Tire Problems of Chevrolet Malibu - part 2

The tires are cracking and splitting abnormally. The ones that are under 3 yrs/36,000 we have been taking to dealerships. Several dealerships have not been willing to replace these defective tires under warranty. Firestone is only replacing them by prorating the tires. (tiresize: 9215/60r15).

Tires are cracking and splitting abnormally. The ones that are under 3 yrs/36,000 we have been taking to dealerships. Consumer had vehicle for one month and had balanced tires twice, while driving over 55 mph the vehicle shakes, consumer pulled into traffic while driving 50 mph, vehicle fishtailed and experienced rollover, causing one injury, possibly faulty tires, firestone affinity touring t-2, p215/60r15, claim 53-c796-229.

Insurance agent took in one of company's vehicle to have tires checked for cracks between tread. Inspected the tires, and firestone confirmed that there was a problem. They would replace tires at no charge to consumer. Chevrolet, Malibu, 1998 with original tires, size p215/60r15, and 34,400 miles on them. Dot number was w2mwaa158, tire dealer stated tires experienced weather cracking.

Consumer had inspected tires and found out that cracks had developed between treads which could lead to tread separation. Chevrolet, Malibu, 1999, 215/60r15.

Failure discover by firestone when changing oil.

On 3/1100 at about 6:35pm, I was coming from dallas to houston. Just before wyllis my car went totally out of control after my right front tire went to pieces. According to witnesses,my car was all over both highways,almost been killed by two 18 wheelers and altimately crashing on a guard on the south direction. I lost conscience and when I came to I saw alot of people over me and then taken to the first emergency. After that I was sent to another hospital emergency & after 3 days in the intensive care I was in a room where I stayed about 9 days. I sustained a fractured neck,open scal,broken right-shoulder,knee and a very bruised & swollen left wrist but not broken. Given the facts (which can all be substantiated by my dealer's records) the maintenance of my car and tires were up to the minute. We were told nothing was left from the tire and the pictures taken show the bear well of the tire all twisted. There has never been any doubt in my mind that I came very close to been killed,as a result of a bad tire. We were towing our Malibu behind a motorhome, had just pulled on to i75 after an hour stop at a truck stop. We walked around the vehicle before leaving the truck stop and all tires appeared to be in good condition. Fortunately two passing vehicles motiioned us to pull over. Vehicle parked. Tire picked up tack. Noticed cracks just below the tread. Was jagged along 3/4 of left rear tire. Checked other tires & cracks on them, but not as bad. The tires have failed to hold air properly for any lenghth of time since originally purchasing the vehicle. It was recently noticed that the tires have gone completely bald in the center of the tire. In contacting the service manager at dave heinrich Chevrolet in lockport, NY, we are told that this is a common problem with the Malibus in that gm states that these tires were not designed for this car. Gm has since issued a bulletin stating that these tires should only be inflated to 28# in front and 26# in back, which varies from the manufacturer suggestion. Gm refuses to address this issue and the tires appear to be unsafe, although the service manager states that they "are probably safe". Gm says that our only remedy would be to contact an authorized firestone dealer, even though gm sold the car with the defective tires---gm says that they are "not defective". Please advise. Front 2 tires wore out prematurely, only had 25, 756 miles and was rotated 5-6000 miles. ( dot number: unknown tire size: p215/6015 ).

While traveling at 30-40 mph right rear tire, with rim and hub still attached, came off and almost caused vehicle to go over a bridge. Dealer/manufacturer were not contacted at this time.

Front tires completely worn in the middle. Was told by chevy dealership that they won't replace. Car makes a cupping sound and front wheel bearings have been replaced 4 times in less than 3 months. ( dot number: tire size: p215/60r15 ).

The tires are 80,000 mile tires that need to be replaced at 35000 due to premature wear on the center rib. The center rib is bald, but the outer ribs have well over half of the original tread left. This was first noticed at about 12000 miles, so we ran the tires at 25psi to try to correct center wear. The inflation specs on the car door call for 29psi front, 26psi rear. We have kept the tires rotated and air pressure check at regularly scheduled times. The tires are becoming unsafe, and need to be replaced. The dealer will not warranty the tires, and firestone claims that the tire is only a 40,000 mile rated tire. The firestone customer service rep stated that the oem affinity tires were only 40,000 mile tires, but if I were to buy new affinity tires from a firestone dealer, I would get an 80,000 mile rated tire. The dealer checked the car for proper front and rear adjustment, and claims that the car is not at fault. We were given a 98 model Malibu to drive while they checked our car that had 17,600 miles, and we noticed that the front tires on this car were worse than on our car, but the back tires were not quite as bad. It looked as though the tires had never been rotated on this car. Of course, the dealer states that if we had brought the car in 20,000 miles sooner, he could have done something for me. Of course he could say that now that it is already past. Gm and firestone both think it is the responsibility of the other to be responsible for the tires. Furthermore, the dealer's service dept suggested I run the tires at 35psi and tried to send me home with the tires inflated to that amount of air pressure. All four tires are wearing in the center strip. Consumer is having some problems when making emergency stops.

Tire failures. 3 different flats between 8-12-98 and 8-22-98. Vehicle purchased 6-10-98.

I was passing another car, when my car,started going out of control, I managed to get over top the right lane and on to the shoulder,when I ,got out to check out what was wrong . I noticed ,t here was'nt any rubber on the rim accept, on side and pieces of steel was sticking out all over. A car across the 4-lane interstate ,had to stop & pick up the hunk of tire, to get it off the road. The tire damnaged the drivers side rear fender, when it came apart. The dealer where ,I bought my car ,replaced that tire and repaired the damage to the car,as it was under warranty . ( dot number: tire size: p215160r15 ).

Chevrolet Malibu 2002, tires worn at 9,000 miles. The dealer replaced the tires with no questions asked. At 29000 mile the tires were badly worn again. This time the dealer refused to replace the tires indicating that the wear was the consumer's fault. The vehicle was taken to a tire dealer who informed the consumer that the tires were imperfect.

Vehicle with original tires skids on wet road. (p215-60r15 93 t m+s, tpc spec 1139 ms, touring t2 afinity). Yh.

All four tires have cracks, all around the perimiter of innner and outer thread channels. Called firestone said water could possibly get into steel belts causing them to rust and tires to fail. Firestone also said that a firestone dealer would pro-rate thread wear, how can a manufacturer's defect cost a consumer money. Also I have personal;y seen the same defect on quite a few other chevy mailbus, with the same tires, maybe this should become a recall before one of these tires do fail at high speed. Thank you.
