7 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2014

On 6/22/14, I was coming home from philadelphia and while on the brunswick highway, my 2005 chevy Cobalt's dashboard lit up like a christmas tree and I lost my power steering, traction control, brakes, abs, engine lock, door locks were clicking on and off and I had to pull over 4 times off the highway. My odometer didn't work either. This also made my transmission jerk and slip. It was so bad that when it was switching gears, it was making my entire car shake. I was afraid for my life. I nearly crashed into a semi-truck because my brakes and power steering didn't work. Also, I couldn't go below 65mph on the highway because the transmission was slipping. I made it home but I was still shocked and scared. The next day I took it to the dealership to get it looked at. I thought it was the recall problem with the ignition but they couldn't find what the main cause was. They said it wasn't ignition but some sort of computer glitch. All they did was reset the computer and recommended me to buy anew car battery. I got the new battery and every was fine. On 7/714, the same issue happened again but worse. It happened while my car was parked and again the dashboard lit up. Everything went off again, I lost my power steering, traction control, brakes, abs, engine lock, door locks were clicking on and off. It took me 6 times restarting the car for the dashboard to be cleared, and then 5 minutes again, the car chimed, and I lost my power steering, traction control, abs and the odometer didn't work again. I nearly crashed again too. I took it again to the the dealership. On 7/8/14, they told me they replaced the recalled ignition switch, but they still couldn't find the root of the cause of the major electrical issue in my car. They did say my car isn't safe to drive on the road. They asked me to leave it for a couple of days to see if they can find the problem.

8 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

On June 18, 2014 while driving 45 miles per hour I suddenly lost power steering in the vehicle and the engine kept cutting out like it was going to shut off. I pulled into a store parking lot and the shifter would not work properly when trying to get it into park. Power steering light, engine light and several other lights appeared on my dashboard. . I called the dealership on June 18, 2014 to notify them of my power steering going out and the other issues described above. They told me parts were still not available. I did receive a call back that they did in fact have the part and to bring in the vehicle on June 19, 2014. My husband drove the vehicle 35 miles to the dealership with no power steering, the engine wanted to die every time he came to a stop and acted erratically the whole drive there. According to the invoice received the dealership mileage on my vehicle was 114, 340 and they performed recall 10023 v220 removed and replaced power steering motor with motor kit 1 19257875 motor kit. On June 20, 2014 the car was driven 320 miles. On June 21, 2014 I I had no power steering. On June 23, 2014 I had to have a wrecker service tow my vehicle back to the dealership. . On July 18, 2014 I picked up my vehicle. According to the invoice received the dealer performed recall 13454 (f-cylinder kit ), performed recall 14113 (removed and replace ignition cylinder and programmed 2 new keys per recall 14113). The mileage they say was on my vehicle on this invoice dated 7/18/14 was 114, 292. Don't know how my mileage went backwards??? on July 28, 2014 driving to work at 4:30 am going 60 mph my power steering light comes on, the engine is cutting out, the dashboard lights up, the speedometer needle is flickering uncontrollably and I have no where to pull over. This is the 3rd time power steering problem due to gm recall. Help!!!.

Failure Date: 04/25/2014

As I was driving down the road at 57mph the power steering sign came on and a noise then I sudden lost power steering. I slowed down and pulled over and cut off. I then cut the car back on and the power steering light went off. Then I drove on and then the power steering went back out. I contacted the dealership were I got it from and they said it was nothing that they could do. They told me to contact GMC dealer company. GMC told me they could fix it but I would have to pay out my pocket.

