1 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2017

I had recall 10v073000 performed by the dealer due to noticing my steering was getting tight then sloppy. The dealer replaced the motor and said the slop in the steering was a bad intermediate steering shaft. So I bought that and had it installed, not at the dealer because they where ridiculous in price, and it fixed nothing. There was still slop and wandering while driving. After a while, making left turns I would head a clunk and it would still be difficult to turn. Then while making a slow left turn it was really tight and then a loud clunk then the steering became really loose and the vehicle lost steering until I turned the wheel more and it finally grabbed. It happens more frequently now. I was told the rack is now damaged. The intermediate shaft that was recommended by the dealer was an incorrect diagnosis when I had the recall performed. The failure of the motor put excess stress on the rack which caused the gears to wear is what an independent shop told me. Gm is telling me that I have to spend more money to get a "proper diagnosis" from the dealer when at the time the recall was performed they had diagnosed it incorrectly.

2 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2016

I was parked. I returned to vehicle and started vehicle. The power steering light on dash illuminated and my steering was very hard to manuever. I managed to drive the car back to our hotel, but was fearful of driving any further. Had it towed home.

3 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2014

Had no issues all day until all of sudden we were leaving a parking lot. I'm at the stop sign when I went to press the gas to go, I hear a chime - no indication lights come on- car acts like it's going to stall (it doesn't), steering is very hard and a clicking noise is coming from the gear shift area. Do not feel safe driving it all, although it's moveable but very rough/bogging out. Recently had the ignition recall recently, had a few issues pop up since then but nothing as serious as this. Had to get it towed to my mechanic, he replaced a few sensors, but clicking noise still remains and is undriveable.

4 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2014

I got into my car and when I turned on the car it said "power steering" and the check engine light was on I tried to drive home and the steering wheel was stiff and hard to turn. The odometer would not move from 0 to show me the speed I was going and the car was making some clicking sounds as I was driving.

5 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2014

I was traveling at 40 mph when the check engine and traction control lights lit up on the dashboard. Steering was extremely hard, the power steering was not working and I pulled into the nearest parking lot. After several times restarting the car, the power steering was working again.

6 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2014

I was driving down the road and the power steering message came across the dash. The wheel started locking up and I heard a clicking noise down near the shifter. Also the speedometer kept jumping back and forth as I was going down the road. I had to stop and pull over. I shut my car off and waited for a minute. I started the car and took off down the road. As I pulled away it started chugging a little like it was trying to jump speeds?. . The steering wheel was still tight and it continued until I reached my destination. When I would stop at a red light it took me awhile to make my turns. When I finally reached my destination I shut my car off and let it sit for awhile and it stopped doing it. Until the next time. That was in may of 2014 and it has happened a handful of times since then while my two young children were in the car. Im just now learning of a power steering recall on '05 chevy Cobalt models. I bought my car this year.

7 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

My wife's Chevrolet Cobalt was part of the power steering motor recall and received the repair on may 26, 2010. The car functioned normally until March 31 of 2013 when the Cobalt, with only 17, 321 miles, was brought to the local Chevrolet dealership after my wife experienced a failure of the power steering. Next I accompanied my wife to the parking lot where it had been parked and discovered that upon re-starting, the car functioned normally. The check engine light however was on. We took the car to the dealership on Feb. 1, 2013 where the power steering problem and check engine light was discussed. The technicians indicated that they could find nothing wrong with the power steering, simply stating that, "¿¿it works now!" on Friday March 8, 2013, the power steering message appeared on the speedometer, a chime sounded, and the power steering went out. I managed to drive the car home and park it. The steering was very hard to operate, as the power steering was not functioning. If my wife had been driving, I seriously doubt whether she would have been able to control the car. During this same incident the engine ran extremely rough and almost died several times. This car simply is not safe. The recall repair was not successful suggesting that general motors had its dealers perform on the Cobalt was not the correct one. (was it the most economical for g. M. ?). Since that time we have driven less than 500 miles and it is now fourteen months later! we are afraid to drive this car.

8 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2010

I have a 2005 chevorlet Cobalt with approximately 76,000 miles. While driving the message display on the instrument panel flashes " power steering" and the car becomes very difficult to control. The steering is extremely tight. If I cycle power the problem resets but recurs almost immediately. This problem continues to happen every time the car is driven.

9 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

The power steering light comes on and the steering wheel is very hard to operate. The key also gets stuck in the ignition.

10 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

Driving down the road and at any random point the power steering light goes on, now the steering wheel is extremely hard to turn. This occurs on a daily basis. The amount of times this happens is very random. The most times it has happened in a day is 7 driving within a 30 mile radius. The only temporary thing to fix it is try to safely pull off the road and shut the car off and start it back up, but it can go out again within the next mile.

11 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2009

I bought a 2005 chevy Cobalt lt sedanfrom carmax in June 2008. Since I have had it the power steering has frozen numerous time during driving, locking up while going 45 mph is very dangerous to say the least. I have taken this car back to the dealer and they claim not to find anything wrong with the car. Now the power steering will lock up one day and the next day it will be fine for two-three weeks, then the same thing will happen again only worse. First time it happened, the power steering was slow to respond and the transmission was jerky. The second time, the power steering was hard to turn the lights came on in the drivers info center indicating a problem and the transmission started making clicking noises. The third time the power steering actually froze during driving, all the dashboard lights came on and the transmission, speed odometer all were acting if there was water in the gas or something meaning it was not responding when I put my foot on the gas. I have taken it back to carmax, they acknowledge a problem, but they "cant fix", they then say it has to be taken to a gm dealer who say they cant detect a problem during a diagnostic test. This a very dangerous situation and a very dangerous car to drive. I have refused to drive unless they fix the power steering, they have kept my car waiting for it to "duplicate" the problem which is ridiculous. This car needs to be recalled and that power steering system replaced. Gm knows that this is a huge problem but refuses to now even listen to any complaints now that they are in bankruptcy. But this car definitely needs to be recalled before someone is killed.

12 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2009

Steering motor was determined defective by gm at 50k miles. Tires wood catch grooves in the road pulling the car unexpectedly. Shuttering of steering wheel while going straight. Knocking/ rattle sounds from steering column on rough/ bumpy roads. This happens all the time. These problems started about 35k, right after my warranty expired. After contacting gm and a chevy dealership, the cost will be $850. And it is a "common problem", design error. At 52k driving normally down the road, power steering shut off, "power steering" displayed, and the steering wheel was excessively hard to turn.

13 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2009

2005 chevy Cobalt with approx 45000 miles. Power steering warning light appears and then steering wheel is hard to maneuver. Did google search and found huge numbers of complaints about the same thing with the same model car. After warning light appears, if the ignition is turned off and then back on the light disappears and the steering is ok again for a while. Took car to Chevrolet dealer and they said the entire steering column needed to be replaced at a cost of $800+. How can such a major problem occur on a relatively new car and there is no re-call?.

14 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2008

We have a chevy 2005 Cobalt. The front end make a really bad riddling noise and sometimes the steering is hard. I call and took it to a dealer and they said they was no recalls. I said I heard it on tv and also the papers. My daughter is the one that drives this car most of the time. I want to know is she going to be safe. Please let me know ASAP. I don't want anything to happen to her. Its asking for a date of incident I'm not sure. Guess? the noise is mostly on rough roads. The steering is about one time every ?? thank you please let me know.
