36 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2017

(ah missing dealer) tl the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the wave plate located in the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was currently being repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

37 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 60 mph, the gear shifted into neutral without warning and the vehicle began to slow down. The contact was able to coast the vehicle off to the side of the road. The vehicle was shut off and the contact waited for five minutes. The vehicle was able to restart and operated normally; however, the failure recurred another day. In addition, while at a complete stop, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle jolted as if it were going to stall. The contact observed that the gear shifted into neutral. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (fellers Chevrolet, 715 main st, altavista, va, 24517) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be rebuilt or replaced. The dealer stated that the VIN was not included in an open recall. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 12v460000 (power train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted and made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 152,000.

38 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2017

I purchased this car brand new in 2010 with 5 miles on the vehicle. The car was serviced regularly at my local dealership. I first reported that the transmission occasionally "bumped" when the vehicle had around 30, 000 miles. After checking out the car, I was told they didn't see an issue. I replaced the timing chain approximately 90,000 when I took her in for her 100,000 service. Within 4,000 miles of this complete check-up and very costly service, the transmission went out completely ! I contacted my local dealership and asked it there was a recall after discovering that numerous complaints had been made on the Malibu for this exact same issue. I then contacted gm and was told that there wasn't anything they could or were willing to do to help offset this cost etc. There is no way the transmission should go out completely in a 2010 vehicle that has only 100,000 miles on it that had just been checked over completely by the dealership. I realize that my car is 7 years old and would have loved for this to be covered completely, but honestly, I would have settled for a little compensation and genuine concern. I took my vehicle to aamco where is cost me in excess on $3,000 to have the broken wave plates replaced. I would like to know how many complaints have been filed against Malibu transmission issues and seek restitution if that is a possible outcome.

39 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2017

Almost caused a major accident when trying to accelerate into 65 mph traffic and rpm's red lined and I am not going anywhere and I almost get hit from behind with on-coming traffic. No 3rd or 5th gear. Also, found no reverse once I was able to get to safety. Turns out to be a failed 3-5-r wave plate. Scary stuff when you are red lining and going nowhere! sent information to Chevrolet as it turns out this is a known problem (cracked 3-5-r wave plate) for 2008-2009 and all these parts fail at less than 100k miles. Trouble I am having is that Chevrolet claims I do not have the defective wave plate in my 2010, yet the failure is exactly the same as the recall for earlier models. $4000 later and no help from gm. Yet, if you go on line, tons of people have the same wave plate problem at less than 100k miles for cars later than 2009. Very unsafe and dangerous situation. I was fortunate to not get rear ended by a car in merging traffic. Others may not be so lucky. Gm needs to admit the transmission design flaw with the wave plate and recall all Malibu cars from 2008-2012 before someone gets seriously injured. My claim is if I have the same wave plate issue as the recalled vehicles then either I do not have the new/improved wave plate specification or it's an inherent design flaw. Either way, gm should recall this problem for safety reasons. I have attached the sb for 2008-2009.

40 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

I was driving and then came to a stop to pull on a major highway. When I turned on the high way my Malibu wouldn't accelerate and acted as if it was in neutral, as a semi pulled up behind me I had to put it almost in a ditch so I wouldn't get hit. My mechanic says its the 3,5,r wave plate and that he looked at all the Malibu forums online and found out that many people have had this happen. I contacted gm and they told me there was nothing they could do. Never buying a chevy again.

41 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving the vehicle, it lost power and shut off. An hour later the vehicle was able to restart, but shut off again after approximately three minutes. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch wave plates (3rd, 5th, and 10th) failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 40,006.

42 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2016

While driving down the highway in traffic, the transmission started to act like it was going into neutral, slipping shifts without power in the flow of traffic. With intermittent transmission power this caused a serious situation in traffic. I was luckily able to get out of traffic and limp it home. This transmission has 94,000 miles on it. I took the car to the Chevrolet dealer, they took the transmission apart and the transmission suffered the 3-5-r wave plate failure, the plate has a flaw that causes it to break apart and just chew up your transmission, this part is a common failure that breaks and a full rebuild of the transmission is required. The mechanic told me this is an engineering flaw and the new parts that are used to rebuild the transmission are re-engineered to fix the problem. This is a 6t40 transmission, the bigger brother to this transmission the (6t70 and 6t75) has already been recalled for this engineering failure. Chevy know about this failure but is not recalling the transmission and refuses to fix it. It cost me 2500 dollars and its a driving hazard when the transmission goes out in traffic. This is a documented failure and hazard and needs to be recalled.

43 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2016

Vehicle hesistates and aquire high acceleration then jerks hard into first gear.

44 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to be restarted on the first attempt. The failure recurred and the vehicle failed to shift into gear. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission had a design flaw and needed to be rebuilt. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,673.

