36 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

The fuel lines on this 2008 Cobalt have rusted out and leaving a visible fuel leak puddle after parking. The leak occurs in front of the driver side rear wheel. This area has a heat shield over the fuel line underneath which traps moisture and road salt. This leak has caused me to park my vehicle outside as a safety precaution and not drive it. The leak is near the exhaust which is a large safety risk in my opinion. I am taking to the dealer to have them confirm and quote out repair cost.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/13/2022

Wiring harness is located too close to the human under the driver's seat. Exposes the driver to electrical frequencies that could be avoided if the wire harness was a further distance away from the human. Also, the the fuel line rusted through after 9 years about 9 inches away from the rear axle where the metal tape ends around the fuel line. The metal tape seems to allow more moisture to become trapped around the fuel line; which promotes rust and a leak where the metal tap ends. After the metal tape, the fuel line is in good condition on this specific vehicle. The fuel leak is about 0. 5 inches wide and a lot of gasoline drips / leaks after the car is started. The rust particles are located after the fuel filter; which may promote the rust particles to reach the engine via the rusted fuel line. The car has trouble starting (a delay) and needs to have the key turned twice due to the leak. The leak is very close to the muffler, so it seems like it would be at risk of catching on fire if the muffler was hot enough or if it were traveling on a long trip or going up or down a steep hill. The vehicle has been inspected by police. There were no warning lamps or lights.

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/02/2022

Strong fuel smell and gas on the ground (creating a fire hazard). No warning messages were displayed. Puddling of the fuel is just in front of the left rear tire. Odor was detected first; then one week later the puddle occurred. Car has been repaired by gm service; fuel and evap lines replaced (p/n 25999914 and 15934416). Symptom and repair seem identical to htsa bulletin 09226c (published July 2015).

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/15/2022

I have to replace my fuel lines due to them rusting out over the left rear wheel well. I noticed a distinct smell of gas for a couple of rides to or from work. After a couple of rides, the smell was very strong and I happened to notice the gas dripping down under the car upon inspection. It was taken to a auto repair shop where I was told that this was a serious hazard and the gas lines would have to be replaced costing me $650. The mechanic said that the lines has rusted causing the leak. He also mentioned that this was a common problem with the 2008 chevy Cobalt.

There is gas puddling around the driver rear tire. . Read more...

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/13/2022

I noticed the smell of fuel originating from the near the left rear well a few days ago (~1/1/2022). I took my car to a mechanic who confirmed fuel leaking out from a line located near the left rear well. The mechanic claims the leaks are caused by corroding metal fuel lines and was due to poor engineering/ design of the car. The gas line is rusted and leaking, there is a strong odor of gasoline at the rear drivers side tire of my car and I can feel/ see the fuel leaking. I have been driving my 4 month old son around in that car for months and had no idea fuel was leaking and I was putting both of our safety at risk! I called my local chevy dealership about fixing it and they said it will be at least $1300 to repair the leak and more if the gas tank needs to be replaced. I am taking the car to the dealership on 1/18/2022. There were no signs of anything wrong besides the strong smell of gas.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/11/2022

I have noticed when car is parked in garage that there is a gas odor present in the garage. It appears the gas odor is the strongest around the driver side, rear wheel. I do not yet see any severe drips anywhere but it is enough to cause concern about parking the car in a closed up garage. Especially in winter with a heater running. . . I have not yet brought it into a dealer to have it checked. This car is located in a midwest climate where salt is used on roads which would cause possible issues with corrosion.

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/22/2021

Around Dec. 22, 2021, I started smelling gas outside and inside of my car (particularly the right back seat near the gas tank). I took it to a local mechanic and he urged me to take it to the dealership for service and to not drive the car a lot because it could be dangerous. He said it was the gas tank pump and that there was a recall that I should look into. I took my car to a local dealership for service and upon inspection, they removed and replaced the fuel pump and plastic lines - they confirmed there was an issue with the gas pumps.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/25/2021

Strong smell of gas when driving, also strong smell of gas around car in general. Underneath the car you can see gas pouring from fuel tank, looks like it’s coming from top of gas tank. Whenever I park in a parking space, in my driveway or park for any period of time I always leave a puddle of gas. I just started my car and looked underneath at gas tank, there is a steady stream of fuel coming from somewhere on gas tank.

58 Other Fuel System problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/19/2021

Vehicle leaks fuel from the fuel line underneath the vehicle near the left rear wheel well adjacent to the exhaust pipe and muffler in a manner in accordance with currently open usdot/NHTSA investigation (pe 20-011). A substantial puddling of fuel occurs on the ground from fuel dripping through the subframe. This is currently still happening and is available for inspection. Severe risk of fire is apparent, a highly volatile fuel in substantial amount is leaking/exposed to a substantial heat source, and could be ignited. Problem can be reproduced. Situation has been brought to the attention of two local gm dealerships, and a complaint filed with gm corporation (case# 9-7117335295). Prior to this finding, a substantial fuel odor was present in the cabin.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/31/2021

Last year or so, even before than, I noticed suddle fuel odor smell & noticed few drops by left rear wheel area. . . It has progressingly gotten worse and now puddles and smells of fuel constantly. . . All which I traced back to fuel lines by rear exhaust heat shield area where it's very rusty, inline elsewhere around car area. . . Seems to be bad design and or manufacturing issue. . . Also very common I noticed with Cobalt Saturn pontiac models sharing same design & platform. . Very dangerous and needs to be corrected by gm!.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/28/2021

My headlight an blinker quit working new bulbs an all new wiring it it still will not work my trunk button also just stopped working an the fuse is not blown. I even replaced it just to make sure still nothing. Door panel clips won’t stay in bought new ones same thing so now my handle is coming apart an my door doesn’t want to shut bc it thinks I’m still holding the handle. . Fuel everytime I get gas I have to crank my car a few times and press on the gas before I can get it to go otherwise it just dies on me I’ve had it looked at they said it was something about how my car does not know when to stop releasing air I think. My blinkers don’t turn off unless I do it manually. The seals on my door is no good anytime it rains it’s coming inside of my car an since the door panel won’t stay on it’s coming straight into my car.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/25/2021

My car has a fuel leak. I looked up to see if there was a recall and there was but not for my VIN. This is a serious and dangerous issue and one I think Chevrolet needs to fix. Why are some cars covered and others not with the same issue.

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/18/2021

I began noticing a slight drop in fuel mileage at first. Started smelling fuel while parked and only getting 200 miles to a tank. Noticed the supply and return fuel lines where damp. Dropped the tank and the fuel lines at the pump were cracked a little. I temporarily fixed thos with jb weld but dont expect it to last.

69 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/05/2021

Began smelling gas while I was driving, took to mechanic to get checked. Fuel line was cracked at the fuel pump. Had to replace whole assembly.

70 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/29/2021

The fuel system has developed a small leak, for now near the left rear tire. I cannot pinpoint the exact location of the leak due to the heat shielding around the lines. My concern is the proximity of the fuel leak to the exhaust system and potential fire hazard. A dealer has not looked at my car, however I have performed maintenance on enough vehicles and aircraft to know when there is a fuel leak. There are no warning lights associated for the leak thus far, there is a tendency for the the vehicle to need to prime itself by cranking in the morning or in cold temperatures.