10 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

I have received (both) recall work done on my 05 Cobalt, and yesterday I was driving on the highway at 55-60mph for the first time since I got my car back last Friday. I lost power steering and my car would no longer shift to increase its speed. It felt like I was in neutral gear as the rpms were in the 5000-6000 range yet I was still at a speed of apprx 55mph, as I attempted to pull over to the shoulder I recognized I did not have power steering, and the light on my dash quickly went off and then came back, along with a check engine light. After finding out what the engine codes were via autozone, I was told my transmission control module had failed, hence why my transmission would not engage into third gear. After driving the car around more that afternoon, it continued to happen at the high speed levels, and again the power steering failed. I brought it up to the chevy dealership that performed the work, yet the service department was closed at 7pm. The sale guy tried to convince me that this recall would not affect anything with the transmission, yet multiple mechanics have told me that if the new piece was not programmed properly with my ecm, then its possible that this is affecting my vehicle. I am going to try and bring my car back in tonight after work, or hopefully tomorrow. I have already call general motors and reported the same incident, because there is a rumor going online that the new ignition switch may have a "short" in it. But I do not want to confirm that.

11 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

As im driving from a fast rate of speed and I slow down I lose power steering and on multiple times I have come close to hitting vehicles as im parking or almost running into a house for not being able to turn.

12 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2013

At random times, my 2005 chevy Cobalt will pop up a "check engine" light and a "traction control" light, where I lose my power steering, the motor shifts hard into each gear, and the motor runs very rough. Also, there are clicking sounds at the shifter, like it is trying to shift into a gear or something. This is a serious hazard and as I've read online, I am not the only one this has happened to. There are thousands of others. This entire car needs to be recalled because no one knows what is doing this!.

13 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2013

When starting up the vehicle, the check engine and traction lights are lit up. The gauges fluctuate, as well as the temperture reading blinks. Loud clicking sounds can be heard coming from the shift selector. The steering wheel will not turn due to loss of power steering. After shutting off vehicle, the ignition will not release keys for about 15-20 seconds. Have also lost power steering on freeway at speeds of 70 mph. Have attempted to have gm and the dealership resolve the issue, first by having the recalled parts replaced. Problem is recurring for third time, after being "handled" by the dealership the last two times. A very dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem.

14 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

My car was in the recall for power steering and I had the dealership replace the parts. I believe the recall was in 2010. Within the last year I had the power steering motor replaced because it was doing the same thing it was doing before the recall. I lose power steering and the car jerks intermittently. There is no warning and it happens at all speeds. I was told to pull off to the side of the road, turn the car off and it should fix itself. Unfortunately, the car started doing the same thing tonight. I am horrified that this is still happening and feel like the car is a death trap. I don't feel safe driving it and especially not with my children in the car. I plan on taking this issue up with Chevrolet again, in the hopes that they should pay for it. Please contact me for further information, I feel very strongly that this car should be recalled again for this issue.

15 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2011

This incident occurred at about 9:30pm on the night of 9/21/11. The failure of the air bags and steering occurred on NJ state route 78 west, about 50 feet before the ramp to route 31. There was no traffic congestion on the road, and visibility was good. I was fully awake, and was familiar with driving this route on a daily basis. While I was driving my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt home from college, my vehicle lost power steering right before I got onto the ramp. Keep in mind that my vehicle was traveling completely straight at the time when the power steering light came on, and about half a second later my vehicle began spinning to the right. Before I could slow down or straighten the car, my vehicle had rotated almost a full 90 degrees to the right. At this point the ramp had started, and thus to avoid hitting the guard rail on the right side of the road I made a strong effort to turn the wheel to the left and straighten my car. I succeeded in turning the wheel to the left, and thus straightened my car out until my car then started to spin to the left, and bounced off of the guard rail on the left side of the ramp at approximately 40mph. A couple seconds elapsed from when the power steering light came on, to when my car hit the guard rail. After the car bounced off of the guard rail, it continued to spin for another 270 degrees, and came to rest on the narrow shoulder, parallel to the road. The air bag did not deploy, and after I shut the car off and turned it back on, the power steering warning light had disappeared entirely. Although I drove the car off of the ramp, as I was instructed to by police, the car was totaled due to significant damage to the front of the body and frame of the vehicle. After the incident I discovered the previous recall on the power steering motor, however when I checked with the dealer, their records indicated that the recall was fulfilled.

