#1 3rd brake light leaking into back seat and trunk manufacture bolts backed out and/or missing, can also cause water to get into the brake light which tends to cause 3rd brake light failure, increasing risk of a crash. #2 gear shift lever inner lock blocking the ability for user to shut the vehicle off, this can also cause the gear shift lever to indicate vehicle is in park, but the transmission may actually be in another gear. This can lead to damage to the transmission or increase the risk of a crash. A recall has been made for chevy Malibu 2016-2020 but my VIN was not included. While my vehicle is experiencing these issues. Issue was confirmed by an independent service center. Shift to park message pop up on dash when attempting to shut vehicle off unsure of exact start date but started a few months ago. I have since been doing my research on issues and their solutions.

I brought my vehicle into a Chevrolet center near me to have a manufacturers warranty fix done to my vehicle on 04/17/2021, as the power steering had failed and I was able to get this fixed for free. When I turned my vehicle on and noticed the power steering notification on my dash, I tried to back my car out of where I was parked and move my wheel, but could not move the wheel. When the part was replaced, I was told that there were still sensors on my dash indicating that I needed the esc and stability traction control serviced for my car. According to the Chevrolet dealership, this had nothing to do with the special policy fix and not something they would be fixing for me. After checking the NHTSA. Gov for any recalls on my 2012 chevy Malibu, I found one from may 2014 that described exactly the problem I was having with my vehicle: loss of vehicle stability traction control, cruise control and random illumination of brake lights. I contacted chevy once again about this recall, to which they said there was no recall for the vehicle, and if there was it was already fixed. Not only was this completely unprofessional and lacking concern of safety for my child and I, I do not know where to turn to for this to be remedied. Attached is the ticket for the initial fix I had done.

My vehicle has about 62,000 miles and the center rear brakes light just inside the rear window is not working. It seems very dim. Failed state safety inspection. Not an accident.

I took my car for inspection and was informed that the brake lights do not turn off, but continuously illuminate. I then took to car for repair and was advised that a recall was issued on the brake problem and is outstanding on the vehicle. I was advised to contact a gm dealer to have brakes repaired at no cost. The recall number is 130360. Upon contacting them to make an appointment, dealer advised it is not covered under recall. I called another dealer & he stated it was covered, but work is done. I was informed it was not completed yet. Later, checked NHTSA website and it appears changes were made on the VIN as of today. I really need to have this issued repaired so that my car can pass inspection and be re-registered. I have attached inspection and repair diagnosis invoices below.

The center brake light doesn't work. I put in a new led light assembly in and it still doesn't work.
The brake lights illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed. The brake lights fail to illuminate when the brake pedal is pushed. This has been an on going problem and we only realize it still exists when one of our family is following the 2010 Malibu in another car. We had brought the vehicle in to a Chevrolet service center in the past and were charged for a "repair". When we again noticed the problem we brought the vehicle into a firestone service center and they charged us for a "repair". We just noticed the problem again and now are afraid to drive the vehicle. A search of the VIN shows no unrepaired recalls so we are not sure if the original owner had already brought it in (we are the second owner) or if this particular VIN was not thought to be affected. Regardless, it sounds like a known problem and we are hoping not to have to pay a third time and then still have an issue. Please let us know our options. Thank you in advance.
I have experienced multiple occasions throughout 2020 where the brake lights malfunctioned. The brake lights will illuminate on their own without depression of the brake pedal and the brake lights will turn off upon depressing the brake pedal. Cruise control will also not function when this malfunction is occurring. I am convinced this is the same problem that prompted a recall back in 2014. My car was repaired through the recall campaign, however, I'm convinced the problem has returned. This issue has occurred multiple times while I was driving and it poses a safety risk and raises the possibility of someone rear-ending me if my brake lights aren't operating as they should. In my attached photo, you will see the brake control module. Simply shaking it or pushing it in and out seems to rectify the problem but only temporarily.
I first noticed the problem on my 2016 Malibu LS when going through a car wash. I'm not sure when exactly the issue happened, but according to the body shop it appears to be faulty designing. The water and chemicals were leaking at the rear window. Heavy rains would also result in the car leaking non-stop. I took the car in and the found that the third brake light was not secured fully and water was spilling through there. Apparently it was lose to the point where it didn't take much to take the light out. I was informed that this was a known problem for other years but my car wasn't included in the recall. If the problem existed with my car I'm sure others are having the same problem. Water was also getting into the trunk and now I have a huge mold/mildew problem. Additionally, they first thought the leak was coming from the side panel windows as the adhesive to put those windows in was faulty.
Since 2018 my brake lights will come on without touching the brakes. When this happens, my cruise control won't work. I can tap the brakes and they'll go off for about 3-5 seconds and then come back on. After awhile, the esc and traction control lights will pop up on my dashboard. I've had the sensor replaced/reset 5-6 times since August of 2018, with the most recent June 2020. It worked fine that day, but the next day they all came back on. Today, it was fine, but later will probably be another story. ,.

