1 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

My 2006 Hhr lost power steering. The light came on and it took all I had to steer it. Everytime I cut it all off and crank it back up the light will go off and I can drive it for about a minute to 5 minutes usually in the light saying power steering will come on and the steering issue will occur again. I love my Hhr and this is my first Chevrolet product but I really think there should be a recall due to the fact that after much much research I have found that the Hhr as well as other Chevrolet vehicles have hundreds to thousands of people with the same exact complaint. The power steering light would come on and they would lose all power steering. This should not be a cost that us who have purchased and put our trust of safety into Chevrolet to have to bare. This can be extremely dangerous and can actually lead to vehicle fatalities due to the power steering going out. Chevrolet should be responsible for the repairs of the power steering due to it being a known fact based on very much research and complaints from so many owners. This fact shows and proves that it is the fault of the way the car was designed or built or faulty parts used by Chevrolet/gm. Please consider the danger that this fault can cause to owners and do a recall to have these issues repaired so that it doesn't end up causing more damage or taking a life because someone loses control of there Chevrolet due to faulty parts. Thank you, melissa from halifax virginia.

2 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2016

We keep hearing a ding, ding, ding, and the instrument cluster reads out power steering as we lose our power steering and it becomes very difficult to turn the wheels. This keeps happening every so many days and I have changed the 60 amp fuse. But it seems that if I pull over and shut off the car and restart it the power steering works once again. It is very frustrating and dangerous in traffic. I called our mechanic and he said he will not work on electronic steering systems. That doesn't give me much comfort as it appears I would have to go to the dealer and guess it might be a big deal and very expensive. But other than that, we have been very happy with our car these last 10 years.

3 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2016

While driving this vehicle, the power steering light flashes on dash board and I lose all the function of the power steering. It has now happened 4 separate times in two weeks, the last when I was turning a corner and nearly hit a car on the side of the road because I could not steer the vehicle. I have a safety recall letter from general motors stating that I had to pay out of pocket to fix and then they would determine if it fell under there recall. When the letter states to bring it to the dealership should the power steering light ever comes on the dash panel, which it has done know 4 times when the power steering failed. I could been killed if I had been going faster or killed some one. This is an issue with the gm faulty mechanics. First it was the ignition having to give my vehicle up for nearly 6 weeks to have it fixed. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by general motors and paid for by general motors, not the consumer. What is it going to take, another death because of the mistakes. Even after they notified me that is a safety issue via letter, but I first pay out of pocket and then determine if they will reimburse me for it. The first time I was in downtown la going to work and once again when I turned left while driving, the second on the 405 in rush hour traffic, just as I was accelerating and changing lanes, the light flashed on the dash board (power steering) and I lost all power steering capability. The third was the week of February 15, 2016. Turning left again and the fourth time just yesterday again when I turned left.

4 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2015

Gm says drivers will instantly know if the electric power steering system fails because a chime and dashboard message will appear. The car can be steered without power assist, but it can require a lot more muscle to turn the wheel, especially at low speeds. Because of the difficulty, the car could be more susceptible to a crash. Our vehicle was in motion on a city street when suddenly, we lost all power steering. Other makes and models with the same equipment has been recalled already. When shutting off the vehicle and restarting, the power steering is restored briefly and will fail again while driving.

5 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2015

6 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

The first time this happen I was on the interstate with my wife and kid in the car. The road curved to the right and as I was going around it, I lost power steering. Luckily I was able to use force and maintain control around the corner. If my wife was driving she might not have been able to because it took everything I had to turn the wheel and get around the corner. Since then it has happened almost everyday, sometimes a few times a day. When this happens I get a dashboard message that says "power steering". My wife will not drive the car unless its just a quick trip to the store, and we refuse to put our son in that car. This is a very dangerous problem and I don't know how this has not been recalled yet.