16 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

Not sure exactly when it happened, but it has been occurring for years now. I have spent thousands of dollars in diagnostics, parts, and labor trying to fix the mystery problem! I'm fed up! it seems to happen randomly and fix itself randomly. Sometimes it lasts a couple days and sometimes longer than a couple weeks. The problem: my car will lose power steering, it starts shifting really hard and the gauges inside get all screwed. Occasionally when it happens it just won't shift at all. It will stay in first gear. The inside gauges: the speedometer will bounce all over the place, never staying still. The radio will also get loud and quiet by itself. The power locks would frantically go up and down themselves, until I took out the spark plug for those. It is very difficult to drive when the power steering goes out, not like cars that were built without it in the first place. The very hard shifting cannot be good for the car and is dangerous when I am driving during winter months or rainy weather. I live in michigan and it snows a lot. Even the chevy dealership can't tell me what is wrong and I have paid to have numerous parts replaced that have not fixed the problem. I've read other boards online with people having the same issue. I just cannot afford to keep paying to not get the problem fixed. I hate driving such an unreliable car with two young children, four years and 10 months. It happened multiple times when my little one was a newborn. Felt like I was giving the poor baby whiplash when the car switched gears. It's an automatic so there is nothing I can do about it.

17 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2011

Car loses power steering randomly, dealer wont recognize recall. Will be turning and car will all of a sudden lose the power steering causeing my car to jerk and I need to correct.

18 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2010

I have had problems with traction control light coming on and when it does the car won't shift properly (automatic), jumps and stutters and dies. Also lose power steering. This has been happening off and on ever since I got the car 5+ years ago. I have had it back to the dealership I bought it at (Dodge dealer) at least twice who took it to a chevy dealer and have had it to local chevy dealers multiple times and no one can capture any codes or fix it. Now it thinks the key is in the ignition all the time and locks don't work properly even tho I had switch replaced on recall. Searched internet and see many others have had this same problem and some said it was abs issue. Why has there been no recall?.

19 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

Was driving and lost power steering.

20 Lose Power Steering problem

22 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2010

As my 18 year old daughter was driving home from school, her power steering light went on as the warning bells in her dash rang. At that point, she lost all power steering in her car. She said that it took all of her strength to make the remaining turns to get home.

23 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

My 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt has a power steering problem. The power steering randomly goes out while driving and the problem has become more frequent. It now occurs within minutes every time I drive the car. This car has an electronic power steering system. It is extremely dangerous to lose power steering while driving, making turns, parking, etc. I have read numerous complaints from other consumers regarding this issue and I really hope that gm issues a recall to fix this problem. It is very difficult to steer the car and at this point I am nervous to drive it at all. Thank you for taking this into consideration.

24 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2010

Out of the blue my boyfriend and I were on our way home in my 2005 chevy Cobalt and we heard a ding and the power steering light came on in the car and we totally lost power steering. There was absolutely no warning what so ever. The car has been running great until this. Once I shut off the car and let it sit for awhile I will get the power steering back but within a day or 2 it happens again. This is very dangerous to be driving and lose the power steering with absolutely no warning. I haven't fixed the car yet so I'm not sure how much it is going to cost but I was told by the garage that they have to replace the entire steering column to fix it. I love my Cobalt but I am very unhappy with the way this just failed and it happened 3,000 miles after my extended warranty expired. I've been reading that the same exact problem is happening to a lot of people who own Cobalts.

25 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

My 2005 chevy Cobalt lost power steering while driving down the road, and my wife narrowly avoided a head on collision. Rather than head into on-coming traffic, she swerved toward the shoulder hitting a mailbox. I wish a gm engineer was standing there instead of the mailbox.

26 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2010

On Jan. 9th while I was driving, power steering light came on briefly. All of a sudden lost power steering. Could not control car. Luckily, I was able to get car off the side of the road. I turned call off. Restarted it and while driving it again it was hard to steer. Took car to dealer. They fixed it. They replaced ps electric assist motor.

