Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 21 problems related to other fuel system fuel gauge (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Inaccurate fuel gauge reading at 1/4 tank or less. Since June 2001 (3,000 mi. )have complained to Chevrolet about this problem. Items replaced include sender/pump assembly. Gauges, fuel level sensor, j3630 module. In may 2002 service manager informed me this was a "self inflicted" problem, that I kept throwing it in neutral, and they were done with it. Embarrassed, I did not follow up on any more complaints. As of this date, still have problem, vehicle has over 50,000 mi. Noticed that others have had this problem, too.

Contact stated all of the gauges on the dashboard suddenly stopped working and were inaccurate. The speedometer was stuck at 100 mph. The tachometer showed a readout of zero. The fuel gauge indicated the fuel tank was empty, although there was fuel in the tank.
Fuel guage sticks in the full position all the time, this resultng in a stall vehicle on the highway requiring owner to move a disabled vehicle into the breakdown lane in the middle of a freeway. The vehicle had to be towed away.
Fuel gauge failed to register. Intermittent operation, wrong reading, failed all together. Nothing. Too expensive.

Noticed gas gauge was dropping to empty when I had a full tank of gas. Kept an eye on it and the problem became worse. Now my gas gauge does not read at all. I can be on empty and it reads that I have more than a half tank left. Severly times I have almost run out of gas due to this problem. I know have to watch my mileage and determine when I need to get gas.
Gas gauge does not work (reads empty at all times now). The vehicle was taken to the dealership where it was purchased to have the problem fixed while under warranty (under 35k mi). There's a reoccurence of the problem. In one ocassion a close call collission in a highway was barely avoided due to the innacurate gas gauge reading.
Fuel gauge did not work. Consumer experienced this problem with other gm vehicles he owned. The cause of the problem had not yet been determined.

Fuel gauge reads full when tank is only 1/4 full or less.
Gas gauge began reading "full" when only 1/4 tank or less. Now gauge is "all over the place" regardless of how much fuel is in tank. I reset the trip odometer each time I fill up so I know approximately how much fuel I have.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet s-10. When the fuel gauge reached 1/4 of a tank, it failed to go any higher and caused a miscalculation of the amount of gas in the vehicle. While driving 35 mph, the contact ran out of gas once because of the incorrect reading on the fuel gauge. The vehicle was taken to a dealer on four different occasions and the contact was informed that the failure could not be repaired. The sensors were changed, but the failure recurred. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 45,593 and failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

At 45,000 miles the fuel gauge became unstable on my 1997 s-10 pickup. The gauge indicates more fuel in the vehicle than is in the tank. The vehicle ran out of fuel during a rainstorm and once again while in interstate traffic. Inquiries indicate that this is a long-standing problem for many gm vehicles. Repair estimate to fix the gauge is $500. 00. This is certainly a safety-related issue when the vehicle stalled on the interstate.
While driving 45 vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and hadit towed to the dealer, and mechanic determined that the fuel gauge was inoperative, and needed to be replaced, and replaced it four times. However, the problem recurred.
Fuel gauge in instrument cluster not reading correctly.
Consumer states his auto has been in the shop 4 times, and each time he was told that it is a programming issue, and there is no fix for it at the present. Consumer states when his gauges reaches 1/4 of a tank the gauge drops to empty. Nlm.
Fuel gauge is not calibrated properly and apparently cant be. The extended cab s-10 LS models have 19-gallon gas tanks standard. The gauge reads full when full but seems to gauge my fuel consumption faster than I am really using it. It was most concerning the first time the light came on. I thought at first I was getting about 13 miles per gallon when half of my driving is highway. When the gauge gets down to the 1/8 tank line the fuel light comes on. When I go to the station the tank will generally take only about 13 gallons meaning there is 6 remaining in the tank. It has been consistent since I bought it and over the almost 40,000 miles Ive driven it. I still dont trust it completely and use my trip meter to gauge its accuracy. Generally I just make it a practice to refuel when the light comes on. I know I have about 3/8 of a tank remaining when that occurs.
Fuel gauge goes to full when driving regardless of fuel level. Original owner ran out of fuel once before they knew the gauge wasn't correct. This could have caused an accident and/or fatality. It also may have shortened the life of the electric fuel pump.
Gas gauge reads full with less than 1/2 tank. I also own 2000 blazer with the same problem. Reset the trip odometer after fill-up with both of them.
The fuel gauge on my 1997 s-10 extended cab truck does not work. The needle remains on the full position. I noticed the gauge was erratic prior to the warranty expiring, but I forgot it, so unfortunately no recorded complaint was availale when it ceased to operate. I am aware that this is a problem on other s-10 vehicles. In fact I owned a 1983 silverado and the fuel gauge on it did not work. I determine when to refuel by use of the odometer.
Fuel level sensor/sender unit failed. Mjs.
Ongoing problem with vehicle fuel gauge registering incorrectley. Dealer notified and informed consumer that the repairs would be done at consumer's cost.
