Steering Rack Problems of Chevrolet Cavalier

The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. While driving 10 mph, the power steering locked and the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel. The vehicle was towed to the mechanic and they stated that the steering rack needed to be replaced. As of July 24, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 83,656. Updated 01/11/08. A broken wheel stud and nut were replaced. Updated.

A recall repair on the steering mechanism was performed in 2003; less than four years later, the same repair was needed at an exorbitant cost due to the failure of the recall-replaced part. Chevy refused monetary assistance. Is it common practice to place defective parts in recalls so the consumer has to pay the repair, hence the company getting their money back for the recall repair? thank goodness no one was injured when the steering mechanism broke.

Safety recall and reimbursement. Certain passenger vehicles and Mini vans have lower pinion bearing in the power rack and pinion assembly in which the retainer tabs were not crimped properly. These and some other retainers used in vehicles assembled between January 1,1996 and October 31,1997 that could fail and permit the ball bearing to escape. So the consumer requested reimbursement for defective parts brought before the recall was issued. Dealer was notified.

Consumer received a recall regarding the rack and pinion however no parts were available.

Rack & pinion steering kept going out. This causes vehicle to jerk left. This was second time it has happened. Had the problem repaired previously, but has reappeared again. Did not lose control of vehicle.

Power steering rack needs replacing with less than 14 months ownership. The car was purchased new in tennessee. The diagnostic and estimate of the repair was provided by nalley Chevrolet. I am unsure of the risk of driving the car safely until I can afford the >$1100 repair. The car has not been involved in any kind or type oaf accident. Please advise.