7 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

We were on vacation at ft. Myers, FL, on the highway, going 70 mph and the ding-ding-ding sound went off and we lost power steering. If I would have been driving I would have crashed as I have weak arms from a neck injury. My husband was able to steer it without the power steering as he is strong. The steering would come back on then go back off erratically. We got the car back home to mississippi and put it in a garage on Monday, 23 June 2014 at 9:30. I missed work to do that and am presently still waiting on turan foley to get the power steering unit to my mechanic who ordered it Tuesday 24 June 2014. Today is 27 June 2014. This was a very dangerous situation. We had been notified that our ignition switch must be replaced and have been waiting 3 months on the part. I called turan foley and spoke with the parts lady about the power steering to see if I could get a car in the waiting time. She said no as the 2006 power steering for Hhr's has not been recalled. I inquired about the ignition switch I've been waiting 3 months for and she looked in her records and said she'd notified us by letter and phone 3 June 2014 the part was in. She did not send us a letter or notify me or my husband by phone. There is no record whatsoever that we were notified. We would have fixed it before vacation as we've been very concerned about this. Gm has some very dangerous parts of the car malfunctioning-in my case my power steering and possible ignition switch defects. I will have to pay my mechanic $310. 00 for the power steering. I am very unhappy with the gm product, my Hhr 2006 model. Gm has done a great disservice to their loyal customers. I used to be one.

9 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

I was driving my car and all of a sudden the dash board made a tone, it said "power steering" on the instrument panel and I lost all power steering. It was extremely difficult to turn the car and after getting it stopped, I turned the ignition off, sitting there for a few minutes I restarted the car and their was no issues until I backed out, then it did it again. I ended up sitting their for a while longer (aprox 15 minutes) and restarted the car again, backed out of the parking place and was able to drive off with no problem's. Since then I have not had another incident with the power steering. I notified Chevrolet the next day and they said my car wasn't in the recall so, they were not going to do anything to fix it.

10 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2014

I was driving home from work and stopped at a drive thru coffee shop. After receiving my order and drove off, I lost my power steering. My power steering light came on and I continued driving home. Thankfully, I only live a couple of miles away, though driving home was difficult. While turning on one street, I almost hit a car, as it was very difficult making a turn. I took my car to the dealership and they have to replace the power steering motor which will cost me 312. 00 dollars. I am upset that the manufacturer will not admit to the faulty motor, as I have read many complaints dealing with the same issue. Please look into this, I am concerned that this could cause an accident if not addressed.

11 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2014

Since February 2014, the vehicle loses power steering during every active operation. I have contacted Chevrolet regarding this problem and was informed that based on my VIN, the recall did not apply. I specifically in formed them that this wasn't just about the recall announcement, but that I was actively experiencing power steering failure during every operation, but I was emphatically informed by the recall representative that the recall did not apply to my car and that is was merely coincidental that my 2006 Hhr is having power steering failure and was not related in any way to the recall!.

12 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

Wife was driving the car, the power steering warning light came on and she lost power steering. She got home, called the dealer and asked about recalls and was informed the 2006 cobalt (mechanically and equipment wise the same car with a different skin) was recalled but not the Hhr. I took the car to firestone and the steering worked fine. They checked out the steering and could find nothing wrong but indicated the Hhr has been recalled for this in canada but not in the us and that the repair is quite expensive. Is the government protecting their investment in gm by not issuing a recall? please explain this situation or recall the twin of the cobalt.

13 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2013

While driving and in traffic lost power steering. Had to pull over, shut off car and restart t. This has happened numerous times and is to the point we can not drive the car.

14 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2013

I was backing out of my driveway when the vehicle lost power steering, causing me to nearly hit my mailbox. The information screen on the speedometer said power steering and my service engine light came on.

15 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

The vehicle lost power steering control. A chime sounded and a message appeared on the instrument panel. The power steering cuts out regularly since, every time the vehicle is driven. I have contacted gm numerous times, they insist that my vehicle is not included in the recent power steering recalls even though it uses the same exact power steering motor as the vehicles that are included (my local Chevrolet dealer has verified this and has contacted gm on my behalf too). I am frustrated and angry that gm is still neglecting to address this safety issue.

16 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

I was on the interstate travelling at approx 60 mph when I heard a ding-ding sound and I looked at my display panel below the speedometer and it said power steering and I realized that I had lost my power steering on my Hhr. . . Drove home thinking it was low on power steering fluid, I unloaded groceries and went up to my local advance auto. . Only to find the car had reset its power steering and all seemed fine. Purchased the ps fluid only to find it did not use ps fluid it is all electrical. It continued on and off intermittently until yesterday (April 7) when the ps alert came on and now stays on. . . I have no power steering which has caused me to just about hit parked cars. . . Turning a curve on my way to work this morning I just about lost control of the vehicle!! this is a very dangerous situation. Chevrolet seemingly knows about this issue on the Hhrs. . . A recall on the vehicles are needed immediately to correct this as the potential for a deadly crash is very high. I do not feel safe in my vechicle any more. . Why were the same parts recalled on other chevy models and not the Hhr?? I simply do not have the necessary funds available to me to fix this issue. . The responsibilty I think lies with the manufacturer as it is their part that is failing on these vehicles. .

