Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 NHTSA action number: pe05020 past recall fix by general motors was done incorrectly. Front sensors for the abs system become dirty because of bad seals in the hub assembly. Original fix only provided maintenance to the problem not a permanent fix. At low speeds the abs system kicks in when you put your foot on the brake petal.

2 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2005

The contact stated the rear wheel shields deteriorated, causing the brake pads and rotors to wear out. He contacted the dealership, and they told him this was a common problem with this type. Of vehicle. The dealership replaced the brake pads and rotors at the consumers expense. The manufacturer was contacted, who wanted more information on the problem and receipts of any repair work done on the vehicle. The sensors wer replaced on 12-16-05 . Updated 01/11/06.

3 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

2000 Chevrolet Silverado lost brakes due to the flex pipe rubbing the right front wheel. February 2001 the consumer received a recall for clearance condition between the front right brake pipe and the body cross sill (00v345000). On oct 14, 2003 the front brake pads and rotors had to be replaced. The vehicle had 75155 miles. On Nov 9, 2005 another recall was received in reference to rust on the front wheel sensors (05v379000). After repair and less than 100 miles later the brakes failed due to the flex pipe rubbing the right front wheel. Emergency brake had to be adjusted. The consumer believes that when the recall work was done some how they got the flex line against the wheel causing the brakes to fail. The consumer is convinced that the dealer never did the recall for the right brake pipe.

4 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2005

The contact states received a recall notice concerning abs brakes. He had recall repairs performed, but it did not correct the problem. The service dealer said they did what was required on the recall notice. The dealer claimed the problem was due to the brake pads and rotors being low. The manufacturer said the service dealer performed the recall service as indicated on the notice. Updated 12/7/2005. The vehicle would not stop between 4-10 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer claimed they cleaned the abs sensor . While the consumer was leaving the dealer the vehicle would not stop when the brakes were applied. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the technician said there was nothing else they could do. The consumer called the manufacturer and was told to take the vehicle to another dealer. The vehicle was taken to another dealer who determined that the first dealer never cleaned the left sensor. Since the left sensor has been cleaned the brakes work perfectly.

5 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2005

Problem: abs brake activation at low speed. It takes longer to stop causing safety concerns here. Brought in to shop and they thought could fix the problem by removing and cleaning sensors and surrounding area due to excessive rust build up. They wound up replacing both sensors. A very costly repair. I am aware of your recall on this problem but gm says my vehicle is not affected even though it is in the affected vehicle manufacturer date. Very disappointed in gm's response.

6 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2005

Dt:the contact stated the abs brakes activated at low speeds. The dealership said that the sensors were bad. There was a recall, but not for the state that the contact lived in. He contacted the manufacturer's complaint department, and they told him that this vehicle was built in canada and was not included in the recall. Updated 11/29/2005 -.

7 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2005

Failure of 3 brake components within 3 1/2 months, including replacement of all 4 rotors due to their having rusted out, 2 front abs sensors, and immediately thereafter we are advised that the brake lines have rusted out (not yet replaced); neither the dealer nor the manufacturer will discuss with us, state that this is environmental, notwithstanding that our other (and older) vehicles have never had anything like this; we have been stone walled by the dealer and gm. Truck is presently inoperable due to no brakes! nm.

8 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2005

The consumer stated the abs activated when the brakes were applied. He felt a pulsation in the brake pedal. There were two repairs done to try to correct the problem . One repair consisted of cleaning the abs sensors. This did not correct the problem with the brakes. During the second repair the dealer replaced the abs sensor. The replacement of the abs sensor seemed to have corrected the problem. The consumers vehicle was not included in NHTSA recall 05v379000 for the abs because he did not live in the states that were the recall was issued. Updated 12/07/05.

9 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2005

2000 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up has been having brake problems and is getting worse. Truck has a defect with the antilock brake sensor that is know to gm. There was an announcement on the news about a recall on brakes for gm trucks and suvs. According to information on the internet the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado is part of that recall. When I called the dealer to get it fixed they said an "official" recall hasn't been made yet. I told them that I have already been experiencing problems with the brakes and was almost in an accident due to this. They said to bring it in. When the dealership called gm for authorization to repair the vehicle gm refused to authorize truck to be repaired because "the recall is not going out until November". This is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed now. The truck is becoming unsafe to drive. Gm has already made it public that there will be a recall due to this problem. They should take responsibility for this problem and repair vehicles that are currently experiencing brake problems before someone gets into a serious accident because of it.

