1 Driveshaft problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 09/18/2020

When accelerating the car begins to shake and shimmy noticeably beginning around 35 or 40 mph. This shaking is felt in the seat as well as the steering wheel. The vibration continues until the acceleration is halted. This shaking feels like it is coming from the transmission or drive shaft. It seems to be getting worse too. Currently 3650 miles on the car. Serpentini chevy in westlake, OH is also aware of the problem and showed me a letter that gm sent to the dealers acknowledging the issue on 9/9/20 but no fix is available. It feels unsafe.

3 Driveshaft problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/02/2015

My daughter was driving home from a trip when she pulled over to get gas. The driveshaft snapped in half just as she was pulling into the gas station. There was no warning, no sound before then. She had no control of her car. No steering, nothing. She had just pulled off the highway, so thank god it did not happen when she was on the highway going 70 mph or she would be dead. Cost to have towed and fixed over $1000. Also prior to this incident, has had several issues with front end. Had to replace the bearings, front axle, tie rods 3 times in the last 2 years due to something wrong with this vehicle and the way it drives or is made. Constant "rubbing, grinding" noise when you turn tires. Gas fumes are very strong in the car, always have been, and repair shops cannot find any leaks. She cannot sell it, as it is worth very little due to all these defects and no recalls, and she is still making payments on this car for the next 4 years. Stuck with a very dangerous lemon.

5 Driveshaft problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

I was driving and the car started shaking and vibrating very bad. I called and was told it could be my tires if they were not all about the same tread. I had replaced two tires a couple months prior so I told my husband to pull my rear tires to see if it helped. As soon as he put the spare on the passenger rear side the vibrating stopped. So we took the car in and had 2 more tires put on. That did not stop the vibration. I could only drive on a spare home. So I took it to dealership and it needed a rear drive shaft!!!.

6 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/12/2014

The center drive shaft bearing has failed for the second time. Once at 50,000 mile and now at 100,000 miles. Costly to replace 800 dollars. This bearing could cause a severe accident an injury if not know why the vehicle is vibrating. Chevy says not thier problem for parts to wear out.

7 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 10/14/2013

My center bearings were replaced about 3yrs ago thought it was a fluke though I had heard from many people that this was an ongoing problem. Clunking began under my car again so I knew what it was. Took it to the mechanic and the center bearings were broke again and the bearings and the back of the driveshaft also. The rear u joint was also broken. This is ridiculous as well as dangerous. I take good care of my car no running over logs in the woods or things of that nature how can this keep happening unless it is a defect or flaw in design. This time with the clunking my anti lock brakes were going off every time I stopped too. Mechanic had a hard time getting the parts to replace apparently everyone needs them but chevy sees no problem with this.

8 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

Carrier bearing on 2005 Equinox totally gone. Mechanic discovered that the driveshaft is bent which most likely caused the carrier bearing to wear down. Mechanic said it is very difficult to bend the driveshaft unless the vehicle is in a major accident. I am the original owner of vehicle and it has never been in an accident. I have heard a thumping noise in the rear of vehicle when slowing down for the past 6 yrs. Several shops and dealership were unable to diagnose the issue.

9 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/18/2013

I heard a rattling coming from under the car, so I took it my repair shop. He said it was a broken carrier bearing, and ordered the part. Said it would be $550 for parts and labor. The next day he called and said he wouldn't be able to replace just the one part, but that the entire drive shaft might have to be replaced, for around $1200. Very consistent with other owners' issue.

10 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 25 mph, the driveshaft caused the vehicle to stall. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic who stated the drive-shaft needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer to order a new driveshaft and was advised the part would be available in two to three months. The contact stated the vehicle was unsafe to drive and would not be repaired until the part was available. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 59,000.

11 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/18/2011

The center barring on the drive shaft wore out back in April 2011 at 83,000 miles. It was replaced by a GMC dealership. The same component wore out again and required replacing in September 2011.

12 Driveshaft problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

I brought my 2006 chevy Equinox in for a oil change on 1/4/11 and was told that my carrier bearing on the drive shaft was completely shot. I was informed to bring it to a mechanic right away otherwise I will lose my drive shaft. I brought my car immediately to the shop and was told that the part had to be ordered from gm and the part was around $500-$600. I contacted gm because if I was driving on the highway and the drive shaft went my car could have flipped and put me and others in danger. I was told by gm that they would not help with the costs of the bearing. When the bearing goes, which I'm told should have never gone, the car should vibrate badly or make noises which even the mechanic noted that no signs were given. If I had not brought my car in for a oil change I would have never known about this problem. I drive myself along with a disabled daughter and 2 year old grandson in this car and I have put all of us at risk even other drivers. This had to be a defective bearing that gm refuses to take care of. I feel that they didn't care about the safety of myself and other drivers on the road. Now I have to wait for this expensive part and then have it repaired. Thank god for the oil change because that is what I feel saved my life and others.

