, which is what they wrote on the evaluation. I didnt agree with the initial inspection, so I asked timiki j at gm who handled my product failure allegation, if I could get a second opinion. She said it was fine but they wouldnt pay for it. So I paid about $125 to get a second opinion. It took the next dealership about an hour and a half to do a complete inspection; they determined that there was presently nothing wrong with the breaking system. In the inspection notes they did note that that doesnt mean something didnt happen. Just that the abs computer hadnt recorded a failure. I called timiki 3 times after the second inspection and left three messages asking her to call me back. To this day, I still haven.

When slowing down and making a right turn. The brakes lock up, causing the car to go into a skid. It's ecspecially worse on wet roads. Now it's starting to lock up going straight and go into a skid coming to complete stops. The car is very unsafe. I've decided after almost having a near car wreck, to take it in next week. The last known report was on July 8, 2002, when I was driving I had to slow down the car locked up again and it started bouncing up and down. I came to a complete stop before the car re-ended another car. Please help me with anymore information about this and other braking problems.
2001 Cavalier struck a 1997 Dodge van broadside traveling through a highway intersection I slammed on brakes to no avail when van turned left in front of me.

When I depress my brakes after the car has sat awhile, they lock up slamming the car to a stop. When it gets icy out my tires will lock up and I will go into a skid.
3 minors injured. Car totaled. Brakes applied, but car would not stop and hit embankment.
Two times in the last year, the anti-lock brakes on our 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier have malfunctioned and caused us to rearend other vehicles. Both times after slamming down on the brakes, the car would almost come to a complete stop and then would jut forward 2-3 times and hit the car in front of us. After the first accident, we took the car to a mechanic, and he told us he could not find anything wrong with the anti-lock brakes. We thought that possibly it was just a one time occurrence and maybe there would not be continuing problems with the brakes, but then in the latest accident, our car behaved in the same manner. This time we sustained severe damage and the car was totaled. Luckily, no one was injured in either accident, probably because both times the accidents occured at very low speeds. We would like to know if other owners of 1996 Chevrolet Cavaliers have had similar problems with their anti-lock brakes. Thank you.

Brakes did not stop properly when pulling out of parking lot, broad sided another vechicle, Cavalier did not stop when brakes were engaged at low speed, gm was contacted and even though the dealership found warpage on the rotors they disregard responsibility stating warped rotors cannot interfer with proper operation of the brakes, they turned rotors and returned vechicle, please investigate have read multiple claims on your site of similiar complaints on this vechicle.
I keep taking my car back to the dealer for the same problems with my windshield fogging up, especially when it rains and the defogger does not help; I still have problems with a squeling noise in my tires, and my steering column, steering column makes a high pitched sound when in reverse; my drivers window has locked up on me twice; when I first took the car to be checked for my tires they said the manufacture did not install the nuts and bolts correctly and the same with my steering column and they said they were fix but they are not!!!!! ; I am getting sick and tired of having to take my car back to the dealer, it seems to be every 3-4 weeks now; the last time I took the car the kept it all day and said they could not find out what was wrong. Please warn people about these cars I know I am not the only one with these problems; every time I go to the dealership there are at least 2 other people with almost the same problems or has already had the problem I have.
When applying brakes consumer smelled brakes burning. Also, stuttered when applying brakes. Pedal went to floor. Took to dealer to dealer 5-6 times, could not remedy problem. Debris in drums, dealer said.
When stopping quickly (panic stop) brake pedal becomes hard and does not stop the car. Loud crunching noises are present and car proceeds another 50ft before stopping. Taken to dealer at least 4 times-they cannot "duplicate" the problem. I have almost been in two accidents as a result of this brake problem.

During a routine stop in heavy traffic on a dry smooth road, anti-lock brakes engaged at less than 10 mph, causing the vehicle stopping distance to double, resulting in minor accident, causing $1560 damage to front end of vehicle.
Consumer was traveling about 50mph on highway when another driver pulled in front of her without puting on signal she applied pedal so that she could stop, and pedal went all the way to the floor. She veered into other vehicle from behind.
Intermittently when brakes are applied while going down hill and pedal becomes hard, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer has repaired the vehicle; however, the problem still exists.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
I have the complete case history in email form, if you notify me of you address I will send.
The defective braking system malfunctioned, causing the brakes to wear unevenly which resulted in extended stopping distance, and could cause a crash. Please provide further information.
Car has been back to dealership 5 times for brake problems. The pedal locks up when trying to stop making stopping almost impossible to do . They advise the problem is normal.
Abs brakes are far too sensitive. It is nearly impossible to stop on a snowy grade.
After an accident, my right rear door will not open from the inside. Occasionally, you cannot start it on the first try. The brakes lock and the tires do not tread although they are both under 6 months old.
When driving at any speed and applying the brakes there is a grinding sound/ knocking noise when releasing the brake's and the dealer can't determine the caus eof the problem.
Abs brake problem; anti lock brakes locked up, causing driver to skid 127 feet before stopping. Driver hit an embankment, and vehcle did a 180 degree turn. This happened when braking in an emergency situation. No inclement weather. Please provide any further information.
Braking system malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to have a "metal to metal" sound, and extended stopping distance which may result in a crash. Dealer cannot determine cause of the problem. Please provide further information.
When first starting vehicle steering wheel locks up and continues not to move as a result of the wheel locking , brakes will also not work.
Abs starts rapid action at slightest bump on road (even slightly raised painted intersection road lines) causing greatly increased stopping distances and almost resulting in rear end collisions.
Rear brake system shakes and lurches. . . Wheels lock up and release. . . Car skids for short periods of time causing car to attempt to run off roadway. . . This happens most often in wet conditions. Car was returned to dealer who "cleaned rear brake drums" and told us the problem was fixed. Last night the car was almost involved in two accidents when daughter was driving in wet conditions at speeds in 35 to 45 mph range when braking system locked up twice causing car to skid. Father can cause brakes to lock up in dry conditions duplicating brake lock up in wet conditions.
While traveling at a slow speed the brake pedal was depressed, but it felt like it was locked and it would not go down, causing the car to rear end the truck in front of it .
While driving gradually on wet pavement abs brakes malfunctioned, causing the wheels to lock up and skid which may result in a crash. Dealer cannot determine the reason, and won't look at the vehicle. Please provide further information and VIN#.
While driving about 15 mph applied brakes to stobut vehicle did not stop until a few feet away.