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the rear center brake light failed to illuminate while driving 40 mph. The contact mentioned that the center brake light was repaired twice. The contact also stated that intermittently the air bags and power steering warning lights were illuminated while driving. Additionally, after starting the vehicle, the steering wheel failed to operate as designed. The vehicle was turned off and restarted and the vehicle regained steering functionality. The contact stated that occasionally two attempts at restarting the vehicle were needed before the steering wheel operated as designed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed however, the technician was unable to retrieve a failure code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 113,000.
While driving the check traction light comes on dash and the brake lights up red while driving without the brake applied.
While the vehicle is in motion the dash will display the traction control service light and the screen will read service traction service esc, the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not pushed and turn off when it is pushed. The cruise control also can not be engaged. The brake switch was replayed however all problems came back 2 weeks later. All these issues have been on going.
Over a period of 7 days mid-Nov-2019, brake lights would work backwards. Depressing pedal, brake lights off. Pressing gas pedal brake lights on. Within a few minutes, service esc/traction msg. Shut car off, restart, everything worked fine. Started as weather turned cold/damp. Happened both stationary and moving. Brought it to dealer, "could not replicate problem".
The brake lights come on at any given time even when you aren't pressing on the brake pedal. When you press on the brake pedal sometimes the brake lights do not come on at all. I have replaced wheel hub/bearing combos, along with adding electrical grease to the connector for the light controls, nothing fixes this issue.
My brake lights are coming on by themselves and when I press the brakes it goes off but my brake light want work at all it a big safe issue.
Brake lights illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights do not illuminate when the pedal is pushed. ; difficulty moving the gear shifter out of the "park" positions without pushing the brake. Gm says there was never a recall, but a service bulletin was issued in regards to this problem.

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the brake light in the back, at the top of the trunk (the third light) did not come on. The light sometimes came on and off, especially if the trunk was banged on. The vehicle was taken to the miller brothers Chevrolet of ellicott city, located 9035 baltimore national pike, ellicott city, MD 21042, where it was diagnosed that the third brake light assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. Fe.
Brake lights on rear window come on without hitting the break pedal and go off when depressing brake pedal. The esc warning also comes on intermitently.
Brake lights constantly stay on 24/7. Service esc, tracition, and svc tire monitor lights stay on dash. Interior lights dim in and out if the window buttons are pushed. Passenger door glitches sometimes will not open from inside nor out. Locking unlocking still nothing. Etc. . . Etc. . Oil consumption!!! I'm losing 100$s overtime constantly having to put a quart in due to losing a quart in a days time like makes no sense.
The brake lights illuminate and stay on while driving when the brake pedal is not pressed. The brake lights turn off when the brake pedal is pressed. The car routinely displays "service esc" and " service traction" messages.
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while his son was driving at approximately 35 mph when his brakes light were illuminated with the stabilty light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer ( ron norris Buick gmc1350 s washington Ave, titusville, FL 32780) for a diagnosis and repairs. The diagnosis was a replacement stability control module. However the failure reccured. The manufacturer was not notified of this failure. The contact's dad is refrencing this failure to (NHTSA campaign number: 14v252 components service brakes, hydraulic, electrical system, exterior lighting, vehicle speed control, electronic stability control) the approximate failure mileage wass 100,000 tp.
Brake lights flicker while driving when not pressing on the brakes. Ecs and check engine lights keep coming on and the car is jerking while driving.
Esc , traction control lights come on. Then rear brake lights work opposite of standard brake light design. The rear brake lights come on while driving. When brake pedal is depressed, the brake lights turn off. This has been going on for two years now. The dealership just patches the repair. The repair only lasts a few weeks.
Electrical-I was following someone who was driving my Malibu, and we came up to a stoplight. I noticed that my brakes lights didn't illuminate when he was stopping, the light turned green and we proceeded down the road. I then saw the brakes lights going on and off a couple of times. We were not coming up on a light, nor was there anyone in front of him. When we got to our destination, I asked if he was tapping the brakes when we pulled away from that red light, and he said no, not once. This issue continues to happen, almost causing me to get into an accident. Steering- the power steering will just stop working when I am driving. It does this often. To correct it, I have to pull over and turn the car off and then back on. Sometimes I have to do this a few times right in a row before it corrects the problem. I have looked up recalls for my year vehicle. Currently, there are recalls for both of these issues, just not for my VIN. I cannot help but think that if the same exact issues have been happening with other vehicles from the same year as mine and they have gotten the recalls, that there is a very good chance that mine should probably be included in these recalls as well. Those recalls are 14v153000 and 14v252000.
All three brake lights stay on when the car is in drive, reverse, or park. When I step on the brake it will shut off then go on again. When I release the brake the lights will shut off then go back on a couple minutes later.

