Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System Problems of Chevrolet Cavalier

Consumer received NHTSA recall campaign 02v286000 concerning rack and pinion steering. He took vehicle to dealer for service. Several days later, after replacing the defective component, he experienced the same problem. Power steering failed when making a right turn at various speeds.

Nhtsa recall 02v286000 concerning power steering assembly. After having the lower pinion bearing replaced consumer was unable to turn left. Vehicle was taken back to the dealer, and the mechanic could not duplicate the problem.

Car went out of control and could not steer it back onto highway, car hit telephone pole and I was taken to the hospital and the car was totaled.

Recall 02v286000 concerning power steering assembly. The steering wheel intermittently locked up when making left turns. Consumer saw on NHTSA website that there was a recall on this problem involving 1996-1998 vehicles, but the 1999 vehicle was not included in this recall. The dealer replaced the power steering gear assembly.

We have had a problem with losing the power steering for over two years. At first, I thought the car stalled and then regained the motor as the power steering came back on. This problems has happened to four members of my family and we never put it together until recently we had our local dealer inspect the system and was told " it couldn't happen " when I found NHTSA on line, I now believe that the dealer was not being honest.

Power steering kept going out. Consumer has taken vehicle to dealer on 3 different occasions, and each time the same defect occurred. This affected consumer's ability to take full control of vehicle which could lead to an accident.

The power steering locks hard. Yh.

Loss of power assist three times, have not driven since 7/1/99. We are taking in for service 7/7/99.

The steering locks up. Nlm.

While driving straight, dry road condition, vehicle changed lanes and vehicle went out of control, resulting in a crash and injuries. Also vehicle was totaled.

While driving the power steering shut down, causing the vehicle to spin out of control. Vehicle is at dealership.

Power steering goes out when turning to the left. The dealer states the no problem can be found. Our power steering goes out intermittenly every since we got this Cavalier. The dealer has said that they could never duplicate the problem and hence could not fix the problem. The loss of steering has become so bad that I will not allow my wife to use this car. I will not let anyone use this car until the steering( a safety issue) is resolved.

Our daughter alicia came to a complete stop at oak street, she made a left hand turn onto broadway. When the steering wheel was coming back out of the turn it jerked it out of her hand and her car swerved to the right and she ran over a grate over drainage and hit curb which blew out two front tires, then she jumped curb stopping car one foot from tree. She had only one tire left on road other three were in yard. Alicia was not injured, though she was very shaken up. We called adr which sent a towing truck to the 1700 block of broadway to pick her car up. There was a mrs. Petry who was behind alicia when this happened. She sta;yed with alicia until I arrived on the scene. No police report was filed though a police car did drive by while we were waiting for a tow truck. I called gm immediately to see if there was any recalls on the rack and pinion. I called again on Monday, July 22, but I did not have vehicle # in front of me. I called back on July 24th Wednesday about 10:30 a. M. In the meantime I have been on internet and I have spoken to a few people who know things about cars. I have found out that gm has had numerous problems with rack and pinion for years. . There has even been recalls. I talked to a cynthia mcdonald on July 24th about 10:30 a. M. And she took down a lot of information about what happened where vehicle is , so forth. She assigned #1-187-50-241 and sent this information to the product allocation resolution dept. And told me that I would for sure hear something in two business days. I called on Monday and was told that don latimer #57748 at the business resource center at 1-800-231-1841 had this file and should contact me before the end of the day. On Tuesday I was too busy at work to call. On Wednesday July 31, I called at least three times and left at least t wo voice mails for mr. Latimer . I was told not to get the car fixed until I heard back from gm, I am afraid that I will be charged storage.

A valve inside the power steering mechanism is stuck, causing the steering to be inoperative and allowing it to jerk from side to side, causing a safety hazard.

While trying to make a left turn the steering wheel locked and the vehicle crashed into a guard rail. The consumer received a recall notice campaign # 02v28600 with the subject power steering assembly. The consumer contacted the manufacturer Chevrolet. The representative stated that the vehicle was under that recall and a gm representative would make contact and test the vehicle. The gm representative called the consumer and stated that the recall part would be fixed but no other assistance would be provided.

Lower pinion bearing in power steering gear may separate causing a loss of power steering assist when making left turns at low speed.