17 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2013

I was driving on expressway in slow lane, power steering light came on on the dash and I instantly lost power steering. I stopped at next exit, turned off car called husband he said to take it home. I started car, it was fine, no warning on dash, drove fine. I drove a few hundred feet, lost power steering. This went on six times, with me stopping turning off car and restarting before I could get home. I'm a small women and that little car turned into a tank without power steering. I called my dealer he said no recall and it would cost $109. 00 to diagnose and $120. 00- $653. 00 just for parts not labor. I checked on line and there have been thousands of complaints about the same problem. The chevy cobalt and pontiac g5 have been recalled and they have the identical electric power steering assist motor. Why haven,t you recalled the Hhr? for the first time ever as driver have I felt unsafe in my vehicle. Please address this issue before this turns into unnecessary, preventable tragedies. I pray it is not me!!!!!!.

18 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the power steering failure light illuminated and the vehicle lost power steering function, making it very hard to control. The vehicle was taken to a personal mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the power steering module, motor, and arm would need to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileages were 120,000.

19 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2012

As I was driving home on I-40, I lost power steering, the power steering light came on, and the steering was extremely hard to control, and turning was almost impossible to maneuver safely. The exit ramp was especially bad. Making it especially unsafe was I had my young grandchildren with me. I find it hard to believe there isn't a recall on this issue, as I am finding hundreds of similar complaints on the 2006 Hhr power steering that are very similar, this made driving very hazardous, almost impossible, until it could be repaired.

20 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

I am a 35 year old mother of 3 and I recently had a dangerous close call while driving my 2006 chevy Hhr. I was driving with my children on board and I suddenly lost power steering. I quickly managed to control my vehicle but it was a close call. I took my vehicle to my nearest chevy dealer for inspection. I was told what was the exact problem with the steering column and the estimated cost of repair would be $1600. 00. I went home and quickly researched into the problem. I found out that I was not the only owner of a chevy Hhr to have this similiar problem. I found out also that the chevy cobalt (which also has the same steering column) has a recall on it but not the chevy Hhr. It is only logical that the chevy Hhr should have a recall also because the steering column is identical. Public safety should be the number one concern.

21 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

I was coming home from work in heavy traffic and making a left hand turn when the power steering light came on and the vehicle suddenly was very hard to turn. I entered into another lane before I could get it back in mine. I stopped on the freeway and turned off my vehicle. A young man stopped and asked me what the problem was and I told him it terrified me, but that while turning my power steering went out. I had lost my power steering. He said my power steering was electrical and to try and turn the car back on to reset the power steering. I did, and the power steering was fine. Made it home. However, have had about 10 more instances of the power steering going out while at a stop light, while turning, and while driving on a straight freeway. It is in the Chevrolet dealer as of today. $1,307. 00 to fix. They checked my VIN # and said I don't qualify for any recalls. This is so dangerous. Gm should recall these, and or pay us for this problem we have had to get fixed.

22 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2012

While driving, the dashboard signaled "power steering" and the car immediately lost all power steering making turning very difficult. After turning the engine off and on again, power steering resumed. The problem didn't return again for about 150+ miles. Each time it happened, the "cure" was to turn off the engine and restart. However, the time between recurrences became shorter and the owners manual's only information said to 'return to the dealer'. I did this and the system was replaced for several hundred dollars (I don't have the bill handy right now). From what I have found on this NHTSA site, the steering failure is a known deficiency and a frequent complaint of Hhr owners. Chevy needs to be forced to make repairs and restitution - this is a serious safety issue - when the steering fails, it immediately makes turning dangerous!.

23 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

The car would lose power steering after accelerating past 5 or 10 mph. Initially you could turn the ignition off and back on and it would have power steering for a period and then go off again. "power steering" flashed on the dash display. After a few weeks the problem continued and could no longer be remedied by turning the car off and on again. Our regular repair shop stated the dealer would have to fix it when we had them doing some routine maintenance. The dealer cost being an unknown we just decided to live without power steering going on a year or so now. We finally bit the bullet and brought it in - bad motor according to the dealership with repair cost $379. After seeing so many people posting on the web with the same problem it's clear the model should be recalled. I have a complaint in to general motors at this time and they are seeing if they can help. It would be great if they would, I don't think we should have to pay for this. We will buy a new vehicle to replace this one probably within 12 months. Reluctant to buy american made again - we have had much better luck with multiple toyotas. Hope people continue to post complaints - that's the only way recalls and corporate accountability can happen.

