6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2012

While backing car up steering went out. Steering wheel would spin around. Found out that the lower shaft in steering column and the gear coming out of steering rack separated. Had to change steering rack / lower shaft / clock spring. Cost $1200. 00 if this had happened while driving @ 65 mph with no control things would have been a lot more serious. I have my 24 month old baby in the car most of the time. Checked recalls and there seems to be none for this year car, but there is a recall for 2006 with similar problems.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

When maneuvering the vehicle my steering wheel seizes up over and over again while making a turn. Consequently it must be turned hard to overcome this resistance. Often this causes the driver to over steer. It does this repeatedly even when going through the same turn. Correcting the over steer is also plagued by these same spots of hard resistance. If you turn the steering wheel while the car is not moving you can feel the same problem. Had the front end of the car inspected and those components are in good shape. You can hear a sound coming from the steering column when resistance is felt. The car had safety recall # 10023 repair done on 6/14/2010 at dutch Chevrolet in belfast, maine (repair order 25485). I called chevy and they said that the recall repair was warranted for 12 months or miles which ever came first. I have an appointment today 5/1/12 to have it looked at by the same dealer. The representative from chevy said they will follow up on this however they did not offer to cover the cost of the repair. Bad enough that the problem is chronic, a real safety concern, but worse yet chevy won't even take responsibility for a lifetime warranty on a recall repair. This is unconscionable. The consumer stated he went to the local dealer to have the steering problem diagnosed. It turned out the problem was not directly related to the original repair of the electric steering assist unit after all. Rather, the intermediate steering shaft u-joint needed to be replaced. The charge was slightly under $250. After discussing the problem with the warranty division, the consumer was given a discount of $150. 00. The consumer no longer wished to pursue his complaint. Updated ivoq 06/15/12.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

I own a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, the power steering and traction control lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle then began to jerk and become difficult to drive. The vehicle had to be towed to an authorized dealer and repaired under NHTSA campaign id number 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system); but the dealer told me that there no recall for my vehicle, apparently they was base on the vehicle VIN # instead of model/made/year of the car. The dealer told me I need to replace steering column which will cost me close to $1000 w/part, labor & taxes. Pickup my car on the same day late afternoon, was able to drive home with no incident. However, the failure recurred the next day, again towed the car back to the dealership, the manufacturer was aware of the failure. The vehicle was awaiting further inspection at the dealership, in the meantime I'm driving the rental that was provided by the dealership. This is mfg defected problem, I should not have to paid to fix the steering column.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2011

Chevy Cobalt have had power steering motor replaced twice, still no power steering, now dealership says it needs a new steering column for 1000. 00,which I cant afford, have hadt o replace computer module for motor, replace rims that were out of round, head lights bulbs come loose and dont work , loses power and the car feels like it has run into a wall it jerks so hard, steering locks up without notice, key gets stuck in ignition. All of these have happened to my fine chevy product, when is chevy going to do something about it.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2011

My 2005 chevy Cobalt has been having some issues with a knocking sound while driving. Almost sounds as if something was loose and hitting something else is the only way I know to descrive it. People who have drove in my car thought it was bad shocks or struts, but those have been checked and working fine. It makes the noise while driving, hitting normal bumps in the road, etc. I had a mechanic look at it and he replaced some lower arm bushings in the front end. But that did not fix the problem. He looked at a service bulletin and narrowed my problem down to two things. One being the electric motor in the steering column. This part was supposedly replaced by my local dealer when chevy put out a recall on it. The other part was the steering gear that turns the wheel. He said this could could cost up to $500 to replace and didn't want to take a chance and that not be it. I did not have the money to replace it any way. He said he did not see a safety issue driving the car as is for now. But I wanted to report the problem in case others with this vehicle are having the same issues so a recal can be done.

11 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

The car was taken in on 6/3/10 as a part of the recall of the electric power motor. Prior to that time there had been two incidents where all of a sudden the steering column would lock, the car would shut off and after stopping, and restarting the car would start. We thought the problem was solved. The week of February 15, 2011 two incidents happened with my daughter 21 years old in the car. The first was after she hit a small pot hole, the steering column locked she pulled over restarted the car. The same week she was driving on I-94 at 60 miles per hour the steering column locked, she was able to get to side of the road, and restart the car. On February 22 or 23, 2011 we took the car in to george matick Chevrolet to ask them to check the recall work because it was the same problem. The representatives there said that we had to pay $95. 00 for an inspection. They indicated that there was no problem with the recall work that they did, and more then likely it was an ignition switch that would have to be replaced and the cost for that would be approximately $500. 00 I would not pay for an inspection because this is exactly the same problem that we had previously and this is extremely dangerous as you can not tell when or how it will happen. The inspection of the recall work that they did was simply sitting behind the wheel of the car and attesting that there was no problem. I took the car to my normal mechanic who did a diagnostic and he could find nothing wrong and said we would have to wait until it failed again. The problem is that someone can get killed with this. This recall did not solve this problem or the motor I received in the car is still defective. I would like a definitive answer to this problem before someone gets hurt.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2010

