Power steering warning light comes on while driving and difficult to steer. Resets when ignition turned off and back on, however repeatedly happens every few blocks while driving. This is dangerous and there is a recall for later 2009-2010. . . Why not for all years?.

On the date above I had my power steering warning light come on and stayed on for about 2 hours. The next day when I started the car the light was out. Well this week I received a letter from gm stating that if the light comes on or if you have had an issue with the light coming on to take it to your dealer. These are the exact words in the letter: if this condition occurs on your 2006 Chevrolet Hhr, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Today took my car in for a routine service and ask the dealer about the letter and he said he would check on it. A few minutes later he told me they had a power steering motor in stock and it would take about 45 minutes to install if I had the time and I said I could wait. He came to the waiting room and said I was ready to go and the steering motor was not the problem causing the light, but the steering control module which is part of the steering column assembly and not covered by the letter. Well guess what, the steering column assembly is only sold with a new steering motor, so if I replaced the column gm gets $578. 59 for the part plus labor cost to install and they pay for nothing to cure the issue. I was a mechanic on road trucks and heavy equipment for several years and know if you have an electric motor it has to get it's commands on how to react from some type of control source ( steering control module) would be my guess wouldn't you think. No where in my letter does it state steering motor only is covered to solve the issue and no where on the reimbursement request form does it say they will only reimburse for the motor. I had an online chat with a gm customer service and was told only the motor according to her written information. When I requested a copy of what is covered, I was told to ask the dealer for a copy.

2006 Chevrolet Hhr LS driving down the highway and the power steering light came on in the dic. Had difficulty steering back home on the highway. Replaced fuse and starting working again, but a few minutes of driving made it turn back on. Turned car off and then back on it worked fine, a few minutes later the power steering light came back on and the power steering stopped working again.
We were on vacation and I was traveling on a road at the posted speed of 30 mph. I was going around a bend and immediately my power steering light came on, there was a chime, it became very difficult to manage the bend I was going around and I hit a light pole damaging my front bumper. At that same time, my mhp and rmp needles began bouncing back and forth and the car was "jerking". I turned the car off. It was still drivable, but within a few seconds the power steering light came back on, the needles bounced and car jerked. I called gm to see if there was a recall on the power steering. They informed me that there were several gm power steering recalls on several years of Hhr, cobalt and saturns. They all have very similar power steering mechanisms. However, my year, 2006, was not on that recall. I have researched and found thousands of people with 2006 Hhr's complaining of the same issues but not understanding why that year is not included in the recall.
Taking a used car for a test drive ,downshifting to stop at a light to take a right turn heard an alarm then the power steering illuminated on the dash. I told the salesman that it was hard steering and the light was on , he told me that it was just low on fluid. I got home and did some checking to find that it's electric power steering. Is there a problem with the motor or what? I put down a $2000. 00 deposit which they say is non refundable. Are they liable to fix it before I leave the lot or do I wait for a recall?.

This is my 2nd complaint about power steering on my 2006 Hhr after complaining the first time and no guaranteed help financially and told to pay 200 dollars to have my vehicle inspected at a gm dealers . I replaced 2 solenoids and had no problem for about 1 1/2 years. My power steering goes out while driving with no warning. The problem is back this is the 3rd time this month . But today frightened me while driving my daughter to school I was driving 70 mph went to exit hwy and boom no power steering then indicator(turn signal) was out because of power steering light started flashing after the fact . This is very dangerous morning traffic with semi trucks zipping around me . I have gone down this road with you on this matter before . It is a obvious problem with this make and model of car. I have read 1000 + complaints about this problem on every site I have looked at to find a fix. Why wait until a life is lost before you handle it. Also you have a faulty part in automatic transmission shifter that you are aware of a small plastic pin that falls out and sticks and you can not shift it into gear. I bought the new shifter that is made much better and I need to have it installed. I will try to stay with the one problem power steering . I find it shocking that you have this many complaints on several sites and nothing has been done looking again after 2 years. Its not the ignition key that worries me as much as power steering. This needs to be recalled and fixed. Teresa.
On April 17, 2014 I started my 2006 Chevrolet Hhr by remote to warm it up. After it was warmed up I got in it to drive to work. The car was really jerking bad then the indicator light came on and had power steering on it. I was still in the apartment complex drive so I turned it around and managed to go back to my parking space and parked it. This morning I decided to try and drive my car again. I managed to get to work that is only 2 1/2 miles from where I live. I was driving under 30 mph since I drive through town to get to work. As soon as I turned into my workplace's parking lot the power steering indicator light came on again. I parked the car and turned it off then back on. The power steering indicator light was still on and now the steering wheel is locked up. I have read several complaints about this problem with other Hhrs but the year 2006 is not on recall while 2009 and 2010 is for this problem.

I was driving down an interstate highway at about 55mph when the power steering light came on and lost all of my power steering almost causing an accident. Luckily I got the car over to the shoulder. I turned the car off and restarted it to see if that would remedy the issue and 10 minutes down the road again, it did the same thing. I tried to change out the fuse under the hood and to no avail, the power steering went out within 5 minutes this time. This is a very serious issue and gm should fix this issue. I've had alot of cars and never had a power steering issue with this esp. I may never buy another gm product again.

Shortly after we purchased our, 06 Chevrolet Hhr, in may 2013, my fiance, infant child and I was out looking at homes to possibly purchase. When suddenly, without warning, the the power steering light came on and I lost all control of the car. I came to a sudden stop against the curbside to avoid hitting anything or anyone. Until now, I had no knowledge as to why that happened. I see that many Chevrolet Hhr owners has experienced the same thing with their vehicle. I want to know why gm has not recalled these cars for repairs along with the other vehicles for the same issues. We have experienced everything that has been listed as a condition of defects found in our car.
