37 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/22/2014

The chevy Cobalt recall does not fix the kill switch problem. I just got this car back today. I attached a small wallet that holds only my license and bank card in it and the air bag light still goes on and off. Hence this is exactly what it did before it was replaced. I didn't have this problem with the same wallet attached in my chevy rental car. This car is not corrected. It is still a death trap. If you only leave the key in the ignition the air bag light stays off exactly what they said to do before it was changed.

38 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/18/2014

I recently acquired this vehicle, the prior owner put black tape over air bag defective message. I know that there was a recall in 2014, it states the owner was informed of the recall involving the ignition effecting the air bags. The listing codes not indicate whether the recall/ vehicle was ever serviced to correct the problem. I tend to think it was never done. I need to know how to determine, the incident describes the consequence: if the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Currently on my dash, the check airbag is displayed. Original recall from the NHTSA manufacturer's report date April 18, 2014 NHTSA action number n/a potential number of units affected 2,190,934 NHTSA campaign id number 14v047000 component electrical system:ignition:switch.

My wife and her mother were driving on a street in the city that we live in. This street does have a mild to moderate amount of traffic depending on the time of day. It is a two lane road that for the most part goes through the residential area of the city that we live in as well as the neighboring city. The speed limit predominately is 35 mph. At the time of the incident, my wife was traveling to the south in which the roadway proceeds down a short, mild downgrade in to a natural wash or stream bed and then back up an upgrade to the south side of town and the neighboring city. My wife was traveling downhill when suddenly she lost power to the vehicle and the steering locked up. The engine was still running but all the electrical components of the vehicle such as the gauges and the car stereo ceased to work. Due to the steering locking up and my wife being unable at the time to control the vehicle, she drifted in the opposite lane, bounced off a curb on that side of the road and then drifted back into the appropriate lane before coming to a stop. Fortunately for the safety and well-being of my wife and her mother, no other vehicle was in or approaching the opposite lane. When the vehicle came to a stop, the engine stalled when the key ignition was in the run position. My wife proceeded to switch the key in the off position and then proceeded to restart the vehicle. The vehicle then started up like normal. My wife proceeded to drive the vehicle to her original destination which was only a couple of miles away. She then notified me by cellphone in which we started the process of trying to get this issue resolved.

My daughter was involved in a vehicle accident in the 2006 chevy Cobalt that we purchased. The accident was severe enough to render the vehicle totaled. She was pulling out into a lane of traffic and a car hit her car in the front driver side corner doing about 50mph, since she was just pulling out her speed wasn't more then 15-20mph. The airbags never deployed even though the collision was on the front corner and was strong enough to shift the engine block and break the motor mount. We recently received the recall information pertaining to the engine switch and having bulky key chains and how jarring could cause the car to shut off and not deploy the airbags. Neither of the airbags, the drivers or the passengers, deployed and the car shut off.

61 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

One morning when I started my 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt with the 2lt trim package, the airbag readiness light came on and stayed on the whole time I was driving, and at the same time the passenger airbag status indicator off symbol was lit. The car had never been involved in an accident and the approximate millage on my car at this time was 50,577. There was a person setting in the passenger seat that weighed approximately 140 pounds, so the airbag should have been on. Ever since that day, every time I start my car the airbag readiness light and the passenger airbag off lite come on and stays on. I checked the connectors under the passenger seat and all were connected. I took my car, paid out of pocket to have diagnostic testing to get the error codes for this but no codes were shown. Recently I took it to the dealership for the ignition switch safety recall repaired. After reading Chevrolet Cobalt technical service bulletins about airbags, numerous complaints from other Cobalt owners about this exact problem, recalls that had the term airbags mentioned, I decided to tell my concern to the service employees and was told this wasn't covered, that I could pay for them to do testing on it. Seeing as I had already paid for the exact same testing before with no results as to what was wrong, I declined to have it done again. I contacted Chevrolet by email concerning this. They emailed me back asking for additional information. I replyed with that information and have never heard anything back from them. What do those of us who have safety concerns associated with the airbags need to do to get Chevrolet to acknoweledge that this is a problem that needs their attention seeing as this is a common problem with the Cobalts? seeing as Chevrolet has put out technical service bulletins concerning this exact problem proves they are aware of it but have yet to do anything about it.