45 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2016

I took my car to the Chevrolet dealership to diagnose a check engine light. The car was suddenly losing power when accelerating and the reverse gear would, at times, fail to engage. The loss of power occurred at speeds above 20 mph. The dealership said that the problem is with the transmission's 3-5-reverse gear. After doing some research, I found that others have had this exact problem with this car. In 2015 gm issued a special policy (bulletin no. 14404, dated March 2015) for the 2007 to 2009 chevy Malibu (6 speed model) that covers the 3-5-reverse wave plate repair for 10 years or 120,000 miles. Also, I noticed on the diagnostic sheet that the dealership omitted the production date of the vehicle but it was obviously manufactured in 2009. The in-service date is 12/15/09. Based on the situation I have experienced with my car, they did not fix this defect when they introduced the 2010 model. I explained the above circumstances to the Chevrolet dealership and also to their corporate customer service representative but they refuse to cover the repairs for their manufacturing defect. Please help.

46 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2016

On August 21, 2016 I place my car in reverse to back up out of a parking space in a residential parking lot. Then I attempted to place my car into drive to pull off and the gear shift moved but my car started rolling backwards. So immediately stepped on my emergency brakes so the car would stop. I look at my gear shift and saw it was still in reverse. I played with the gears moving the level back and forth but the car remain in reverse so I turned my car off. When I went to turn the car back on, my car wouldn't start. Not knowing what to do but guessing it was something wrong with the gear shift, with the help of some citizens we tried to push the car back into a parking space. I then called a tow truck to come tow my truck to the closest Chevrolet dealership, lucky me was only 23 miles away. I had a friend come pick me up and take me home where I went online and began doing some research on this part. That's when I came across the recall ref this part . Unknown to me because I never received a letter. The next day the dealership called me and advise me that my transmission gear shift cable needed to be replace. They stated they didn't show any recalls on my VIN no#,so the cost was my responsibility. I called the NHTSA inquiring about everything relating to recall. They could only confirm there is a recall but my VIN is not included. Currently my vehicle is at the dealership waiting to be repaired because they have to order the part. I am very upset because everyone keeps stating recalls are based on the probability of the problem happening to certain cars. Well I am hear to say my VIN was not included but it happen to my car. I could has easily rolled into another vehicle or something else and hurt myself or someone else's property. I can't believe when you have 100's of thousand of cars recalled that the manufactured, in this case gm catches them all.

47 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

As I pulled out from work, I noticed that as the car should have been going into second or third gear, the rpm's just revved. I was heading down a hill at the time, and when it got to around 30-35 mph, the gear caught (thank goodness because it was starting to get a bit scary at that moment) and was able to be driven like normal. I had a few stop lights along the way home, and each time that I came to a complete stop and then started driving, the same thing would occur. As I got home, I called the nearest dealership, david stanley Chevrolet here in oklahoma city, to make an appointment to have it looked at. It sat in the garage for the duration of the weekend, and then I took it in this morning (Monday Aug. 22nd) for my appointment. As I was driving from my house to the dealership (around 8 miles) I noticed that it had gotten worse. A few times on the trip I did not think that it was going to make it the whole way there and then about a mile or so from the dealership, the check engine light came on. Later, I had to go in reverse after I arrived and found that the car would not shift into reverse. I dropped it off to have them do the diagnostic on it for $120. As I got home, my wife and I did some research on our car, trying to figure out what it might be while the diagnostic was taking place. I have to say that I was shocked by what I found. Website after website with comments from other chevy Malibu owners ranging from 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 describing the exact same issues I was having. All describing a "broken 35r wave plate" that results in a "loss of reverse gear, slipping or harsh 3rd or 5th gear shift". My heart sank as I read some of the comments showing what was needed to fix it and then, of course the cost. Technician called back and its a broken wave plate. This is a serious issue! this is a warning. . Someone will get hurt.

I am scared to drive it to the dealer ship come Monday becauuse I feel it is a danger for me and my family. It stalls with no warning what so ever it takes 20 minutes to start up after a stall out! it is not safe if my car is not in the recall how is it that my car has the same problems as other s?.

50 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

Takata recall my car started to slow down to 35 to 40 mph in the middle of traffic and I call to see if there was a recall and I was told for some models but not mine and it's doing the same as the other cars it's not safe.

51 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2016

Will not shift into park, checked and found plastic tabs that hold transmission shift cable together were broken as indicated in gm recall notice 12106c. Contacted dealer and was told this recall does not affect my car's VIN. (see attached photo).

52 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2016

I had to have over $2500 worth of work done to my car, which had something to do with some torque sensor and other parts - I see that there was a recall on other chevy Malibu's in previous model years. I am wondering how long this recall will take, my year is 2010 and not currently on the recall list. Prior to that, I had just paid $2000 for other work needed on this vehicle that was out of warranty. I've had so many issues w/this car. I have receipts but they are currently in storage - I am unable to upload them right now.