I have a 2005 chevy Cobalt that was recalled for the power steering column. I began having difficulties with my power steering suddenly going out in Feb 2010. I brought it to get looked at and was told my car was fine. I brought it back in when they power steering column was recalled. Since I have gotten the power steering column replaced I have continued to have the same problems with the power steering. I have been in contact with gm and chevy and have brought my car back to the dealership several times and was told by all three that there "was nothing more they could do. " the problem has gotten so bad that my car will jolt when the power steering goes out making the car very difficult to drive. I will pull off the road and turn my car off for approx. 15 minutes. This problem occurs at low speeds. May 29, 2010 was the last dated issue.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

I previously submitted a complaint on the power steering on my 2005 chevy Cobalt. I had the power steering motor replaced before recall and was told that I can get a refund on the repair. Now I have a rattle when driving in the steering column area and concerns me. I wonder if driving with the power steering issues I had caused more damage to my car. It feels very loose and I am concern I may loose control of my vehicle.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) this is the second time my 2005 chevy Cobalt power steering went out on me in the past year. The first time I had the whole steering column replaced and it cost me 400. 00 for a used part and labor (a new part was way too expensive). That was April 2009. This past week it has gone out again, and I do not have the extra money to get repaired at the time. When I start my car the power steering is fine until I drive about a block or two then the "power steering" alert comes up on the dash board and it will not fix unless I shut off the car and start all over again. But this only correct the problem for another block or two. [xxx].

20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

At 53,000 miles my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt experianced a severe power steering loss. While driving 65 miles per hour, my steering froze to the point of very little control of my vehicle. I could barely get it pulled over to the side of the road. I turned off the ignition, sat for a few minutes, then re-started my car. No problem. I began driving again and after going less than a mile, the same incident happened. No steering! I immediately drove my car to my dealer. They had to replace the steering column and assist motor. . . To the tune of $848. 13!! needless to say, this is something I could ill afford. After doing some research on this problem, I realized that numerous Cobalt owners had the same problem! it was even mentioned in the 02/02/2010 issue of USA today. I believe that Chevrolet should do the right thing and recall these vehicles now! why do they wait for someone to be killed or maimed because of their faulty workmanship?! no wonder american automakers are going to be a thing of history in the near future. At least Toyota stepped up to the plate and is doing the right thing for their customers.

28 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2009

Power steering in 2005 chevy Cobalt going out causing steering to be very hard to control especially on sharp turns. Can be corrected if car is shut off and restarted but goes back out without warning. Almost got in a serious wreck coming off an interstate ramp where power steering went out without warning and came about 1/2 foot away from colliding with guardrail. Was told that cost of repair is about $2000 and the entire steering column would have to be replaced. Now the power steering is going out continuously. There is no specific speed as I have been going any from 5 mph to 55 mph when it goes out. Have owned car for about 15 months. I have seen many complaints and blogs on the internet regarding the same issue but no recalls have been made. This is a very serious issue and with all the complaints that I have seen I would think there would have been a recall by now.

31 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

My 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt with 47,000 miles. While driving, I was steering into a sharp turn and the power steering quit working. I fought it to the side of the road nearly hitting a tree. Once stopped I shut the car off. Looked under the hood and found no leaks or visible damage. I started the car and I had power steering again. This incident happened a week later driving down the road. Again pulled off the road and nothing visible seem to be wrong. Started the vehicle again and again I have power steering. Just a few days passed and my wife was driving the car taking our son to pre-school. Started to turn right off our road and the power steering went out and was nearly hit by an oncoming car because she could not continue to turn the steering wheel. Now the power steering is always out / not working. The dealership is saying that gm wants them to replace the steering column. $940. 00 plus tax. This does not always fix the problem he says. He also told me that gm does not no exactly what the problem is and that they were supposedly researching. I have done some internet research myself and found that thousands are having this problem from model years 2005 through 2009 to include the hhr and ion. Please help.
