The contact owns a 1997 Chevrolet S10. While driving 40 mph, the contact heard a noise coming from the vehicle. A local mechanic diagnosed the vehicle as needing the upper and lower ball joints replaced. The contact stated that the upper and lower ball joints were replaced in March of 2003. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage is 148,000 and failure mileage was 139,000.

No special events leading to failure. Lower ball joints deteriorated beyond use at 40000 miles resulting in some tire damage due to misalignment. Dealer response was "normal wear item* , not under warranty. These factory ball joints are not equipped with grease fittings, thus cannot be lubricated. Ball joints replaced with aftermarket product. Pieces of original ball joints no longer available. General motors has not responded to any emails or phone calls regarding this vehicle.

Within 12 months gm genuine balljoints (lower) on our 2001 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck failed within 12 months, possibly sooner if it were'nt for the state required motor vehicle inspections pointing it out again. Imagine that they probably failed way before the inspection. It looks like we're not the only one who has expierenced this part failure with the Chevrolet, S10.
Vehicle was making a clanking noise while driving at any speed. Vehicle was taken to the repair shop, and mechanic determined that both lower ball joints were too loose, and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified, and informed the consumer that this vehicle was not covered under a recall.
While backing into the driveway suddenly and without warning the front right side of the vehicle dropped to the ground. Two week later, on February 26, 2005, while backing around in the driveway the driver's side front dropped to the ground. On both separate times the vehicle was towed to a repair shop, and mechanic confirmed that both lower ball joints broke, and needed to be replaced. Manufacturer was not notified. He, in turn, informed the consumer that this vehicle was not covered under a recall.

On July 14, 2004 near westminster mall lower ball joint of my 2000 chevy S10 brock. I took my vehicle sears auto center which was across the street and had it fixed. According to website there were 7 incidents similar to mine.

Lower right ball joint failing uneven tire wear,34000 miles.
Failure of right front wheel bearing. In past three months have also had to replace left wheel bearing assembly and lower ball joint, as well as effected tire. Have spent over $750 in parts and labor on this vehicle for these failure in past 90 days. Mechanic says to expect problems with wheel bearings to continue in future.
Left wheel bearing assembly failure, caused brake failure (due to fraying of brake sensor). Mechanic warns this will be a recurring problem with this vehicle. Recently also had to replace lower ball joint in same vehicle.
Lower ball joint, lower control arm, one side (b) had to be replaced, along with tire (other front tire previously replaced for irregular wear); problem found upon yearly state inspection.
Lower ball joints had to be replaced on both sides or vheicle, would not have passd inspection. Three different state inspection stations confirmed it. Consumer stated GMC was contacted, but repeatively found no problem, and passed vehicle for inspection.

Lower ball joint was replaced at 38,000 miles. Currently, problem has reoccurred. Dealer notifed. Feel free to provide any further information.
Within 25,000 of purchasing the vehicle lower ball joints wore out prematurely, and were replaced. At 53,000 miles, the lower ball joints were replaced again. The cause of the premature wear had not been determined.