53 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

My 2010 chevy Malibu is having issues with the break lights working in reverse, the esc traction control sensor is going off. We have replaced the break light switch and it's still not working. I have seen multiple complaints regarding this issue. I am an avid chevy person, I have had the car in for all recalls and it happened about a year after. Car was in motion.

54 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2016

Was driving on the freeway and my transmission randomly went out. It was slipping with rpm going out of control. Once this started happening my speed and acceleration were not synchronizing so I had to exit. It was a very scary experience and then the check engine light went on. My car is fairly new and had been kept up to par so this came out of nowhere.

55 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2015

I am the owner of a 2010 chevy Malibu 2lt fwd. I bought the car in August of 2013, since then I have had to have the transmission rebuilt due to the fact that the manufacturer used a faulty 3-5 reverse wave plate. This is the same wave plate that caused significant damage to vehicles in the recall of similar vehicles in the 2007-2009 models. The dealership tried to make it seem like I was some sort of freeloader because I didnt not feel a car with 63000 miles on it should have a bad transmission. When all was said and done the 3-5 wave plate fell apart and shredded my transmission. The car stopped accelerating in traffic, this almost caused an accident not once not twice but 3 times. As the my children were in the vehicle the 1st 2 times the car stopped working properly, the very first time the dealer stated that even though the computer showed the fault codes in the computer from the check engine light stating there was a transmission error since they were not able to make them repeat it was fine. 2 weeks later it happened again and caused me to have to pay $500 after much complaining and pleading as my car was only 5 yrs old with less than 65000 miles on it, but all warantees had just conveniently expired. I feel that this must be looked into, this is the 2nd complaint that I have filed due to the fact that my car still does not run correctly and it has been docuemented that if it happens once it will happen again. These vehicles are not any safer than the earlier models and need to be looked into as were the 2007-2009 models with the same faulty transmission issues. If not then someone is going to be seriously hurt or killed. If I had not been attentive to my car my daughter or I would not be here, or a driver of the other vehicles that could have been involved. As cars should not just stop accelerating because of chevys neglect to see this problem.

56 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2015

On 9/15/15 I was making a right hand turn from a red light when I heard a loud pop or bang from my front end, when I stepped on the gas the car would not accelerate. My car was out of warranty so after complaining to the dealership and gm they finally had it towed to the dealer (after 2 weeks) to have it fixed or looked at. The check engine light that was on at the time reset it self but the 2codes found in the computer were the p0716 and p0717 transmission codes but since they were historic (which the check engine light has never come on except for the break light issue) the dealership said my car was fine. I picked it up and off I went. 12 days later the vehicle bucked making a left turn, and the vehicle would not accelerate and the check engine light was back on. I was forced to drive to the dealership when the vehicle would not come out of 1st gear. The transmission was shredded. They would not tell me what codes were in the computer this time. But as I stated was an issue with vehicles from 2007 -2009 the 3-5 wave plate broke and contaminated my transmission. The car is still not 100% running right. The car still hesitates and jumps and has a hard shift with issues accelerating.

57 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2015

2010 chevy Malibu. Brake system issues.

58 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2015

At 92,280 miles the vehicle's transmission malfunctioned on the commute home from work. The vehicle was fine during the trip to work, while in motion on the return home the transmission became unsafe. This was on a state highway at speeds ranging from 35-50 mph. The gears would not catch, resulting in high engine revs and unpredictable speed of travel. The vehicle would not accelerate past 30 mph or so. The same was true for reverse gear. The vehicle was just outside warranty period. Our local Chevrolet dealer at the time, ron marhofer was unhelpful in fixing the situation, they would not schedule a convenient appointment, and suggested we took the car elsewhere for a sooner repair. We needed the vehicle fixed ASAP, and ended up having the transmission replaced by a specialty shop at $2800. Because the vehicle was outside the warranty period, and we went to a 3rd party shop and not a gm dealer the gm claims department says we are out of luck, nothing they can do for us.

59 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving various speeds, the engine rpms rapidly increased, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The vehicle was merged to side of the road and parked on the shoulder where he switched from automatic to manual and proceeded driving. The shift lever failed to shift from second to third. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,924.

60 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2015

Esc and traction graphic and text alarms have been initializing intermittently while driving at various speeds since March 2015. On 4/7/2015 and again on 4/13/2015, after starting the car these two alarms initialized along with the power steering alarm and there was a loss of power steering. In each case, turning off the engine reset the alarms and the power steering restored. Loss of power steering at highway speeds particularly in a curve or while making a turn could cause a serious accident. I now feel very unsafe and insecure while driving this vehicle.

