5 Front Seat Belt Buckle Assembly problem of the 1997 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 02/26/2003

I am an automotive forensic investigator. I have inspected this vehicle, which was involved in a rollover incident, and found the same "energy management loop" as was recalled in NHTSA recall #03v117000. The driver of this vehicle was a 29 year old gentleman, 6 foot tall and 200 pounds. He was fully ejected and fatally injured. The survival space surrounding the driver's seat had remained intact, and likely the driver would have not sustained a catastrophic injury but for the 10" of extra slack added to the safety belt system during the rollover.

6 Front Seat Belt Buckle Assembly problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 09/15/2001

Clips in the seat belt designed to keep the metal latch in place fell out, resulting in unraveling. Dealer notified and replaced seat belt. Both front seat belts also do not retract properly; on occasion, the seat belts will not pull from their housings at all.

7 Front Seat Belt Buckle Assembly problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 04/09/2001

Received recall notice 00v228003 in mail, and took vehicle to dealership. Repairs not done due to no appointment. Made an appointment, and came back on that date. Was informed by service manager that no parts were available for seat belt buckles. Contacted manufacturer, who indicated parts only sent if vehicle required it after being inspected by mechanic.

8 Front Seat Belt Buckle Assembly problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Front passenger side seatbelt, it locks up but will not unlock unless you unbuckle it. It has to be unlocked and brought all the way back before it will unlock. I have had it replaced at least three times and it still does not work correctly.

10 Front Seat Belt Buckle Assembly problem of the 1999 Chevrolet S10

Both seat belts hang on seat rear latches on driver and passagner side when door is closed and you buckle your seat belt. You do not realize that they are not properly buckled until you open a door and the belt slides over the latch to the rear of the seat. There is not enough clearance between the door and the seat when the door is closed. The belt will hang on the latch which allows too much slack in the belt. If the door is open it will not hang. This could cause severe injury because the lap section of the belt is not tight.
