Six problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Takata recall: my sons antitheft constantly turns on causing the car not to start or shut off and disables his keyless remotes which than need to be reprogrammed. After searching online I was able to find a way to get it started due to many people having the same issue had some tricks. My son is in college and has been stranded many times due to this malfunction. He's had 2 accidents where the car won't fully stop causing him to hit a car. His ac light constantly shuts off making the ac not work proper. This is the worse car!.
The theft system, passlock, fails causing the car to not start for 10 minutes. This can and has happened consecutively, sometimes causing a wait of 30 minutes, before the car can be started. Apparently the theft deterrent system is defective, known issue with gm, and does not read the key properly when inserted in the ignition system. So, it will shut off the fuel pump to the engine, disabling the engine.
The motor keep going out.
: the contact stated while traveling 60 mph, the engine ran hot. In March 2006, the service dealer could not locate any problem. In oct 2006, the vehicle ran hot again causing smoke to come out from under the engine. When pulled over, the contact discovered the vehicle needed antifreeze. The contact filled the antifreeze and tried to drive the vehicle again. Within one mile smoke came out of the engine and the antifreeze was empty again.
Theft light comes on and car will not start. Wait 10-15 minutes car starts fine. Problem happens about 2-3 times a month. Problem has happened when weather is sunny and hot and in perfect weather and also when it has been raining.
