Every couple weeks while driving my car, there will be a ding sound with a message indicating power steering failure. I have to pull over and keep turning it on and off. It is very dangerous since I have to drive on a highway to get to work.

5 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2017

The electric power steering will go out while driving for no apparent reason. The light will light up on the dash stating power steering failure. Sometimes when I am in a curve the power steering will go out making it difficult to control the car in a curve because it's not expected. I can be driving down the interstate and it will just go out. I will have to stop the car and shut the car off and restart it and it will be fine for a little while and then it will go out again, and will have to repeat the cycle of stopping and shutting the car off or continue to drive without a power steering unit, which I have to do most of the time since I drive a lot on the interstate. I have read that a lot of people with this same car has experienced the same issues and I don't understand why general motors have not recalled these cars and replaced these defective power steering units.

8 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

Power steering fails suddenly, making the car impossible to steer. This has happened in heavy traffic and on the freeway at higher speed. Other Hhr's have been recalled for this problem but not the 2006 models. I've read other 2006 owners complaining of this same problem. I've checked the fuses and cannot find any reason for this problem. If I turn the ignition off, then restart the car the steering works fine for about 5 minutes before the steering goes out again. This problem started about 5 months ago, about may 2016. At first it occurred randomly, but now happens every time I drive it. Speed has no bearing on the problem as I can be driving 20 mph or 70 mph. I currently have 149,580 miles on this car. I've had the recalled ignition replaced twice and I'm wondering if this problem is related as the power steering is electric. I've had several close calls and feel the car is too dangerous to drive.

23 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2013

Bought 2006 Hhr lt new for my company. Purchased it from my company for personal use in early 2011. While my daughter was practicing parallel parking at the dmv (for license test), the power steering quit working. This was the first time it happened. The failure occurred when she was fully stopped and turned the wheel all the way to the right to begin the parking maneuver. It happened on the third practice for the day. Turned the Hhr off, let it set 30 sec, and turned it back on. Steering reset. Worked for a couple of practices, and then the power assist quit again. This happened three times, with the 3rd time not resetting. Left and drove off with no power steering. A couple of miles down the road, turned off the Hhr at a stoplight. It reset when I turned the Hhr back on. Went to the dealer that day (christmas eve 2013) to get it fixed. They replaced the power steering motor - $453. Seemed to work fine. Went to dmv site again today (christmas) for further parking practice and the power steering failed again -- during the wheel turn at a complete stop. Happened twice; reset both times. Quit practice in frustration. Obviously the motor was not the issue . . . Or not the only issue. Seems to be a recurring theme on this site that Hhr steering has design flaws. Probably past time for regulators to see that the statistics justify a recall on the Hhr's power steering. Going back to dealer tomorrow. How much this time is the big question?.

28 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Power steering assist motor failed. Reset after shutoff and restart of car. Problem intermittent, occuring sometimes not at all, other times repeatedly (ie 5 times in a three mile drive). Problem always occurred while moving during a variety of speeds (25-75mph) and while decellerating and accellerating. The only circumstance in which it did not occur was standing still or turning. Dealer said short circuit in power steering assist motor was the problem and repaired it quickly. There are not a lot of miles on my vehicle, for a part like this to break and not be related to a defect seems less than realistic. I've read about the same part on chev cobalts (the Hhr platform) being recalled and many complaints by Hhr owners regarding the same issue. Note: when I told the service dept I was using my mechanical breakdown insurance (via geico), they asked what my deductible was ($250); interestingly, when I called to ask about replacing stated part, was told repair was "about $400" but actual repair billing ended up being $218.

34 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2011

The electric power steering has failed intermittently over the past months since July 4, 2011. The first incident was on July 4, 2011 when the power steering failed on a family trip almost causing an accident at 65 mph. There have been up to a dozen instances since with the latest being on oct 2, 2011 causing my wife to run off the interstate into the median. Gm claims there is no recall, however there are recalls for the same exact electric power steering motors for the cobalts from gm. The Hhr's need to be a part of this recall as the motor is the same exact one as the cobalt. Please recall these also before someone gets hurt or worse. The internet sites are filled with complaints on this issue.

35 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2011

I was driving my wifes car to the gm dealership to have the recall on the ignition switch repaired, as I entered the cloverleaf exiting the interstate the power steering failed, I made it to the dealership, left the car running and showed the servive manager what it did, he felt of the steering and agreed the power steering was bad, he checked and said it was not under a recall. After some research I found that the cobalt has a recall for the same thing.