13 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/26/2010

The drive shaft failed which greatly reduced power to the wheels. The car became less unresponsive on the road (replacement not covered by dealer warranty) and could not move through minimum snow amounts going up hills on roadways. Vehicle is used for commuting to work (35 miles/day) on paved roads.

14 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

Not sure of exact first date clunking sounds under car took it in and the bearings that hold the drive shaft were broken. Mechanic said never saw something like that on a car without any other damage and that when he checked with local dealer was told that it was happening a lot. I reported to chevy also and yet they said there were no problems.

15 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

My Equinox was taken to dealer who informed me that the drive shaft was being held in place by one rusty piece of metal. He told me that if I were to hit a bump it would dislodge and would cause a serious accident and harm to car. Not good news for a mother. He is replacing this part.

16 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

The center bearing on my driveshaft broke. I bought the car used but in good condition. I did not hit anything with my vehicle to cause the bearing to break. I simply made a turn and that is when I noticed the noise and that it was driving horribly. As I traveled a few more feet down the road it just got worse. I took it into a chevy dealer and I am currently awaiting on repair.

17 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

2005 chevy Equinox drive shaft bearing wore down, vehicle never shook. There was a dragging noise I took it to the mechanic, he drove it, it ran smooth, he looked underneath and was able to move it 6 inches in all directions. Now have to replace the whole drive shaft.

18 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 09/21/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Equinox. He stated that the front wheel bearings were replaced. He heard a peculiar noise in the vehicle after the wheel bearings were replaced. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician concluded that the struts needed to be replaced. The part was on back order and no repairs were made. The failure mileage was 57,000. The current mileage was 67,000. Updated 11/12/09 the wheel bearing and driveshaft were replaced as well. Updated 11/16/09.

19 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

I own a 2005 chevy Equinox: the car started shaking while my daughter was driving. See stop at a near by service station to have it looked at. It was determined to be the center support carrier bearing, which holds the driveshaft in place. We contacted several chevy dealers for the part and were informed that this particular carrier bearing is out of stock, on back order and none were available in the country. They put us on a list to have on ordered. I was told not to expect it until September or October. This car is now immobilized. Apparently, there are several chevy Equinoxs with the same problem. This appears to be a serious safety concern, which needs to be recalled. I would like to see a recall put into effect immediately. Thank you for your help.

20 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/24/2009

My 2005 Chevrolet Equinox needs a new drive shaft carrier bearing. The Chevrolet dealership which is to perform the repair stated that this bearing is on national back order and could take between 3 weeks to 3 months for a replacement bearing. The dealership, the extended warranty company and gm will not authorize a loaner car. My understanding is that this bearing is used on many types of gm vehicles and there was a manufacturing defect which lead to the part shortage. My concern is that someone will not realize that damage to the drive shaft is occurring possibly creating a serious safety issue at higher speeds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

21 Driveshaft problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

I have a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox with 41,000 miles on it. At about 50 mph I felt a vibration. A mechanic then inspected the vehicle and stated that I needed a carrier bearing for the driveshaft, and that they see this problem frequently. When I approached the dealer to secure the replacement part, I was told that there was currently at least a three month wait for the part, and that it was not advisable to drive the vehicle for safety reasons. I was then told that there were others waiting for the part as there is a nationwide shortage. Calls to other dealers resulted in the same outcome, there were many customers waiting for this part and were unable to drive their vehicle in the meanwhile. The parts are on order, but it is clearly apparent that there is a defect in this part, as it should not need replacement so often and in low mileage vehicles.

22 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/02/2009

My 2005 chevy Equinox began shaking when driving greater than 50 mph. The repair shop found it was the drive shaft. The carrier bearing was detached and needed replaced. I am still waiting for this part to arrive so that my car can be repaired. How this is not a recall is beyond me. I researched and found greater than 15-20 complaints on line stating the same thing for their 2005 Equinox. Please help me. I am getting no where with chevy and they don't want to cover the part either.

23 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/08/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the driveshaft bearings failed and the vehicle cannot be driven. The dealer stated that the parts for the repair were on a national back order and they did not know when they would arrive. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 34,000.

24 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/13/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle independently steered to the extreme right. The failure caused the contact to drive through a ditch, across traffic, and through another ditch. The contact had no control of the vehicle, but did not crash the vehicle. The failure occurred twice in one day. The contact also stated that the key became stuck in the ignition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and the ignition and middle drive shaft carrier bearing were replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

25 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The carrier bearing is faulty on 2005 Equinoxes. Our mechanic told us this is a huge problem because it could cause the car to flip over. The major issue is that to repair the carrier bearing, they have to remove and replace the drive shaft. This has to be sent to Chevrolet, and since it can only be done by them, they have a strong arm on the price. ($1200) it is evident that this is a manufacturing defect because when I began to google 'drive shaft chevy', it gave me 2005 Equinox as a suggestion. The year was specific in the problem.

26 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

At approx 130k miles the driveshaft failed. Cost to repair $800.
