37 Power Train problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I have had 3 problems so far where my power steering went out. I have contacted two different chevy dealers and they said that my VIN number is not on the recall list. On the gm website it says that there is a recall on the 2009 chevy Hhr electronic power steering. Because the dealer says my VIN is not included they refuse to honor the recall. I would like gm to step up and take responsibility to repair this issue. I am concerned that I could be involved in a accident because of this issue. . Read more...

39 Power Train problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/06/2014

Driving down the road, no noise or indication of a problem then power steering indicator came on. No power steering. Pulled over, turned off the car and checked under the hood. Everything was intact. Got back in, steering was working again. Maybe 2 minutes down the road and got the power steering warning again. Power steering was gone again. 4 year old car should not have this issue-would like to see recall.

42 Power Train problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

While driving my Hhr ss a service esc message appeared in the dic along with a chime like the dinging of no seat belt. Then a power steering message came after that. When this happens my steering wheel locks up and is hard to turn. I have heard that some of these steering columns have been recalled! why not the Hhr ss!! I have been told that it is the angle position sensor and the entire steering column has to be replaced! when this first accurd my vehicle did have a warranty but they said that because it was deemed an angle position sensor that warranty would not cover it even though the whole steering column has to be replace because of it being a ss. This is a major problem that I have seen alot of Hhr owners are having and this should be recalled!.

43 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/31/2013

Key got stuck in ignition. This apparently is a common known issue with this vehicle. They did a recall but only on the 2009 models. The gear shift assembly goes bad and there is a plastic piece that breaks causing the key to get stuck. I had to go into the steering column to manually release the key. The gear shift also will go into any position without having to press the button, which is a huge safety issue since it can be put into reverse while driving, etc. Tried to take it in to get fixed but will cost about $300. This should have been a recall since it has been an issue with all the early Hhr models, not just the 2009.

44 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that the gear lever failed to shift from park or into any gear until after numerous attempts. Additionally, the vehicle would jerk and surge once the gear shift was moved out of the park position. The failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 97,000.

45 Power Train problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

The powersteering message displayed on the dash and the wheel locked up on the expressway, luckily I was able to pull over to the side of the road so that it would not cause an accident.

46 Power Train problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

I was driving home and got into the turning lane to turn across two lanes of traffic. My speed was about 25 mph and I heard a "ding" and looked at the information panel on my dash. It said "power steering". I wasn't aware at the time, but once I tried to turn (once traffic cleared) I realized I had lost power steering. I was only 2 miles from my house, so I continued home---manhandling the steering wheel through each turn until I arrived in my driveway. It has happened three more times since then, and I continue to drive until I get to a red traffic signal, turn the car off, and restart it. Luckily, (so far), it has reset itself and the power steering works again. I am concerned as to why there has been no recall on this, as there are tons of issues on this make, model, and year. I have a 1 1/2 yr. Old son and all I can think of is how fortunate I have been that each time this has occurred, he hasn't been in the vehicle with me. Come on, Chevrolet, please fix this issue! we also own a chevy trailblazer and love our chevy products, but I am concerned now as to whether I will buy another one when it's time.

47 Power Train problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/22/2013

I bought my car a week ago. Drove it home with no incident. Then drove it was on the highway to take my elderly mother to an airport 40 miles away. After seeing her off, I went to get my new car washed. Then got back onto the I-5 and drove about 3 miles, when I heard a tone and the dash board under the speedometer lit up, stating I had lost power steering. I was in the middle lane of six lanes, going 60 miles an hours in a brand new to me car I was not used to driving, in congested commuter traffic. I am not strong. I was scared out of my mind. Luckily I was on a straight away. I put on my hazard lights and people eventually let me over. I took the next off ramp and managed my way home on frontage roads and side streets, which of course took forever. Arriving home I turned the ignition off and cried with relief and frustration. Then I turned the ignition back on to see what the message on the dash was again and it was gone. I'm terrified to drive this car again. And everything thing I've read online since, said that if the shop doesn't see the message or duplicate the problem, they can't fix it, equalling money wasted. This problem is not new, highly dangerous and recalled in at least one of Chevrolet's other cars and recalled on the Hhr in canada. Why not here??? aren't americans as valuable as canadians??? please make this a recall and contact me when you do. I have a car I can't drive without fear and can't sell in good conscience. I am older, in poor health and without much money, I feel that I have been cheated. No one should be allowed to sell unsafe cars any where!!! I also feel this problem is why Chevrolet is discontinuing the Hhr, and leaving us out in the cold with their mistake. Does someone have to die for a recall??? I feel it was close in my case!!! *I will begrudgingly be taking it to a dealer for repair. What else can I do?.

