1 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

I have the same tailgate cable problem that every other S10 owner has. The problem is well described in the "gm special policy adjustment 06020". The dealer says my VIN is not included in the recall or "special policy adjustment" and refuses to fix it. One cable is already broke inside and just connected by the outer plastic. The other is still holding for now.

8 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 05/13/2005

My wife had hauled a load of dirt in the cargo area of our 2001 Chevrolet S10 pickup. After unloading the dirt, she was putting the tailgate back up, and the left hand side of the tailgate fell off. She was able to slide the tailgate back into place.

9 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 05/08/2005

As I opened teh tailgate to my s-10 crew cab the cable broke on both sides. There was no weight on the tailgate except the weight of the unit itself. I know the bigger trucks are recalled why are these not recalled. Looking into the broken protective coating around the cable, you can see where it is rusted thru. Please get this problem fixed before someone gets hurt.

10 Tailgate Latch problem of the 1998 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

1998 chevy s-10 pickup truck. Both tailgate cables broke while standing on tailgate resulting in a fall to the ground. Both cables are corroded at the mid point where they fold when closing the tailgate.

Failure Date: 04/24/2005

Tailgate was down fell off and I drove down the highway with it hanging on by one tailgate strap.

12 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 04/08/2005

2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup. Failure of tailgate cables. Within the past 2 months both tailgate support cables broke in the general location of the close position bend. Both cables appear to be of iron material. I know other Chevrolet trucks have a recall to replace this cable with a steel material cable. Why was the S10 not on this recall listing? it's the same cable as on units recalled? replacement cost = $90. 00 per cable plus tax or $180. 00 plus tax to replace a defective part - should not be a customer expense.

13 Tailgate Latch problem of the 1998 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 02/22/2005

Windshield wiper motor quits intermittantly , needing to go outside and wiggle wiper arm to get going. Very much a hazard during heavy rains. Should be recalled.

14 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 02/12/2005

1. Moving a television, placed into bed of chevy S10 pickup. 2. Tailgate support cables (both sides) snapped, rusted through appx middle of cables. Person resting on tailgate fell off end of truck. Slight denting of tailgate as it fell past horizontal and pressed into bumper. 3. Spoke with local dealership. They indicated other trucks on recall, not S10. Have purchased new set of cable assemblies (left and right side, can not replace just cable, as they are integrated on the latch). Have digital photos to show failed cables. Have old parts. Am trying to figure out how to remove latch bar to remove cable assemblies from tailgate at this time (3-12-05).

15 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 01/27/2005

I was crawling into the back of my 2000 sonoma highrider via the tailgate when the cables broke jaring my back.

16 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2002 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 01/15/2005

After lowering my S10 pick up truck tailgate I climbed onto it to get into the bed of the truck. Both tailgate support straps broke in the middle of the strap. This caused the tailgate to drop lower to where it hit the top of the bumper. I was on my knees and fell off the tailgate. These are under a recall for the full sized Chevrolet trucks but not the S10. Why?.

17 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

Tailgate cable broke in half on drivers side. 2001 chevy s-10 crew cab. No events leading up to failure. Potential hazard if hauling a load of lumber with tailgate down or if a person were sitting on the tailgate as it snapped. Potential injury could occur in either situation. Recall already exsists for full size cheverolet pickups using the same cable. Correcting the failure would involve the cable itself, as well as the latch on the tailgate that the cable is connected to.

18 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 12/30/2004

Consumer complained about a tailgate problem. The cables that hold the tailgate in the down position snapped. Consumer contacted the manufacturer, and was informed that there was no recall for this defect. Also, consumer provided the VIN for confirmation, but again was told that it did not apply to the vehicle in question.

19 Tailgate Latch problem of the 1998 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/25/2004

Tailgate straps broke, caused by not being galvinized.

20 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 11/13/2004

I own a 2000 s-10 Chevrolet pickup with around 39,000 miles. Both tailgate straps snapped simultaneously as I crossed a field with the tailgate in the open position. This is not a company vehicle where the tailgate is operated everyday. I do not allow heavy loads on the tailgate itself like loading or unloading an atv. It appears to me that there is a definite design flaw in this cabling. When the tailgate is closed, the coated, stranded copper wire that makes up the cable is folded back against itself. Any opening and closing causes normal, bending metal fatigue. In looking at my failed cables, it is apparent that all of the strands except for approximately ten, had failed prior to the final cable failure. Thankfully, no one was injured on my truck's cable failure; however, it is not uncommon for people to carry others working afield on the tailgate. Also, trucks are used quite often for loading materials or equipment that applies some load to this area. Either of these could result in someone's death or injury and I have found instances of both on-line. There is currently a recall on some of gm's larger trucks, but not all. Additionally, I have talked with my dealership and a gm representative and have been informed that the recall has not been extended to chevy's smaller trucks. This item needs some attention before someone else is injured or killed!!.

21 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 10/15/2004

On my 2001 S10, one tailgate support cable broke when lowering the tailgate. I have seen a recall on these cables on the full size trucks, but not the s series trucks, yet the cables are the same construction and seem to have the same widespread breakage problem. Gm refuses to warrant these cables or include them in the recall.

22 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 09/20/2004

Tailgate cable broke causing damage to the tailgate. Replaced with parts from a salvage yard.

23 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 01/21/2004

The tailgate straps rusted through and broke on both my chev S10 year model 1997 and 2001. The replacement cost is higher than the cost of the straps. , because they have increased the price with a modification that costs 6 times more than the replacement strap.

24 Tailgate Latch problem of the 1998 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 07/15/2003

Tailgate support cable failure.

25 Tailgate Latch problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 12/20/2001

See odi 755882. I own 2 2001 chev S10 LS 2 wheel drive extended cabs. Both have the same or similar problems. A. The molding along the bottom of the windows on the doors is loose and comes off easily. One of the trucks has already the moldings replaced. The windows sometimes go out of alignment and tilt out. B. The rear end clunks/clanks when shifting into reverse. No solution has been found yet. C. The tailgate on both trucks will not latch completely on the driver's side. One truck has been looked at by the dealer. The dealer said the truck would need to be repaired in a body shop. The frame and body components of the box would need to be straightened in order for the tailgate to latch properly. The repair has not been done on either truck yet. D. The most disturbing problem is the strange behavior of the brakes. Both trucks have experienced loss of braking ability. When applying the brake in a quick stop or emergency situation, the brake pedal is firm yet no braking power is felt and the truck surges forward without slowing. Both trucks have had the rear brakes lock up (the abs failed to engage). One truck had all the pads and rotors replaced at 500 miles. This corrected the loud rumbling sounds and vibrations from the brakes but did not improve the abs. The other truck now with 22,000 miles shakes violently at speeds over 40 mph when the brakes are applied. It feels like the wheels are seriously unbalanced or the rotors are badly warped. However, the rotors were checked and found to be in spec and the wheels were balanced. Still the problem continues and is intensifying daily. The shop which checked problem called gm and was told a "pulse" is normal in all vehicles with 4 wheel abs systems. I drive over 1000 miles a week. I think I know the difference between abs brakes engaging and wheels about to fly off. I have spoke with several other 2001 gm truck owners at the dealership who are all experiencing problems with their brakes.