61 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2015

My car wouldn't move after shifting into reverse. I immediately called gm, because my car is till covered under the power tran warranty. Car gets towed to webb dealership( very poor customer service). They replace the transmission on Thursday 040/09. Receive a call from cathy with webb chevy stating and I quote. "mrs thurman the transmission was replaced successfully, but you have other problems the check engine light is on and the car will not get any power to accelerate. In order for us to diagnose the problem you would need to have another diagnostic test done for 119. 00". Get call today from cathy saying OH we did the diagnostic test and it came back its the throttle body needs replacing its no good and the cost will be 513. 41 plus tax. How could this be ?????? why isn't this covered under the power tran warranty??? the throttle body is related to the engine. . . I am confused and very upset and disappointed with gm poor services and vehicle and webb chevy.

62 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2015

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 65 mph, the check engine, electronic stability control, and traction control warning lights illuminated. The contact mentioned that the vehicle began to jerk but stopped at higher speeds. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed, but the cause of the failure was not found. On another occasion, the vehicle jerked before it stalled. The vehicle failed to start and was towed to the contact's residence. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

63 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

When my wife, two kids, and myself were driving to a friends house to take care of their pets, our chevy Malibu experienced a severe drop in power. We were driving at about 75 mph when all of a sudden our car dropped to 10 miles per hour and was violently shaking. I was lucky enough to pull off to the side of the road without being rear ended due to the sudden drop in speed. While on the side of the road I observed the traction control and check engine lights were on. Error messages displayed in the information screen to "check traction control" and "reduced engine power". Also while I was on the shoulder of the interstate, my car was attempting to jerk forward with the brake pedal fully pressed. I had placed my car in park and turned my car off fearing that at any moment the car could take off without me wanting it to. After we were calmed down, I turned the car back on and their was no more jerking motion, the traction control light was not lit, but the check engine light was still on. I fear for my families safety while in our only family car with this issue considering the drastic drop in power and speed while traveling at highway speeds.

64 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2015

Vehicle was traveling down the road and just stopped moving. Found that a lot of gm products have 3-5-r clutch wave plate problems. This is very dangerous if this were to occur at a high rate of speed on a busy highway.

65 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle would jerk, the esc and the traction control warning lights illuminated. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the map sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,492. Ne.

66 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

Drove car around town with no problems, came home, put car in park on level street and left it running for 2 minutes, got back in car put in reverse and noticed car shifter was a little stiff. In the process of putting my car in the garage, going from drive to revers a couple of times, I noticed it took quite a bit of strength to get shifter to move from one gear to another. I went in the house and got online to see if anyone else had the same problem and if there was a recall for this. I did see there is a general recall from gm for several vehicles, my year and make included. The problem is the tabs on the shift linkage come off and not only cause the shifter to be real stiff, but cause the little silver button on the side of the shifter to stick and not come back out after pressed making it impossible to change gears, causes is the shifter to appear to be in "park" but it really isn't and the car ends up rolling after the driver leaves it, people have had problems getting their keys to come out of the ignition because the car wasn't actually in park even though the shift lever was in the park position. I called the Chevrolet dealer in watsonville, CA and they said it sounds like my car does have a problem with the shift linkage, but my car wasn't on the recall list, and even though my car only has 18,100 miles on it, it is out of warranty, so I would have to pay for this fix. I then reported the problem to gm with senior advisor daniel, operator #21110, please refer to case #71-1421244188. I feel my car should be included in the recall since it was experiencing one of the same problems described in the recall. Please look into this and get back to me. I would like a contact person I can work with on this. I would like to avoid safety problems for myself and others.

67 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. In addition, while in reverse, the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.

68 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2014

I was stopped to wait on oncoming cars to pass to turn left onto a street. As I was about to turn with my childern in the car the steering wheel locked up and would not turn. If, my steering wheel would have not been turned already, as I was getting ready to turn, I would have been hit on the right side where my child was sitting. I had no option but to drive up on the curb. This is the same situation as the 2008 and 2009 model Malibu's which have a recall on them for steering:electric power assist system gm's recall #14v15300 recalled 3/31/14. Obviously this recall needs to be added to the 2010 model since it is still occuring. I took my car to the freeland chev. Where they had to replace the entire steering column due to the bad torque sensor. This costed me 689. 00 to replace, I feel gm should take responsibility for this and add the 2010 model Malibu to the recall list so that I can be reimbursed for their error and so their customers that put trust in purchasing their vehicles are safe. To note I have contacted and spoke with several reps at gm none of which offered any type of help with this matter.

69 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

I was trying to reverse my 2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS when I realized I couldn't get my car out of park. The shift cable in my transmission is broken! this same shift cable that was replaced during the first round of recalls back in early 2013 is now broken!.

70 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

Shaking, with the traction control and engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. Contact also stated that the gas pedal sank to the floor. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who stated the at the throttle body and connector needed to be replaced to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 53143. Rg.
