Chevrolet C/k Pickups owners have reported 6 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My antilock brakes are not working properly. Atlow speeds mthe antilock motor comes on and pushes back against the brake pedal. I have had this repaired 4 times with new speed sensors on the front brakes and still I am having this trouble.

I have a 1998 chevy pickup truck with anti-lock brakes. For the last 2 years, the anti-lock brakes would activate whenever the vehicle is moving at speeds less than 10 mph; this makes it difficult when trying to stop at slow speeds. I recently found out that 1999 & 2000 chevy pickup trucks have a recall for the same abs problem that I am experiencing with my 1998 truck. I went to the dealer to discuss this recall with them and they said that it was caused by the speed sensor and that it was the same problem that the recall was addressing, but because my truck was a 1998, they could not do anything unless Chevrolet gave them the ok. I went to Chevrolet's customer service and they said they would not cover it under the recall. I talked to another owner of a 1998 chevy pickup and his truck had the same abs problem. His solution to the problem was removing the abs fuse. My concern is that Chevrolet has a known problem with the 1998 abs system as well, but in the interest of saving money, they are not including it in their recall. I feel that since 1998 vehicles have the same anti-lock brake issues as the 1999 and 2000 vehicles, 1998 vehicles should be included in the recall as well.

2001 Chevrolet 1500 ext. Cab 4wd truck abs system activates at low speed. The incident occured in a parking lot as the truck was pulling into a parking space. The abs system activiated and there was a complete loss of breaking power. The truck hit the car in the parking space opposite the truck. Upon inspection of the truck, the front rotors were almost completely absent of a usable wear surface on the inside of the rotor, the external side of the rotor did not exhibit the same probelm. New rotors were installed with new pads at owner's expense. Abs activation at low speed then still occurred. I purchased a subscription for the alldata website to retreive applicable service bulletins. The service bulletin lists the wheel speed sensor as the possible fault. Upon examination, the sensor also had the same rust problem as the rotor. The sensers will also be replaced a owner's expense ($110/per sensor). The was no mention of any rotor problems in the bulletin. A 2001 vehicle with 85,000 miles should not have the rotor damage that existed. I have saved the rotors as an example. Also, the abs activation's complete lack of breaking power, beyond what is expected in normal abs activation circumstances, make me luckly to have hit another vehicle and not a person.

I began to have trouble with my brakes in September of 2004. At very low speeds (under 5mph) my anti lock brakes would start firing for no apparent reason. I took the vehicle into the shop and they cleaned the speed sensors on the abs. A few weeks later, the abs started to do the same thing again. I took the vehicle back in and they did some kind of test on the speed sensors. They reported back to me that one of the speed sensors had gone bad. They replaced the speed sensor at that time, oct 11, 2004. I have not had any problems since but have seen a report with certain vehicles being recalled for this problem. My vehicle is not one that has been recalled but has the same problem described in the recall I read. How can you say wisconsin is not part of the salt belt?? that seems ridiculous.
The antilock brakes on 1997 Chevrolet w/t 4wd pickup kept activating on dry pavement. I understand gm has had similar problems with other trucks but won't recognize the problem with this truck. This is my second complaint and I just emailed gm again about the problem. They told me to take it to a dealer to have it diagnosed. I would have to pay for the service and gm would contact the dealer to see if they (gm) would pay to repair it. I don't want to do this because I'm afraid I might get stuck with the whole bill. I had the truck to a dealer once and they told me it was the speed sensors and I would have to pay to fix it. Against my better judgment I disconnected the abs system because it wasn't safe to drive the way it was. It has been a couple years since I complained about this matter but it has been on my mind for a long time. I paid for abs brakes, they don't work like they should, they are unsafe, and gm won't stand behind it. That's the bottom line. If thousands of other year trucks have this problem, why won't they take care of mine. My son had a 1997 s-10 Chevrolet pickup with the same problem only he hit a parked vehicle when the brakes didn't work and demolished this truck. No one was hurt but his insurer blamed him and raised his premium. It was general motors fault! I told them I was driving the truck with the abs system deactivated but it's like they're telling me it's not their problem. I guess it's only a safety issue if they say it's a safety issue. I am not sure of the exact dates of the occurrences anymore so I just estimated. Could you please let me know if I have any recourse?.
