Chevrolet Express owners have reported 8 problems related to wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Electric window/mirror control panel affixed to the interior of the driver's side door. Electrical thermal event causing smoke and physical damage to the interior side of the door and electrical control cluster and wiring. Vehicle was in use but was not in motion and off roadway. Control panel aftermarket installation prior to purchase. No previous maintenance/repair work performed on door or door control panel. Prior to the event, rain water was observed dripping on to the control panel from the roof which overhangs the door when the door was in the open position. We've experienced with other similar make/model school buses electrical shorts in the driver's side door control panel, which did not result in a 'thermal event" nor fire as experienced on 3/27/18, but did require repairs.

Van is used in a municipal parks and recreation department for maintenance duties. Operator started vehicle at beginning of day to warm up. Operator left the vehicle. Operator returned approximately five minutes later and saw smoke coming from inside the passenger area. Operator called 911 and retrieved a dry powder extinguisher. Operator saw flames coming from an area in the rear of the driver's seat. Operator turned off ignition and used extinguisher on the fire, putting it out. Investigation shows area of origin to inside the driver?s side seat belt channel. Plastic molding covers this channel. A wiring harness is located in this channel. Heaviest burn of the harness is directly at the connection of the harness to the driver?s side seat belt mechanism located at the floor. Fire partially consumed harness and plastic molding. There are pictures of the damage and harness. Harness was cut back to clean wiring on both sides of damaged section and is available for inspection.