24 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2011

Car suddenly loses power steering. Shutting off the car allows the power steering to reset and work again but it loses the power steering again at random times. Most of the time it only works for 30 seconds, sometimes the entire trip in the car, and other times it cuts off in the middle of a trip. Especially dangerous when it shuts off in the middle of a turn. Cobalts and pontiac g5 have had similar problems resulting in a recall. Same steering components?.

25 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2010

Power steering light comes on and lose power steering ability. Normal driving conditions. No excessive turning. Turn off car and it will be fine for a few miles and then do it again. Unable to steer vehicle very well when this happens.

26 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. While driving at any speed, the contact stated that the vehicle would lose power steering making it difficult to steer; the check engine and power steering warning lights would illuminate. The contact pulled off the road, turned the vehicle off and restarted the vehicle to regain power steering; however the check engine warning light continued to illuminate. The contact did not inform the dealer. The manufacturer was notified who informed the contact that there were no related recalls. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current mileages were approximately 40,900 and the failure mileages were approximately 39,000. Updated 05/03/lj updated 05/04/11.

27 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2010

2006 chevy Hhr lt, while driving at a posted speed of 45mph, daughter lost power steering sending her into the curb almost hitting another car then into the curb again. She was terrified by this incident. My husband went to pick her up and he drove the vehicle back to our house, and while on the highway at 65mph, again the power steering failed, and he almost crashed into the wall but was able to bring the vehicle to a stop within inches of crashing. The power steering light has now come on several times, and the steering has gone out while driving three times thus far. In addition the gear shift has become a problem again where it locks, and I have already had this replaced 3 times, each time lasting about a year before the problem reoccurs. I have read that several other 2006 models have been experiencing the same power steering problem, several of them resulting in accidents. Are they waiting for someone to be killed before expanding the recall to include the steering on the 2006 chevy Hhr?.

28 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

2006 chevy Hhr power steering failure. Lost power steering in a sharp curve. Immediate and with no advanced warning. Forced to shoulder and almost into a ditch. The warning message and chime worked but that doesn't help you control the vehicle!! fortunately I was driving this time. If my wife had been driving there is no way with her limited strength that we would have made it around the curve. I understand from the internet that this is a recurring problem for Hhrs and chevy cobalts. They both use the same faulty power steering motor. Chevy has issued a recall onthe cobalts. Why not the Hhr?.

29 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

While driving a tone alert sounding and power steering warning came across digital display, at time lost all power steering and could hardly steer auto to the side of roadway. After calling the Chevrolet garage was told this is a common problem with the electrical motor and several others were recalled but not for the Hhr I have. If the electrical motors are failing in other models gm should replace all the electrical power steering motors to avoid accidents.

30 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

My car, Chevrolet Hhr LS 2006, lost power steering more than 10 times as of December of 2009. I had my car repaired at chevy dealer 4 times already for same problem. Each time they fixed the problem, but it came back again and again, and recently it happened more often. I leased this brand new car in 2006. At the end of 3 years leasing, I bought it in 2009. I took good care of it all the time. The power steering failure first happened in Dec. Of 2009. When I was driving on the road, suddenly it was hard to make a turn, and my car was thrown forward each time when I got oil to move forward. The message "power steering" popped up on the display panel. I had my car towed to chevy dealer because the driving wheel could not be moved at all after restarted the car;however, when my car was at chevy dealer, the problem disappeared and they could not find other problem. Then 2 months later, it happened again and disappeared after half day. After this repeated 3 or 4 times, my car was towed the 2nd time to chevy dealer on Feb. 26, 2010 because the driving wheel could not turned. This time they found something and fixed it. In the following 3 months, this problem was happened and gone at least 3 times. We were scared and did not dare to drive far from home. On may 24, 2010, my husband got same problem with engine light on and he drove to chevy dealer immediately. They fixed it. Only one week later, on June 2nd, the car was towed the 3rd time to the chevy dealer for same problem. They replaced the steering column and steering module. My husband picked it up the next day, but just after 2 miles driving, same problem occurred, so he had to drive back to the dealer right away. They fixed it and drove 50 miles to test it and it was good. Yesterday I drove it home and it was good too. But this morning, same problem happened again. Since it is Saturday, the chevy store does not open. We can not go anywhere, even grocery stores. This really is a disaster, we are so scared!.
