I was driving and my power steering light came on and I lost my power steering completely. I'm a 95 pound girl and it is impossible for me to turn my car. When I turn the car off and let it sit for a moment and start it again, the power steering comes back on for a moment and then goes out again. This is very dangerous and I am going to have to pay 1000. 00 to fix it I'm 21 years old, I don't have that kind of money laying around.

Chevy Cobalt 2005 traction control light would come on for no apparent reason starting summer of 2009. On Friday, September 2009 I was 5 blocks away from home. . . Heard "bing bing bing", lost power steering, abs made the car buck, and traction light came on. I drove the car 4 blocks to my mechanic who advised me to get the car towed to a chevy dealer which I did. Hawthorne Chevrolet said they couldn't find the problem. On the internet if you type Cobalt 2005 defects multiple reports of the same problem are being reported to gm. Gm denies a problem and will not cover the repair. I am frightened to drive this car as you get no warning of failure.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving 55 mph he lost power steering which made it difficult to maneuver the steering wheel. He was able to safely drive to the emergency lane, shut the vehicle off and restart it. The power steering disengaged and resumed normal driving function. A local mechanic determined that the electrical power steering unit was failing and the repair cost would be approximately 2,000. The manufacturer stated that the failure is a common occurrence; however, since the warranty expired no compensation would be offered. The failure mileage was 89,000 and the current mileage was 91,000.
Power steering began to fail a few weeks ago. As I am driving the power steering notice comes on and I lose power steering in the middle of driving. I pull over, turn off the acr, and restart it and the power steering is back. Some days it doesn't happen at alla nd others it may happen every few miles. It has not been fixed. The small garage I took it to could not figure out what was wrong with and recommended we look into recalls. And then I found many complaints on this same problem and it costs anywhere from $600 to $110- to fix. I will not be spending that kind of money. And gm will not recall it.

2005 chevy Cobalt has a problem with its power steering. My car loses power steering without warning. If I turn the car off and back on the problem goes away for a while. I also have a problem with my ignition. The key gets stuck in the ignition when I turn the car off and is hard to get out.
There were no deaths, no accident, but there could have been if I was making a fast turn. And we shouldn't wait till someone gets injured or killed before this problem should be recalled. Driving along, making a turn on a quite street and power steering just shut down, I heard a warning beep at the same time I lost my power steering and quickly had to fight with the car to finish making my turn. The warning beep was when the words "power steering" appeared in the display where it should temp, and mileage. It happened at the same time as the warning beep. The whole electric steering column had to be replaced. Was also told, there was a technical bulletin about this problem, but no notification to owners that this could happen to you while driving.
I have a 2005 chevy Cobalt and at least once a day while driving (highway or city driving) my car loses its power steering. I can be on the highway or driving home from the store. There is no speed limit, no rhyme or reason. The only way I can fix it is to turn the car entirely off and restart it. I have on numerous occasions had such difficultly steering that I barely missed hitting other cars. Turning corners is nearly impossible!.
While driving the electronic power steering assist motor failed and lost all power steering in the vehicle. Cycling power to the motor (killing ignition and restarting car) brings it back for a few moments before it fails again. Entire steering column had to be replaced.
2005 chevy Cobalt - loses power steering. Dealership cannot diagnosis and neither can my mechanic. Teenage driver. Very unsafe to have happen to her while driving.
The incident date below was the fifth time this has occurred. First noticed traction control and power steering light coming on-the car "bucks" and power steering is lost-several times car will lose power and have to be restart. After restart warning lights will go away and power steering returns. Seems to come back to normal after restart, runs ok until the process starts again. The car was purchased may 08 and first incident was Aug 15 2008-took to dealer and they reset the computer, second and third time the car seemed ok until the 4th incident and returned to dealer again and reset again. I was told that the computer codes were showing u2105 and u2100 u2107 and car returned. This last incident (12-11-08) the car was doing the same thing and drove right to dealer to show service what the car was doing. They claimed the car is equipped with electric steering column and it disengages from the computer and the steering column needed to be replaced and a computer module. Gave them permission to correct this because I can't let my son drive a car knowing at anytime he will lose power steering. He has been lucky he was traveling at low speeds when this occurs. If he was on a highway and in front of a tractor trailer and lost power he might be killed because he would lose ps and stall. This is a safety-related defect in the vehicle equipment (electric power steering column) when at any time with no warning you can lose your steering, stall and/or buck. Upon further research into the 2005 Cobalt, I have found 805 complaints regarding the steering column and the problems of controlling the car when this happens. Upon further research the malibu is having the same issues with steering. Guess what kind of steering is in the malibu. . Read more...