48 Power Train problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/19/2013

The power steering turns off while driving. It makes the car extremely difficult to steer and maneuver. Turning the engine off, resets the module and it will work for a bit. There is a click just before it goes out. Twice the click occur has occurred while turning a corner. In both instances the engine turned off. No warning, except a click, and then no ability to drive the car, because it has completely shut off. I have complained to the dealer for several months. They tell me there are no issues, but now they issue a recall for power steering. My vehicle year is not within the recall. I do not understand why a car shutting off while driving is not an issue. It was very concerning for me. It is extremely difficult to maneuver the vehicle when the power steering shuts off, but impossible when it stalls in a turn.

51 Power Train problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/19/2013

I have a 2007 chevy Hhr and few months ago my traction control light come on and engine light. Then shortly after my power steering went out. The power steering has been going out periodically. . . Last time was on a exit ramp on the curve. I almost put it in the ditch. I understand that the cobalt had recalls on these items but not the Hhr. Which makes no sense because of the same chassis and all. I took it to ed schidmt chevy in perrysburg ohio and they said I need a steering column (because power steering module is in column), power steering motor, camshaft valve actuators, left lower control arm, and front struts. I have read a lot of internet forums and there has been many compliants on same issues. Chevy should take care of this. Dealership wants $2300+ for the repairs.

52 Power Train problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

Called the chevy dealer, told me that it was Friday and to call first thing Monday morning. As I continued on freeway I realized that the ride was rougher, something was very wrong. To steer was harder, trip odometer both were not working, cruise control would not engage, speedometer was not working, transmission not shifting easily, pulled into chevy dealer, found the service manager. Asked him to check the car, hours on sign stated that someone would available until 5:30. It was currently 4:50 pm. He assured me that is was safe to drive care: pulled out of dealership, transmission would not shift at all. Engine light came on turned around, went back. He was just leaving to go home it was 5:10 at this time. When he saw me he got out of his car, came over, I told him the increased changes and why I turned around:I had my 80 year old aunt with me I live 14 miles outside of town it was Friday afternoon I did not want to make matters worse by driving this car say an accident or doing more damage to the repairs needed. He put it on the analysis scope he said he had mixed messages. One was it said power steering but with the wrong code. After that there was nothing that showed up. He again assured me that we would be fine! I pulled out of the dealership, drove 2 miles, then was coasting! had no transmission. Pulled over to side of road, turned off the engine sat for a few minutes, restarted continued down the highway with my flashers on. It would not shift higher than second gear. We limped to a friends house parked the car, they gave us a ride home. What would have happened if I had continued down that road. Please help.

55 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

Vehicle will stall and we will crash or be hit by some one. When the vehicle stalls you loose all power that is power steering, brakes, the ability to maintain control of my vehicle . It began with my key getting stuck in the ignition, would have to try to place in park multiple times to release the key. Found the panel in the steering column and the release button to remove key. Now the gear shift button is stuck in the pressed position, making the car vulnerable to coming out of gear. This is extremely unsafe and costly to fix. Additional personal research has indicated this is a common & known issue with the manufacturer.

56 Power Train problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/14/2013

Power steering stops working at all speeds and conditions. Dash lights up saying power steering and from that point on until vehicle is restarted there is no power steering. It has happen many times over the last week dealer states that the power steering motor is bad and needs to be replaced at a cost of $265. There are 1000s of complaints of this happening why is nothing being done. Canadian Hhr has a recall on this but not us Hhr. Its not the money its the safety of the motoring public that is question here. If not for the fact I have driven a car not equipped with power steering before it could have been really bad when it turned off in a turn.

Failure Date: 01/18/2013

The power steering light comes on frequently. I have no power steering and have to do it manually which makes is very difficult to steer. This has been happening more and more. Sometimes I can only back out of the driveway when this happens. As there are numerous complaints on this issue, I am wondering way chevy doesn't do a recall.

59 Power Train problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/16/2013

I pulled in my driveway and put the car in park and could not turn off the key. I tried to everything, steering wheel, key, shifter, brakes, etc and I could not turn the car off or get the key out. I had to pull a fuse to get the car to shut down. This problem is similar, if not exactly, the same of other complaints on this type car. I will probably have to have it towed and repaired by a dealer at great expense. Not good for gm.

