3 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/30/2018

"takata recall" on 3/30/18 I was involved in a wreck. I was traveling on a busy city street when the light turned red. I stopped and the person in front of me was driving a large SUV. When the light turned green and traffic began to move I started driving. Out of nowhere with no warning, the driver just stopped and my car ran into the back of the vehicle. We both stayed in our vehicles I called 911. Officers arrived and emergency services. Even though hardly any damage was done to the SUV, my car sustained a lot of damage to the hood and bumper of my car. The airbags didn't deploy. I thought my car was totaled by looking at it. I was able to have most of my car repaired out of pocket because I had liability only at the time. The passenger in front of me after giving information to the responders was able to drive away, I was not. I've also had another accident where the airbags didn't deploy in 2014. I am concerned that I might be in another accident that could be life-threatening and the airbags won't work. I contacted gm about my concerns regarding the airbags and nothing was done to have my airbags checked. I was able to have the switch changed when there was a recall for that. I hope by sharing my experience with you something can be done to have my airbags checked and give me a sense of security when driving my vehicle.

4 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

5 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/23/2018

My wife was involved in a crash in our 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt on 23 February 2018. Car lost power to power steering motor, abs brakes, and air bags did not deploy after hitting a tree due to loss of steering and braking ability. I drove the car the morning before the crash and noticed the gauges and speedometer fluctuating moving all around, power steering light flashing on dash, I pulled over and turned the car ignition off and restarted car it then went away. My wife then drove the car going to her work and she called me about 5 minutes after leaving our house saying she has lost control of the car with no power steering or brakes, she was scared and hysterical and said she had crashed under a tree with in 1 mile of our house. The air bags did not deploy upon impacting the tree. I went to help her, I missed seeing the car on the first pass by, because it was in a briar patch under a tree as you can see in the pictures and the amount of damage done. She is very lucky that she was not injured. This car has been in for recalls for power steering motor(2) and ignition switch (1). It was not raining the day of the crash, she crashed approximately 10:20 am. I pulled the car out of the briar patch and drove it back to our house. I feel that this crash was due to the car losing power to steering, braking and air bags. My wife said there was a on coming car, that she was trying to avoid hitting, when the car entered the grass on the right side of the road the soft ground pulled the car off the road into the field and came to a stop after hitting a briar patch and tree. It could have been much worse my wife or someone else could be dead because of the problems the Chevrolet Cobalt has had. I filed a claim with our insurance company with $500 deductible, so we will probably be without a car because of this accident because of defective problems with this car.

6 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

Signal showing airbag needs servicing goes on and off while driving. Headlights, low beam (both of them) just stopped working. New bulbs and new fuses are not the problem. Now, I can't even keep my high beams in "on" position. Only if I hold the switch. I've had this car for under 3 months. Driver's side door lock sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I have to unlock the door manually (sometimes). I find that odd. My largest problem is obviously headlights. I have 2 children and can't drive at night, even in an emergency.

7 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/28/2016

My vehicle has been turning off while I have been driving. This abrupt "turning off" started occurring even before the ignition switch was changed by gm but now it is becoming more frequent. Prior to the ignition switch being change, each time the car would turn off the airbag sensor would flash repeatedly. After the ignition switch was changed I notified the dealer that the airbag sensor remained lit, and they just told me that it was a faulty sensor and that it had nothing to do with what was fixed on the ignition. The dealer also told me that if I chose to have it fixed, it would be an out of pocket expense. I never took the car back to the dealer to have that repair. This month I was in a car accident on the interstate and the airbags did not deploy. Although th accident did occur because of the car turning off on me, I am concerned that the airbags did not deploy that day and that my car continues to turn off on me. It doesn't matter what speed the vehicle is going either, the vehicle turns itself off. It's has happened in normal traffic after attempting to cross and intersection, on the highway and even while making a turn. I really feel this could cause a major car accident if not repaired soon. I have taken my car to the shop to have it diagnosed but they cannot find what is wrong with the car. One mechanic said it was an electrical problem. Another mechanic said it could be the transmission. I keep getting conflicting diagnoses.

15 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/04/2015

My boyfriend and I were on our way home from chicago (on I-80/90) when we hit a bit of lake effect snow and ice. The snow caused our car to lose traction which in turn caused us to hit a guard rail head on while going roughly 50-55 mph. Our airbags did not go off even though we hit the guard rail head on. We ended up being perpendicular in the right hand lane and was hit by a semi truck on the passenger side door. Again, our air bags did not go off which would make for a total of 4 airbags that were affected. I was unaware of affected air bags - I only knew about my ignition switch which was fixed months prior to the accident. Unacceptable.