63 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/05/2012

Vehicle's automatic door locks began to engage and disengage on their own, possibly locking the steering column as vehicle entered into a curve. Caused driver to loose control go into ditch, bounce out of ditch and log roll the vehicle. Air bags did not deploy. Door locks were still going up and down several hours later at the vehicle impound yard and was observed by the police officer and noted in his report. Additional. This problem is much bigger than beleived! I have a 2011 hhr and have had the ignition switch turn off when I have dropped the adjustable steering column to the down position while moving. I have a heavy keyring and when I brought it up to the dealership they told me the keyring was the problem. My other daughter's 05 impala had the same problem when she hit a bump.

64 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

The vehicle began having electrical problem a few years after purchase in 2008. The power windows became non operable, radio speakers stopped working, door locks don't unlock via power switch, ac/ heat issues (doesn't function properly), and wire harnesses near seat belt column (where belt meets floor) became severed from seat belt column movement. . . . This caused air bags to stop functioning.

65 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/01/2012

Hello. My 2010 chevy Cobalt has been plagued with service air bag issues for a long time. My concern the ignition switch is only a smoke screen compared to the air bag system. People need to know when the service air bag light is on, the air bags system will not deploy when needed. I have had it serviced a couple times and invested over $700. 00 to have it fixed and it is still broken. I was told they know about a faulty design with the main com wire that goes under the carpet and passenger seat to the air bag control box to break thus rendering the system fault. They replaced several parts in my steering wheel and it worked for a little while but came back. Now my cruise control is also broken along with the faulty air bag system.

69 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/13/2011

This submission is an addendum to the report that I submitted on Aug 15, 2011; reference number 10419491 with the attachments that include the police report, may statement and photos. I submitted my report two days after the accident. Now, after reading the news articles and the gm statements regarding the faulty ignition switch, it is apparent that what I thought was a steering malfunction (per the recalls I received and the statements made to me by gm representatives) was clearly the ignition switch. While driving down the freeway at 60 mph my dash lights turned on, I immediately lost steering control (I could not turn my steering wheel) and swerved had to the left crashing into the guard rail. The accident report shows my skid marks across three traffic lanes that clearly indicate that my abs system also was not working. My airbags did not deploy even though my front end was crushed and the car totaled. Nothing on my car worked because the ignition switch had turned off. My original report should indicate that my car suffered an ignition switch malfunction that caused the accident. I was belted in so after being released from the hospital emergency room (I was taken by ambulance from the crash site) I was diagnosed with a cervical sprain, multiple cuts and bruises, sprained ankle and knee. My head impacted the windshield even though I had my seat belt on.

70 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/13/2011

The 05 Cobalt, regularly serviced by the dealer where it was bought crashed after going out of control when the ignition switched off on the interstate at 60 mph. The steering locked, the abs did not function, when it crashed into the guard rail the air bags did not deploy. The only warning was the dash warning lights all lighting up and the alarm sounds. The one second or so did not allow any chance to the driver to react before the crash. After the accident, when the dealer was contacted, we were advised to contact the gm person. The gm person was friendly and nice, but very firm in stating that we needed to have proof that the car failed, rather the driver at the wheel. The cars computer was not analyzed because the wrecking yard demanded over $700 to tow the car out of the wrecking yard so any investigator could look over the car. Gm told us that it was our problem to pay the bill to allow their investigator to look at the car. We did not have the money. After reading numerous comments on the NHTSA site and blogs, people never heard a word from gm after they retrieved the computer. The salient point is that many of the over a thousand complaints about the Cobalt and other similar gm cars that identified the power steering as the problem that caused a crash are wrong. The power steering was not the cause of the crash. The problem was that the ignition switch turned off. The gm recalls about the power steering problem hide the fact that the ignition switches were turning off while the car was moving down the road. We know that the lack of power assist only affect the car at a stop or very slow speeds. Experienced drivers do not crash their car into guard rails, ditches, trees or other car simply because the power assist fails. That story is what gm has been selling in the past few years.
