1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that while driving out of a parking lot, the power steering malfunctioned and was no longer controlling the wheels. After inspecting the vehicle she noticed that the wheels were side ways. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the rack and pinion exploded and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 181,000 and the current mileage was 183,000.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2009

Bought a used 2005 chevy Cobalt for my son when he graduated from high school. It had less than 30,000 miles on it but no warranty because of the year. A couple of weeks later he started having problems with the power steering. In researching the problem I have found that it is a major issue with the 2005 and 2006 Cobalt. The dealership is well aware of the problem but their hands are tied because no recall has been issued. When you spend the money to replace the rack and pinion and the power steering motor it is a new design so chevy is obviously aware of the problem because they redesigned the faulty part. I will pay the $2,000 to get my son's car repaired because his safety is a priority. What I don't understand is with the number of complaints how has chevy gotten away with not issuing a recall. The power steering comes and goes randomly and if you are pulling on a steering wheel with no power and suddenly the power steering comes back you are likely to lose control and hit something or someone. My guess is that someone will have to be killed before it becomes an issue and I don't understand why it has to get to that point before they are forced to do something.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2009

There were no events leading to the failure of the power steering system. I was driving the car under my everyday commute and the power steering system went out and the message center flashed power steering. Since the initial failure there has been no power steering in my vehicle. The system appears to function properly until driving begins and then the steering system shuts down and leaves me with just a rack and pinion system to operate with.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2006

: the contact stated while making right hand turns there is a binding and vibration felt in the steering wheel. The problem is getting progressively worse. The dealership determined there was an engineering design flaw possibly with the rack and pinion. The dealership also informed the contact there was currently not a fix for this, but the manufacturer was working on finding a remedy for this problem.
