Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 49 problems related to door latch (under the latches/locks/linkage category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I purchased this vehicle in new form from gallucci Chevrolet in medina, OH. While still under warranty, the third door handle used to open the rear third door broke approximately three times. While still under warranty, I took it in the dealership to have it repaired on each occasion. When the vehicle ran out of warranty, the third door handle again broke, and to date has not been repaired due to cost. This incident apparently is widely known to be a problem with chevy, as the mechanics told me this is common in my vehicle, and upon speaking with others with the same vehicle, nearly every one has had the door handle break. This prohibits a third passenger from entering or exiting the vehicle or for me to open the back seat for groceries, etc.

My 3rd door latch has failed again!!! this is the 2nd time. The dealership I bought my truck from told me they keep a box load of these latches in stock because they break so often. Bad design!!!! chevy needs to step up and provide a reliable replacement. If my son was back there and there was an emergency I would be unable to open the 3rd door.
Door bushings are worn-out, door pins do not rotate in them and have elongated and cut through the side of the bushings, making it hard to open and close doors.

The 3rd door handle/latch on our extended cab 2003 chevy s-10 recently broke for the fourth time. This occurs approximately every 8-10 months. The vehicle is used for personal use only. The 3rd door is opened/closed approximately 10 times a week. The dealer has worked with us on this and we do not believe that it is a service department issue. We believe that the part is either designed improperly or manufactured from substandard material. We are deeply concerned that this is a safety issue. If a person or animal was being transported in the extended cab area and the handle/latch failed in an emergency where a speedy exit from the vehicle was critical, loss of life could occur. We believe this problem is important and requires an immediate solution. *updated 12/12/07 updated 12/12/07.

Third door on my 2002 chevy S10 pickup will not open, it was been fixed twice, and once again I am not able to open this door without extreme difficulty. Should I need easy access it would next to impossible to gain access quickly.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet S10. The contact stated that the lower hinge pin on the passenger side door continued working its way upward which caused the door to rattle abnormally. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer in regards to the issue. In addition, the contact stated that the plastic rear door handle continued to fracture from the vehicle. The door handle was replaced with the same type of plastic door handle. The contact was concerned because there was not a metal replacement handle available and believed the plastic would only continue to fracture. The failure mileage was 64,720 and the current mileage was 84,780.
Third door handle broke again 3 times so far and the dealer said I need to push the door in while I pull the latch. I did a search on the internet and found two companies that are offering replacements but I feel that I should not have to purchase not factory parts for a factory part.
The third door handle has broken twice in one week , all under normal operation, part was replaced but broke instantly.
3 times my 3rd door latch has had to be replaced on my 2002 S10 pickup.
The third door latch has failed three times on my 2002 S10 Chevrolet pickup VIN:1gcs19w629114870 as follows: 1st at 10,842 miles, 2nd around 40,000 miles repaired on 10,842 miles and the third time today at 57,175. I believe this presents a sever safety hazard should there be a fire and someone was in the rear seat because they may not get out as the door will not open. This door latch is non-metal and apparently prone to failure.
I simply tried to open the third door to my chevy s-10 extended cab and the plastic door handle completely broke off. I have not been able to open my door since then.

Drivers door latch has failed. No longer can latch, this could have been a issue at highway speeds of door coming open or rounding a curve. On 9-13-04 my 3rd door latch was also replaced due to breakage of handle . Now to this date I have to replace the passenger door latch with the same failure of drivers door. The electronic system is not great and plastic latches. Some type of spring failure from dirt and water intrusion.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet S10. The contact stated that the handle on the third door is made of plastic. The plastic is not strong enough and has been replaced three times. He notified the dealer on all three occasions to have the handle replaced, but the failure persists. The dealer and the manufacturer stated that this will be the last time they replace the handle free of charge. The contact feels that this is a serious hazard because one would be unable to exit the vehicle due to the vulnerability of the handle. The current mileage is 27,000 and failure mileage was unknown.
Third door latch breaks occasionally, preventing access, or egress to the rear seat. Latch must then be replaced before door can be opened. A person in that rear seat would be trapped. Part: door latch and handle replaced; old parts not available.
The handles on both sides of the seat broke very shortly after we purchased the vehicle. Also the third door handle has been replaced by us already and is broken again, also the third door bracket at the top my husband had to weld because we could not find one this bracket broke and the door flew open while he was driving. The spring in the hinge door broke off and now the drivers side door is not opening properly. We have had problems with this ever since we bought it.
Door handle failure.
The handle on the third door of my 2001 extended cab chevy S10 broke off. It occurred with normal use. There is no other method in which to open the door. I cannot figure out why it was made of plastic. This is definitely a manufacturing default.
Tailgate straps broke when opening tailgate causing damage to tailgate when it hit bumper also drive side recliner lever broke and third door latch broke.
I have a 2001 Chevrolet s-10 pick-up with 4-doors and 4wd. Vehicle has been well taken care of with no damage. The metal door post frame where the door latch is attached is disintegrating due to what appears to be a very thin metal section. It appears that the door may soon come open during a right turn due to a failure of the dorr latch mechanism. This may cause substantial injury and vehicle damage.
When opening the third rear door the inside door handle broke off. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
The handle that opens the door, which was orchased brand new, broke. There was no inner handle from the door. This handle broke at least two times. The consumer stated that the handle was made of lightweight plastic.
Latch on the 3rd door breaks and the door will not open. This is a very weak component.
This vehicle has light metal latches on the seat backs and extended cab door. These latches broke, causing the third door to swing open and the seats to wobble. The back of the driver and passenger seats could not be adjusted without these latches. The dealer has examined the vehicle three times, attempting to repair the problem. This type of vehicle only had an extended cab door behind the driver's seat. The dealer repaired the drivers seat. The passenger seat adjustment had broken within the first week of the drivers side repair.
The door latch keeps breaking off of the 3rd door.
The door latch on the third door breaks away from the internal mechanism. Materials are too weak.
While driving at various speeds without warning the inside third door handle snapped and would rattle after hitting a minor bump in the road. Cause has yet to be determine. Dealer will be notified.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet s-10. The contact stated the plastic third rear door latch would continuously fracture from the vehicle. The contact would have the latch replaced and after the fall and winter seasons, the latch would fracture again. The dealer advised the failure was caused by the material used in the design of the latch. The failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 75,000.
The third latch broke on the vehicle. After being fixed the door opened, but will not open or release at the bottom catch. Scc.
Chevrolet S10- #1 both seat reclining latches have broken off (cheap pot metal used in latch). Dealer laughed saying that he has had many reports about this but it is not a "manufacturer's defect", but it will cost us $70 for each mechanism plus hundreds of dollars in labor cost. I have noted many other complaints on your website regarding this. #2 third door latch broken, also noted other complaints on your website about this.
Latch on third door breaks. Jlg.
Driver side door hangs when opened, as a result of the 2 bottom pins that hold the hinge. The consumer states that the door is designed poorly. Consumer has retrofitted with e-clips that does a much safer job. Also, the door latch mechanism falls apart.
