36 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

Driving from queens to brooklyn, NY and suddenly without warning, the turn signals stopped working, so I stuck my arm out the window to try to compensate for the lack. Every day that I drive, the turn signals work for about 15 minutes then stop (even the emergency flashers stop working). I've taken the car to mechanics who are as stumped as I was (until today) when I saw the NHTSA. Dot recall and investigation list which included my car 2000 chevy impala.

37 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2010

Turn signals have not been working upon demand. As of 9/82010 my turn signals have stopped working all together. Gm said my VIN did not fall in the recall category of the same vehicles with the same problem.

38 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

Turn signals inoperable. Flasher inoperable. This makes it impossible to alert other drivers of intent to turn or change lanes causing a dangerous situation. I was told there has already been a recall by the Chevrolet representative. The recall was for the turn signals and hazard switch and both have been replaced by a previous owner at 70000 mi. Under the previous recall. I am now having the same problem at 172000 mi. And was told it is now not their responsibility.

39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

I have a 2000 chevy Malibu. It has something called the passlock system or theft system and it prevents the car from starting. It prevents the car from starting all the time. This isn't the first time you have received this complaint I bet. I have put an extra $2000 into the car after I brought it hoping it would fix it but I still have the problem. I have read on-line and everyone who owns a 96 and up gm car has this problem. Everyone says gm doesn't care about this problem and they won't fix it. They say this is the only way to get them to fix it. If we complain on here. Please make them fix this problem with their cars because you would save over 1,000,000 people time and frustration. No joke, literally 1,000,000 people have this problem. This is why they went bankrupt. Gm sucks. This is why America sucks as a nation. We have to complain on here to fix our problems. No offense to you. I don't have enough money to by another car, as most people with this problem. Please do the right thing and make gm fix it. I know it is not the american way to give the people what they want but maybe this time we can make an exception. Please help all of us who would love to buy a different car but don't have the money. Thank you.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

The car was running fine, then about a week ago the turn signals stopped working. This is also effecting my hazard lights. It happens intermittently. This is occurring daily.

41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

The blinkers of my 2000 chevy Malibu turn off randomly and I don't know it until I go to make a turn which can absolutely result in a crash. It also affects my passenger side window and rear passenger brakelights which will not come on though the bulbs are new. I looked into recalls and there was indeed a recall regarding this exact problem stating the hazard light switch overheats and melts and then disrupts the electrical system specifically affecting this part of my car. When I called the manufacturer they told me that I was five days late to have the part fixed. Being that I only bought this car in March of this year, 2009, I should have received a recall notice so that this could have been fixed, but received no such information in the mail and am unable to afford to fix this very dangerous problem. Also, when I go to start my car, it will randomly turn on the theft system light and not allow the car to start. On investigation apparently, the chevy Malibu comes with the passkey system and despite that the company knows that it is faulty they will do nothing to fix it. Though it is their fault they just told me to replace the key cylinder which is not definite to work, or to spray graphite powder in it to help with connection but that overall it is my problem. Why is it that I have a car that was bought in running condition that will kill itself randomly and that is my problem when it is a manufacturers defect!? I can never know when or when not my car will start and have missed work and other important events. And in case of an emergency there is a possibility that it will not start! or that I could be trapped in a dangerous situation because my car simply decides that the key that is supposed to start it and is linked to it will not work. This is truly unacceptable and not right for chevy to think that we should just deal with a car that is broken though not the consumers fault and all of the options they give for fixing it are not definite.

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2009

2000 chevy Malibu with passlock lock problems . . What a nightmare someone needs to do something about this. .

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2009

Theft system/passlock. Daily this is triggered preventing me from starting my vehicle for ten minutes. I have a highly special needs child and it's critical that my vehicle gets me to him or takes him where he needs to go. I've always been late for work several times, and most recently today I left work early from being sick and rendered unable to start the car, twice. I don't need the theft system, I can't afford a 'possible' fix and from everyone I've spoken to- nothing has worked to fix their issues. I think this should be recalled to have this fixed, taken out (if there's a way) or give us a trade in! my car is paid for, I can't afford to go get a new one!.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

The passlock system keeps messing up, my light flashes and the I have to what 10 min. To start it. Sometimes the light stays on. This happens about a dozen times a week. I am left stranded in a dark parking lot at 10pm after school. I am a afraid of being out alone at night as it is but now I am stranded out for 10 mins.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2008

Theft system light blinks can't start car. If I wait 10 15 minutes it will stop blinking and it will start. I have been late for work two time in the last 2 weeks.

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

Theft deterrent system in my 2000 Chevrolet Malibu sometimes (too often!) will erroneously prevent me from starting my car. I'm using the original gm keys - not copies!! extremely inconvenient - you have to wait 10 minutes before you can try again - and potentially unsafe.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2007

The truth is all I want is my safety and my problem is very serious +the problem is listed under the NHTSA defect investigation# ea02037 and recall# 03v327000 with dates of recall from Feb 1st 2000 - may 31 2001 my vehicle was manufactured in oklahoma in April 2000 however calling gm a representative of gm named [xxx] informed me that my gm is not on the recall list after 30 min of trying to figure out why I asked for a supervisor named [xxx] whom was not in the office and is supposed to call back and then I asked for that person supervisor presumably the manager and I was told I could not speak to that person and when I asked for that persons name I was told that the managers it was against company policy to give out the managers name and also against company policy to give out any last names furthermore I was given incorrect information about the manufacturing plant of my vehicle. I believe I should have my car on the recall list if I fit the description accurately and fall in between the correct dates it is a very serious safety hazard and could become fatal if not fixed very soon. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2006