Even after brake light recall from 2014, I continue to have problems with the brake lights illuminating when I'm not pressing the brake pedal, and turning off when I press the brake pedal. I've had this problem 'fixed' several times now, and it keeps happening. Most recently, in January 2019, and now 6 months later, it is happening again. While I'm driving (and not always while I'm braking), the service traction, service esc, esc off warnings come on my info display, as well as the traction control image. From that moment on, while I'm driving and not pressing the brake pedal, my brake lights are all illuminated. When I lightly press on the brake, the lights go off, unless I continue to press harder on the pedal, and then they'll come on again. This is such a hazard while I'm driving that I don't even want to go anywhere. Why does this keep happening? if this was supposedly fixed with the recall, it absolutely wasn't. I've seen other people report the same issue on the online forums, so I know I'm not alone with this problem. It is a major safety issue and needs to be fixed now! I will be going back to the dealer who did the repair in January to get this fixed again, but I don't understand why I should need to. It shouldn't continue to happen if it is really being fixed. Something else is wrong with this vehicle.
I purchased my Malibu from a friend who bought the car brand new. He told me they had the recall fixed. The problem came back last year, March of 2018, I called gm they said there wasn't a recall and that the recall had been fixed. I said maybe so but the problem is back. I was told the only thing I could do was to take it to a chevy dealer and have them run diagnostics on it, which costs about $150 that I had to pay for. Why when we know what the problem is?! I took it to a shop, June 2018, where they changed the brake pedal switch, I still had the problem. I took it back to the shop where the poor guy worked on it for 3 hours, trying to figure it out. He finally just cleaned and re-greased the plug and it has been fine up until yesterday, may 10,2019, and my problem is back. Also, my third brake light works whenever it feels like it.
Warning lights on dash contantly flash: esc, brake lights, tire sensors, tire traction, engine reduce speed. The car turns off while actively driving (in motion) , sometimes will start up in neutral or park right away and sometimes not. On I-95 and city street. Dealership stated the timing chain need to be done so it got done and car still doing the same thing. Sensors also has been replaced.
Tl-the contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu e2. The contact stated that when the brake pedal is depressed there are no warning light's illuminated. The vehicle was taken into the dealer mike savoie Chevrolet 1900 w maple rd, troy, mi 48084 (877) 819-1038 where a diagnosed test was performed and determined that the brake lights needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware and informed the contact that his VIN was not included and provided the contact with case number 9-555-18878406. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. Ck.

The esc light comes on and tells me it needs serviced. When this happens the brake lights stay on even if my foot is not on the brake. It also has a problem with the gear shift when trying to pull it out of park. This also disables my cruise control. This issue happens sometimes as soon as I start the car or after driving for a bit. I've taken the car in to get the problem fixed. They replaced the brake sensor and that worked for a week then the esc light came back on and the brake lights stayed on.
When starting my car, I attempt to take it out of park and I need to step on my brakes as if I am slamming them just to move my car out of park. My brake lights are reversed, I noticed this at night when a car almost hit me. I thought it was the brake sensor so I changed it and that didn't fix the issue. Since then 3 cars have almost hit me because of this braking issue. While driving my traction light also comes on, it states service traction, service esc and makes my car shake.
Brake lights not functioning correctly . Brake lights illuminate at the opposite times. Meaning lights come on when not touching the brake pedal yet go off when depressing the brake pedal. This brake light malfunction is intermittent. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer 6 times in last 9 years for repair. Chevy has a service bulletin on how to fix and dealer does repairs for free. The repair lasts not long before I notice they are again malfunctioning. Took vehicle to dealer twice so far in 2019 and each time the brake lights worked perfectly and they could do nothing. Today they are not functioning ,but by time I get an appointment and arrive at the dealer the lights will function correctly. But they will fail again this cycle has gone on for years and chevy is aware of this issue . The dealer service bulletin has them putting dielectric grease and a wire harness on the body control module connection . Which they have done at least 3 times . Please issue a recall as I see 09 Malibu s driving down the highway with brake lights on routinely and the web has tons of people complaining. You can have my car to test if you need it to prove the problem exists . Once before you took my chevy tahoe 97 to prove a power steering issue . Date listed below is the last date I took car to dealer for repair , but they could not get the brakes to malfunction yet a day prior they malfunctioned. In next question it asks how many miles on car when happened . I put in the first time I took it to the dealer in 2010.
Loss of power steering assist while driving. Brake lights go on when driving and do not go on when braking.
Brake lamp recall for these models do not work. I noticed the issue recently while driving home from work at around 55 mph at night. My brake lights are on, while my foot is off of the brake pedal. When I place my foot on the brakes, the brake lights go off. This is a serious driving hazard. I've taken the car to get the recall handled, but noticed this morning, that my brake lights are still illuminating when my foot is off the brake pedal.