27 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

My 2005 chevy Cobalt suddenly lost power steering while driving. It would occur everyday on and off. I would have to re-start the car in order for the power steering to come back on. If the power steering was off I couldn't turn the car (being 7 months pregnant). We had to take it in to a dealership to fix the problem and it cost an outrageous amount. I have heard this is common in these vehicles and is unacceptable. Although it did not lead to a crash in my case it very well could've.

28 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated while driving, she lost power steering capabilities making it extremely difficult to turn on two different occasions. The power steering light illuminated on the dashboard and then the power steering would fail. She turned the vehicle off and re-started it; the problem seemed to correct itself after she re-started it. She took the vehicle to a repair shop and was told that they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. She called the dealership and was informed that there was no recall for the problem. She had not called the manufacturer to-date. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage is 94,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 93,000. Updated 03/04/10 re-mailed 04/20/2010 added VIN. Updated 04/29/10/ updated 5/6/10.

29 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2009

I have a 2005 chevy Cobalt with 40,000 and the power steering intermittently doesn't work. I can turn the car off and back on and I have power steering for around 30 seconds before the dic displays "power steering" and I lose all power steering. I've taken the vehicle to the dealer and they say I need a new steering column to correct the issue at a total cost of over $900! this is ridiculous. The vehicle just went out of warranty and now I have a $900 bill. Steering is very difficult and dangerous to drive with sharp turns. I believe gm has a problem with the durability in their motor and not the steering assembly. After paying the bill at the dealership I took the old column and disassembled the electric motor. The springs for the brushes are blue/red in color signifying significant heat to them. The brushes themselves are almost non existent. There was hardly any contact onto the armature of the brushes, possibly from the springs losing strength from excessive heat. Inside the motor, it was full of dust from brushes. There's also a slight burn mark on the case of the motor on the inside where the wire from one of the brushes was close to. The dust could be conducting electricity going from the brush going straight to the case.

30 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While the contact was driving 45 mph he noticed that the power steering light had appeared on the dashboard, at the same time the vehicle lost all power steering. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 52000.

31 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2009

While operating her 05 chevy Cobalt, my wife lost power steering while exiting the interstate, causing her to run off the road and blow a tire. This has occurred on 4 other instances with this vehicle while I was operating it, causing me to replace the defective steering column at my own expense. This vehicle has 80,000 miles on it at the time of the part failure.

32 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving approximately 50 mph, the driver lost power steering and swerved onto the other side of the road; however, she was able to regain control of the vehicle. A half mile down the road, the failure recurred. When the failure occurred a third time she refused to continue driving the vehicle and notified the dealer. Several dealers advised her that she was not eligible for a free remedy since the failure was not associated with the warranty coverage. The dealer also stated that there were no related recalls. The manufacturer was not notified and the vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 76,000.

33 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving at speeds of 55 mph the power steering alarm flashed on the dashboard and triggered the alarm. Immediately, the vehicle lost power steering and proceeded to drift to the left into oncoming traffic. The contact had to utilize extreme bodily force in order to avoid crashing with oncoming traffic and maintain control of the steering wheel. She was able to maneuver the vehicle off the highway and shut off the engine. When starting the ignition, the power steering reset itself and was operating normally. The failure occurred two additional times and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he replaced the entire power steering column and assembly. There were no failures after the repairs were made. The failure mileage was 65,726 and the current mileages was 82,000. Updated 4/7/2010 the power steering assist module was replaced. Updated 05/12/10.

34 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2009

The power steering in my 2005 chevy Cobalt went out. For no apparent reason I lost my power steering while traveling through chicago. As you can imagine this makes it extremely hard to drive. Being a college student I can't afford to replace the faulty steering column. My fiance and I have owned the car for less than two years and the car had under 80,000 miles on it. There are several safety issues as I do not have complete control of the car. To add insult to injury I live in michigan and the winter driving isn't easy especially without power steering.

35 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving he heard a beeping noise, and then he lost power steering. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. The current and failure mileages were 36000.