1. Ebcm failure 2. Hazard light failure.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

Hazard and turn signal works intermittently, I found that a recall on my make of car was issued in 2003, parts no available till 2004, due to losing my home in hurricane ivan my mail was messed up for quite some time, I am having this problem and would like to know if it would be covered. We replaced bulbs and fuses but problem still there, I can tap or hold the hazard button and turn signals will work for a moment. This is a 2000 Malibu with appr. 74,000 miles. All warranty work and oil changes has always been kept up, I would like to know if my car falls in the recall.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2006

I have a 2000 chevy Malibu. As many Malibu owners my car has the same issues. Blower fan doesn't work on setting 1 and 2, rear speakers don't work in cold weather, rear tail lights don't always work, weird braking issues in the cold, and air circulation button changes from closed to open automatically. These are just some electrical issues with the car and I think I found the root cause. The windshield rubber seal on my car was unattached from the window outside at the bottom on the passenger side. I found out because after a heavy rain a lot of water was showing on the floor of the passenger side. The water damages has been happening for years. I found water sitting in the plastic molding right under the blower fan. Water corroding the electrical cables on the floor. Water tracks over the computer board located under the glove box. I've informed Chevrolet and ask for them to create a TSB but they denied my request.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2006

On the way to the hospital the car died 21 times. It was acting like it was running out of gas. Had a full tank. We would sit for a time (5, 10, 15 or so minutes) and the car would start and run 10 feet or a few miles. On the way home from the hospital it died another 15 times and we called a tow truck. We have replaced the map sensor & fuel relay switch. With the tow and parts and labor we continue to get stranded. The garage tested the car and the computer gave no code. We are afraid to drive it any distance for fear of breaking down again. We just want it fixed.

56 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

My turn signal, hazard lights work periodically had them looked at and worked on and still have problems.

57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

I have already filed complaint in regards to the hazard light recall, which for some reason does not cover my 2000 Malibu. I noticed other complaints on the Malibu and figured I would throw my two cents in. I to have had to drop over $1000 dollars into the most defective car I have purchased this includes the $200 piece of junks I bought when I was a teenager. My list of problems. 1. Coolant system leak cost $700 note: mechanic laughed and said this happens all the time is this type of engine. In reviewing other complaints, the one really stands out. Nice I am glad gm owns up to its problems. 2. Brakes constantly need to be replaced well below mileage. Glad gm saved a few bucks under sizing the rotors. 3. Within a year the fans switch (levels 1,2) and lighter stopped working. Boy gm is saving lots money now. 4. Within the past year I had fuel pump failure, nothing like traveling in rush hour traffic doing 75mph and car totally dieing. Boy gm has made one quality car. 5. The last insult, my first and likely last gm product is when I thought boy I finally get something from gm in regards to one small defect, the hazard switch, I find out that my vehicle is not covered by this recall. Wow not only I am out at least $1000 bucks on piece of crap product, gm does not even want to give a bone to hungry man. With this type of product it is no wonder gm is losing market share faster than any other automotive company. Keep up the good work gm. Clearly the are some serious defects with this vehicle and the gm’s ownership with defects.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2004

Consumer stated that the light signals on vehicle did not work. She had a mechanic check the vehicle and determined that the switch in the steering column was defective. Consumer claimed that there was a recall on the light signals.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2004

We unfortunately own a 2000 chevy Malibu. We have already replaced the rotors several times for going out of round. We have also replaced the fuel pump at less then 50,000 miles at the cost of $728. 00. The air conditioner pops on and off on its own not cooling for the most part. The turn signals are nonfunctional and our VIN number is not included in the recall although it should be. Then there is the transmission slipping and the coolant leaking and the car overheating we are told this is a manifold intake gasket and will cost around 800. 00 to fix. The newest problem is the factory installed radio tuner is burned out and now we have to replace the radio costing yet another $100. 00 dollars or so this car has nickel and dimed us too much. After looking over your site I found these to be numerous complaints on the same year and model. I feel this car was a lemon across the board not just ours but, all 2000 Malibu's. Please look into these cars on a whole they were very badly manufactured and we all deserve some compensation for it.

60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2004

Ninety percent of the time the vehicle hazard lights didn't work and made noise. It was later determined that a solder had cracked and shorted out. Other vehicle's were recalled (recall# 03v327000) but the consumer's vehicle was not included .

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2004

I had the car for 3 1/2 years and it has given me so many problems with misfire sensors, clicking noise in the engine, noise while driving over a bump or hole, this is besides other problems like water pump, fuel pump, transmission, check engine light on the dashboard and much more.

62 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2004

While driving and/or attempting to use the turn signal, a short in the flasher switch made the turn signal inoperative and made other electrical components inoperative (ex. Gauges, radio and a/c fan). The electrical problem also caused the engine to stall. When the consumer pushed the flasher switch repeatedly the electrical components would work temporarily. The fuel pump was replaced to alleviate the stalling condition. The technician has identified a problem in the flasher switch but has not replaced it. A recall on the switch is scheduled to start later in 2004 however the consumer's vehicle is not included in the recall due to VIN.

63 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2003

The 4 way flasher failed to work properly after being turned on. The turn signals worked only intermittently when in use. Please provide further information.