16 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/10/2014

Vehicle has service air bag light on, light goes off and on, has been doing this at all speeds, but never stays on for more than a minute. Car had this light on when I purchased this car from a Dodge dealer in Dec. 2011, and they said that they repaired it, but it was not reported in detail to gm warranty service, so they lied. Now car needs air bag repairs, not covered by any warranty, and it will cost over $900. 00, and car only has 88,464 miles on it. This was told to me by a Chevrolet dealer who is doing the ignition switch recall for my car. I don't have that kind of money, as I'm still making car loan payments for the next 4 years. I think this is awful, air bags and sensors should last longer than 88,464 miles. My 1997 Saturn never had air bag problems, and it ran until 297,336 miles. Awful, too expensive to repair!!!!!, no assistance with paying for airbag repair, and can't sell car unless it is repaired. The Dodge dealer who sold me the car should be held liable, as they did work to get the service air bag light off, when I purchased the car from them. They hid the information from me, when I purchased the car. Air bags do not need ongoing service.

18 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

The activating switch for the passenger-side air bag failed around 78,000 miles. This seat switch activates the passenger airbag safety system when an occupant sits down in the front passenger seat. I was told at the time we had the ignition switch recall repair done to the car that the only way to replace the broken seat switch was to replace the passenger seat cover. To do this requires an initial outlay of $150. 00 dollars for the part( the switch is woven into the seat fabric)plus labor to install(price unknown)at the dealership. Without regard to age, weight or gender any front seat passenger may believe they are protected upon reading the dashboard 'airbag' sign when sitting in the car. The panel-mounted indicator for that airbag is a lighted display which, in daylight, is hard to see without cupping your hand over the annunciator-or wait until nightfall , get somebody to sit in the seat, and then check out the dash light.

19 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

At approximately 7:47am cst on August 7th 2014, I was making a right hand turn when the engine and all electrical components died. I was able to restart the car and safely drive, with no check engine lights/other dash warnings, approximately half a mile back home. There was no warning on the dash (ie check engine light) before the massive failure occurred; it was instantly dead. This fits the characterization of the ignition switch failure in the affected gm models. I was one turn from merging on the freeway. Had this incident occurred a minute later, the potential for severe injury/loss of life was great. I have been waiting on a list since April to get the defected ignition switch repaired. I have called several times for updates, and have been told up to 800 people were ahead of me for repairs. When I reported this incident to gm via the ignition switch recall hotline, they suddenly found the parts needed to repair my car. This is suspect to me. They are also claiming that this incident was not ignition switch related, but the fact remains that this was a near-miss incident with potential catastrophic implications that fits all descriptions of ignition switch failures. I have followed the instructions by gm to drive with only the key in the ignition and to avoid bumpy roads, but this incidents has made me feel extremely unsafe to drive this car. Gm is not treating this defect in the ignition switch as seriously as it needs to, as the possibility for severe injury/loss of light is great. There is no warning that power will be lost. I do not feel safe driving this car knowing that gm knew about this defect for over a decade and is insisting that cars with the defect are safe to drive.

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

In June 2014 I returned my 2008 Cobalt to reliable Chevrolet in springfield, mo for the ignition switch recall. The" service air bag" light had been on for the past several months. I had contacted a Chevrolet dealer service department and inquired about my concerns. I was advised "there was no service air bag" procedures that were serviceable on the air bags. When I took my vehicle to the Chevrolet dealer to have the ignition recall performed, I specifically asked about the service air bag light and was advised there was no recall on air bags. I have seen recall information on the local news concerning a recall that included the air bag. 28 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

I am very disappointed in gm's handling of the February 10 and April 10, 2014 recalls of 2008 Chevrolet Cobalts. I am a 2008 Cobalt owner, and I still have not received a letter nor has my uncle who is the registered owner. I bought the vehicle used but do not feel that is an adequate excuse for not being notified of this recall. I was not able to order the designated parts for repair until 3 days ago, as the dealership I contacted in regards to the problem did not get back to me. I do not feel that this recall is a situation to make light of. People are dying from this deficiency in the vehicle, and I was never even informed of the possibility of my air bags not deploying. I do not feel safe driving my car and I do not feel secure knowing that without my taking the initiative to investigate this problem, I would never have known that my car had been recalled. I also am not satisfied with the listing on the official gm letter on the NHTSA website that all ignition switches will be replaced, when the posted recall on cars. Com from gm states a problem with the ignition cylinder as well. I also feel that my air bags, steering and entire electrical system should be tested and replaced if there is even the slightest chance that they have be ineffective. I lose power steering if my ignition switch fails, in addition to my air bags failing, further compromising my safety. I am very concerned about these defects on my vehicle, as I have no other form of transportation back and forth to work etc. , and the length of time it is taking for it to be repaired. The dealership that ordered the parts for me told me it would be 6 weeks before the parts arrived, at which point I could make my appointment which may mean additional waiting. I, as a consumer, feel slighted and certainly disregarded. I will not recommend any gm sedan of this nature to anyone.