62 Power Train problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/07/2012

While driving and making my turn the powersteering went out on my 2010 chevy Hhr . This has happened a few times now,the chime would sound and power steering showed in the dashboard and after restarting the car it seemed okay . I see there is alot of complaints on this safety issue and this needs to be address before someone is killed because it is very hard to complete a turn with no power steering and you just don't expect that to happen which is more scarier.

63 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/29/2012

Power steering message on dash; security light comes on; rpm, speed, and gas gauges jump, transmission jerks, clicking in center console under shifter. After turning engine off for period of time runs like normal, restart an drive for period of time and power steering goes out while driving.

64 Power Train problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/27/2012

Buyers beware: on Saturday evening we put the Hhr into park and went to turn off the key and the key got stuck in the ignition. Tried several times to reput the car into gear and turn they key but it was permanently stuck in the on position. Had to wind up pulling a fuse out of the engine to cut off the car. Just took it to the dealership and they are refusing to acknowledge a problem and are forcing us to pay hundreds of dollars to get the car fixed. They are also blaming us for pulling the fuse and it causing an indicator light to come on.

65 Power Train problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/10/2012

The car won't shift down to reverse neutral or drive.

66 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Some portion of the shifter mechanism failed. It allows the vehicle to shift gears at will, with or without a key and with or without the engine running. It also allows the vehicle to be put into gear without depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle can 'bump' from 'park' into any gear and from any gear to any other gear, including "reverse". While driving, one bump caused it to shift into 'neutral'. Another caused a downshift. One can leave turn off the ignition & leave the car without putting it securely into 'park'. I am not positive, but I believe I could also make the steering column lock while the ignition was on. I tried this while attempting to remove the key. I did nto want to try again, fearing I would make the situation worse. Additionally, the key is now retained in the ignition and can not be removed. The car can be more easily stolen. (on mine, I found out how to force the key out of the ignition. But the gear shifter can still bump around. ) the mentioned crash was from exiting the car either without it being securely in 'park' or from having it fallout of 'park'. It rolled into a parked vehicle. I entered "0 mph" because I wasn't there to see the car roll. It was on a small enough incline that no damage was done other than scratches.

67 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/04/2012

After traveling back and forth from one county to another (approx 130 miles roundtrip) as I exited the fwy the car was driving normal except for I was on empty at this point. I came to a complete stop when light turned green I began to accelerate. Upon acceleration at approx. 10-15mph the car made a hard jerking motion as though it was having a hard time shifting gears however my 06 Hhr is an automatic. At this point I also noticed that the check engine light had now illuminated on the instrument panel. I took the car straight home and did not attempt to drive again for 3-4 days. Then one day I drove it approx 15 miles all was good. I went shopping upon leaving the car still appeared to be normal. Then while on the fwy approx 70mph I noticed the check engine light on again as well as the t/c light (traction control) the car continued to drive "normal" but once I came to a stop on the offramp and began to accelerate the jerking motion happened again. I've noticed that on a few occasions this happens once the gas is on empty. I also noticed on one occasion that once I had put a little over half a tank of gas in as well as a bottle of fuel injector cleaner that the indicator lights shut off as well as the jerking had disappears. We have had the transmission flushed and still the problem persists. Aside from that when you try to remote start the engine once the check engine light has come on the remote start no longer works. You hear the electrical all come on but that's it. Then all of a sudden the other night I attempt to exit my car and the driver door handle snapped right off. My husband contacted the local dealership requesting price for the part and was told $300+. I just found the piece for $63. 00 online. . . Unbelievable! but the handle broke so easily. I didn't pull hard. If I had the door would've at least popped open a lil. But it didn't budge.

68 Power Train problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/30/2012

While idling, the power steering light came on and when I moved forward there was no power steering, I reached a destination and cut the car off. The power steering came back on when I restarted the car some time later. It worked okay for a day or so then began to go off and on while driving. Now it is more off than on. The chevy Hhr has the same power train as the chevy cobalt which is under recall. I contacted a dealer this morning who said there is not a recall at this time for the Hhr.

69 Power Train problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/25/2012

2008 chevy Hhr required a new transmission. Only 104,124 miles.

70 Power Train problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/22/2012

For about a month my key kept getting stuck in the ignition but I could always get it out myself. I would shift from "park" to "drive" and then back to "park" to remove it. Finally one day I could not remove it. I brought it to the dealership and had to have a part in the shifter replaced to fix the problem. Apparently the "car" could no longer recognize it was in park and safe to remove the keys. The cost was $250. 00 and now the key still sticks. It seems like this is a real problem and chevy should take responsibility for it.
