45 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/18/2008

I experienced the steering column on my 1999 Corvette lock up while I was driving it. I was only in a restaurant parking lot and was able to stop and call for help. I called my local repair facility and they had informed me that I must have my car towed in for the necessary repairs. Upon arriving at the repair facility, they informed me that a recall had been issued to remedy this issue. They check my vehicle identification number and quickly realized that the recall had already been performed on my car. They had to replace the parts once again and I was charged almost $700 for the repair. I asked why I needed to pay for the recall and they said I was paying for it because the recall had already been performed. I researched the exact recall pertaining to this particular incident (04v0600000) and discovered something that should not have been able to happen if the recall was performed as intended. The vehicle was supposed to be reconfigured as to disable it from being driven while the steering column was locked up. On the models equipped with an automatic transmission, the lock was removed from the steering column and a lock was installed on the shifter so it could not be removed from the park position. This was also intended to keep the anti-theft feature. On models equipped with manual transmissions, the lock on the steering column could not be removed because this was the only anti-theft device. Instead the fuel to the engine was supposed to be interrupted if the steering column locked up. On my vehicle, I was able to drive my car into a parking spot at the restaurant. I was not able to steer the vehicle because of the steering column being locked up. I called the general motors reimbursement department and told them what happened and they said my claim was denied because the vehicle was out of warranty. From what I understand, mileage or warranty does not apply to safety recalls. Please advise.

52 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 02/21/2008

Service bulletin 05081 just performed on my Corvette to fix a steering column lock problem. After work performed I get a message to remove key and wait 10 sec. Tgm completed a service bulletin on my car that leaves me with a car that stalls immediately after starting. In the many years I owned the car I had only gotten the message once, which related to the steering column lock. Now since the service bulletin was done to fix the problem I get the message every other time I start the car. I feel as though the car is unsafe to drive I have already had one occasion where I did not see the info message. I proceeded to pull out of a parking space only to have the car stall and almost get hit by a truck. Fortunately the truck was able to stop before a collision occurred. The truck driver was not very patient and proceeded to give me a few choice words while I had to go through the famous 10 second drill 2 times before I could get the car to run. What I really expect is a service bulletin that fixes a problem not causes one I now have an unsafe car. My wife refuses to drive it for fear it will stall when moving from a parked position into traffic. This needs to be addressed immediately. The car has stalled 3 times in the last week! very unsafe.

54 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/12/2007

Recall on column lock system on gm/chevy Corvette was performed on 2-14-05 & not done properly. The solution is to disable this anti-theft system as it can lock-up on you without warning while driving. On my Corvette this was performed but not disabled, my car locked up in my garage 11/07. . . Lucky me! so for well over 2 years I was driving a car that was supposed to be fixed putting my life as well as my family members in danger. Now gm wants me to eat the cost of repairs because of the time & miles since. I'm talking about $371. 00, not much really but it's the principle. They should be more worried that I'll sue for negligence!.

55 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/30/2007

Steering column lock issue - had latest 2006 recall work performed by dealer. Did not solve problem, same error code reads on dash and car shuts itself off when try to move it more than 2 mph. Dealer says gm is not covering it. Want to charge me to replace same part they put in as a part of the recall!!! also, we had to pay for the flat bed tow for this same problem twice now! we have had recall work done 4 times on this same problem! now they say its not covered? how can they get away with this? they are dragging the Corvette name into the dirt!.

57 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette

58 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/04/2007

Gm states that the recall on my 1997 Corvette has previously been resolved, when I prior had no acknowledgment of the recall. After persistently giving them the recall number they finally admitted to the recall applying to my vehicle, but stated that the recall had been performed to specifications, when in fact all they did was reset the computer for a temporary fix. They said that the recall was closed and all cost incurred would be my out of pocket expense. I really feel that a recall for this severe of an occurrence should stay open until the problem is completely remedied. This is a very dangerous faulty part that the government should require an open recall on.

59 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/24/2007

As with many other c-5 Corvette owners I have had an experience concerning my steering column to lock up and thus make it impossible to drive the car. I had received a bulletin about this issue a couple of years ago and even though I had not yet had the issue I took the car in and had the supposed required fix. However a few days ago while backing out of my drive way the column locked up and no matter what I did I could not get it to unlock. I called the dealer about the issue and had to have the car towed in upon their recommendation, due to the fact that even if I got it unlocked it could potentially lock up again even while I was driving down the road. It has become evident to me at this point after researching this issue online as well as referring back to my original bulletin that this is without a doubt a Chevrolet's manufacturing defect. However when I called Chevrolet they basically said tough cookies and really did not give a you know what. The dealers fix as they informed me comes straight from general motors is to just delete the locking mechanisms thus rendering part of the anti-theft system mute. I have talked with many Corvette specialists about this situation and it definitely is a problem, no matter what Chevrolet tries to say. And the fact that their fix is to bypass the system instead of fixing the parts involved pretty much tells you that they have a problem. Even with all this they are going to make me pay for this issue. I have contacted an attorney and am looking at all my options, however at this point I have no choice but to shell out the 450 to 650 bucks it is going to cost me to fix gm's screw up.

60 Steering Anti-theft Device problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/13/2007

Steering column locked up for the 3rd time since I've had the car (5 mos). On two ocassions it eventually released on its own. The gm recall bulletin 04006c, electronic column lock, was refused by bobby murray Chevrolet in raleigh, nc, unless I agreed to pay $90/hr for diagnostics. They state I have already had a recall performed (an older recall, not 04006c according to the vis service date), so there's nothing they can do without payment. I contacted gm and they disagree with the dealership's assesment, and to this date have not responded to gm's inquiries. It appears to me to be all about the money and that they could care less about the safety issues involved. According to NHTSA and gm, the vehicle should not have been released back to me without the recall performed. At no cost!.
