Side/window Air Bag Problems of Chevrolet Monte Carlo

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. While the contact's spouse was backing the vehicle up, the driver side air bag deployed without warning. There were no injuries. There is a recall on the air bag, but not the deployment. The recall number was unknown. The current mileage was 90,407 and failure mileage was 79,000.

I have had this same problem since shortly after purchase of my vehicle. (purchased new September 2001. . . Has 47,000 miles in 2006. ) the leather on the driver's side air bag keeps pulling away from the seat and exposing the seat. The dealer has looked at it numerous times and tucked the leather back in, but that lasts less than an hour before it is exposed again. I am concerned the air bag may deploy without warning - or - not deploy properly during an accident. I even had an upholstery company look at it and they said they couldn't do anything without disconnecting the air bag, etc. And there would be no guarantee it would hold after repair. I declined that offer. Research shows many, many complaints on this same problem.

I guess I'm the lucky one my car seems to have almost every complaint listed. The side air bag continuously tries to escape from it's seat. Several months ago my blinkers started to work only as they felt like it, having read consumer complaints, I tried turning on the hazard lights when they wouldn't function, this would remedy the blinker problem for a short time. However, now my blinkers don't work at all and my hazards don't either. About the same time my car began shutting off at various speeds with no warning. Then I went about 1 1/2 months with no stalling problems. This week my car has shut off daily making it very difficult to steer, stop and feel safe, especially with no hazards. The car will go to the chevy dealer today, we'll see what they say. I think that it's important to note that when the car shuts down you often don't have enough coasting time to get safely to the side of the road, especially on a 3 or more lane highway.

Driver side airbag comes out from seat showing plastic casing, had fixed twice but still pulls away.

The instrument panel had been lighting up certain components intermittently. While driving, the passenger and drivers side air bag deployed. The dealer had been contacted. Please describe further. Air bags deployed twice.

While parked the vehicle's driver side air bag deployed inadvertently. Two weeks later the passenger side air bag deployed inadvertently while driving. The cause has yet to be determined. Please provide any additional information.

Driver's side air bag is protruding from assembly. Vehicle checked by dealer who replaced it. Two days later, air bag protruded from assembly again. Consumer very concerned that air bag could deploy without warning.

Consumer states that the side air bag cover is continueously coming off. Contacted dealer and the dealer cannot find a solution to the problem. Ts.

Vehicle was involved in a 55 mph collision in which a deer was hit head-on, passengers side air bag deployed, but drivers side air bag deployed partially, cause unknown. Consumer states that the drivers side air bag fully deployed later at the body shop, consumer would like information as to why this happened.

Consumer was traveling about 60mph on highway when another vehicle veered into consumer's lane. Upon impact, driver's side airbag didn't deploy. Dealership was aware of problem.

Driver's side air bag falls out of seat,leather replaced, screw showing,leather buckled, still not corrected.

Flap that conceals side airbag on driver's side is continually coming off. This concerns consumer, and is receiving no satisfaction from dealership in resolving this issue. Consumer states that the dealership tucks the leather material on the seat under the airbag, however after about an hour it is exposed again.

Consumer's airbag didn't go off upon impact. Vehicle was hit from behind & knocked into the rear of another vehicle. Pontiac manufacturer has inspected vehicle, but hasn't given any input to the problem.

Another vehicle ran into the consumer's vehicle at a high rate of speed, and driver's side/ passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.

Passenger side air bag blew apart upon impact, resulting in chemical burns. Dup of 517398, added on 25-Feb-98.

Involved in a collision and the air bags deployed but the passenger side air bag exploded and the chemicals in the air bag burned the face and neck of the driver.

Driver side airbag assembly installed incorrectly. Have a fear the bag will deploy upon entering car with my small children standing right in front of the opening to get in the back seat. Also, have a great fear that the airbag maynot deploy when necessary. I bought a new car and general motors has told me they will not investigate this problem any further. The dealer has done a repair once but the frame around the airbag is still detaching itself and exposing the inside potion of the driver seat. I understand from the dealer that they have received a bullentin about this problem and are stilling selling 2002 models with the same problem and gm will not fix the problem. I feel this is a real safety issue due to the fact it involves an airbag that may or maynot deploy at any time.

Passenger's side airbag is defective. Vehicle was checked by dealer, who stated consumer needed to do maintenance on airbags.