Power steering warning light goes and on off. Sometimes lose power steering during driving. When car is turned off and re-started problem goes away.
2005 chevy Cobalt - 09/20/2008 - while driving straight at approx. 10 mph on a residential street, car chimed, dic displayed "power steering" and power steering was lost. With difficulty, pulled car over to the side of the street, put car in park, turned car off, and re-started car. On re-start, dash display was normal, power steering was normal. On 09/23/2008, while driving straight at approx. 30 mph on a busy road (2 lanes each direction), same thing happened (chime, "power steering" display, loss of power steering, difficulty steering the car); slowed to a stop on approach to a red light, put car in park, turned car off, re-started car, back to normal. On 09/26/2008 (today), while driving straight on a city street at approx. 20 mph, same thing happened (chime, "power steering" display, loss of power steering, difficulty steering the car), no place to pull over, had to turn left on a side street to park, very difficult to control the car while making the turn, parked, turned car off, re-started car, back to normal. I have an upcoming service appointment at my chevy dealership, but service department advises me there is no recall for this issue, and they will only be able to find/fix problem if it occurs while it is in their possession, and I am out of warranty (44,000 miles on odometer). I am now afraid to drive the car, but have no other way to get to work and back. I will not drive it on the highway. I did an internet search on 09/23/2008, and see complaint after complaint from Cobalt owners about this very same problem. Also see that there was a "special coverage adjustment" (dated 12/03/2007) for 2005 chevy malibus and 2005 pontiac g6s for what appears to be the same power steering problem (remedy for this was for dealer to replace the steering column assembly; special coverage was for 7 years or 70,000 miles). Driving a car that suddenly loses power steering on an on-going basis is not safe, why is there no recall for this problem for Cobalts?.
I have a 2005 chevy Cobalt LS and around 38,000 miles the power steering flashed in the dash and I lost all power steering in a parking garage. There is no warning that's its going to happen besides the flashing in the dash 3 secs before it goes. This happened everytime I drove over 20 miles at a time, and I go to school in syracuse so I drive the thruway everyday so it was extremely hard to drive with it. I had to get the whole steering column replaced because the power steering is electric. It all cost 675$ I was able to get almost all of the labor charges dropped after working and talking with a chevy dealership.
Around 50k miles my 2005 chevy Cobalt lost power steering intermittently on average around twice a day. It was only while in drive, never in reverse or park. Then around 60k-70k it would go out immediately after I put it in drive but never in park or reverse. Then around 80k it started happening intermittently while in reverse. I am at 100k and I am concerned it will go out more frequently while in reverse. I have had some "near misses" when it goes out while in a turn or backing up. I think this is a potentially fatal issue and also interferes with resale opportunities.
Power steering light comes on dash and car loses power steering immediately. Major safety concern while driving. It is happening often. Usually 1-2 times a month. I am not the only person who has this problem. Upon looking it up online and seeing that there's hundreds of other people with the same problem, it caused me to file this complaint. It obviously is a wide spread issue. I contacted gm through e-mail and they have yet to respond. It has been about 2 months. Also the key gets stuck into the ignition, I do not know if it is relevant to the steering issue but everyone who has the steering issue also has the key/ignition problems. When I experience power steering failure, I feel out of control of the vehicle. Luckily for me, it has not caused a crash, but I can certainly see how it could. I feel like gm should step up, take responsibility for this, and fix the problem instead of letting it be, and letting their customers drive unsafe vehicles. I feel unsafe.
My 2005 chevy Cobalt lost power steering today. I came here to research if there were any recalls or safety bulletins. I keep finding accidents from this problem and am now wondering how many people have to be killed before you do something about this. I do not see where someone lost life so I guess you don't care. You have all kinds of complaints about the same system but no service bulletins or recalls. W h y ??????.
