7 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/02/2013

2001 Chevrolet Malibu suddenly accelerated while the brakes were depressed. While in park, the rpms jump randomly between 500 and 3500. When placed into drive the vehicle would gain speed to 45-65 mph on flat ground with foot off of brake and accelerator. Replaced throttle control sensor -- didn't solve the issue. Very disapointing, given that the car was always well maintained and that I recently changed transmission oil, spark plugs, battery, fuel pump, engine oil, a bunch of other parts and still have 3/4 tank of gas. . .

11 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

Approximately the first of July 2007 our vehicle began accelerating rapidly. My husband had to apply the brakes to stop the speed. Even with his foot off the gas pedal, it would accelerate up to 65 mph and he had to apply the brakes very strongly to slow it down. When he would take his foot off the brakes, it would continue to accelerate. This did not happen 100% of the time, but was more apt to happen after the vehicle had warmed up. It did not cause an accident, due to his careful driving. We took it in to the repair garage on 7-24-07 and they determined that the throttle position sensor was faulty and needed replacing which they did and we have not had any problem with it since then. We thought we should register this complaint in case other like vehicles have had this same problem.

12 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

My 2002 chevy Malibu suffers from sudden acceleration. Most of the articles I have read on the internet state that they were unable to replicate the results. On my car, I can reproduce the results anytime. The first time this happened, I thought that maybe I had pressed the gas instead of the brake, but I quickly realized that even after releasing the accelerator pedal, the car continued to accelerate on its own. Fortunately, for me, there were no cars on the road when this happened. The second time, I was pulling into a gas station and had to turn off the car while it was still moving to kill the engine. The third time, I was in the city and I know that I must have really worn out my brakes. The problem still exists and I have called gm to let them know about it. They offered little help and only suggested me that I take the car into the dealership to have it checked. That too, they said I would have to pay for the check-up. I would like some feedback as what I can do to resolve this matter and also, I would like to know if there was a resolution, if any, in cases that were similar to mine.