10 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2005

2000 chevy Silverado brakes - vehicle has less than 50,000 miles and I started having brake problems - the brake pedal will kick back as if the abs goes on when I am stopping at a stop sign, etc -- starting occurring more frequently so I decided to change the brake pads in the rear. To my surprise the left rear rotor and backing plate were totally rusted through and that brake pad was worn down almost completely while the right rear rotor/backing plate and brake pad were almost new?? I went ahead and put on the new brake pads but this did not cure the problem. I now am going to take it in to the brake shop where I suspect I will need a new rotor/backing plate and abs sensor on the left rear. I doubt this is due to salt as if it was, it would occur on either both sides or the drivers side more than the passenger side, don't you?? as well, I live in a county that doesn't use straight salt and do little to no city driving.

11 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2005

After narrowly avoiding an accident, I noticed that the abs would activate in the last ten feet or so when stopping my 2000 cheverolet Silverado pickup truck. VIN 1gcek14t3yz134700. I took the truck to the gm dealership and reported the incidents and requested repair. The service department of brenengen cheverlet, west salem wisconsin found a gm bulletin on the problem and followed the instructions contained therein and cleaned the abs sensor mounts which corrected the problem. I have read in the local newspaper about a possible recall of some gm vehicles. So far this recall has not been released in the state of wisconsin, but certainly there is an ongoing problem that needs immediate attention and action to correct this problem. I am convinced from my experience, that this situation will cause or has caused many accidents/incidents in the state of wisconsin.

12 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2005

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that when applying the brakes from 10 mph or less, the brakes would abnormally lock. The dealer recommended replacing the sensors at the contact's expense. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under an unknown recall where the dealer cleaned the brake sensors. The contact was under the impression that the brake sensors should have been replaced under the recall. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 64,000. Updated 12/01/10 updated 12/07/10.

13 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2005

I have a 2000 Silverado 4x4 that has the corrosion problem with the front abs sensor, as do many other people despite gm's refusal to admit the problem in the united states. . . Somehow it evidently only happens in canada. Anyway, I cannot stop less than 7-8 mph most of the time without multiple pumps of the brakes. I dropped my truck off at serra cheverelet in hudsonville michigan this morning (to have the guy tell me "it is very rare in the us, it generally happens in northern canada" which sounded like it was straight out of a "what to say" pamphlet from gm). The dealership just told me it will be over $950 to replace the front to abs sensors and that it is needed because they can't be cleaned. Rest assured, I was told the new parts are guaranteed for life. . . Well what about the lowest-bidder crap they installed at the factory? why isn't that guaranteed for life, seeing how it's malfunction can cause life-threatening accidents. In short, please add another number to the statistics for this complaint.

14 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2005

I own a 2000 chevy Silverado. While traveling at low speeds the anti-lock brake system activates which makes it harder to stop the vehicle. I have had several near misses because this defect has affected stopping distances. Gm is aware of the problem with the faulty abs sensors. I know that there was a recall in canada but they haven't done a recall in the us. I talked to a mechanic at a chevy dealership who stated that it would cost hundreds of dollars to fix the sensors. I am on a fixed income. It should be their responsibility due to the faulty sensors. This defect is jeopardizing people's lives. I can't drive my children in the vehicle because I fear for their safety.

15 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2005

Dt: contact states: he is complaining about the abs braking problem that is currently being investigated by gm. He has had an accident involving the abs problem. He was going approx. 33 mph when he applied the brakes after slowing down to approx. 11 mph and he did not have any brakes. He glided into the car in front of him. The dealer repaired the vehicle. Gm paid for the repair cost and the rental car; but he wants the damage done to his car paid for by gm. He has had problems before this. He had new brakes and rotors put on at 45,000 miles. The anti-lock brake system (abs) failed due to corroded brake sensors.

16 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2005

The contact stated the abs sensor has been replaced twice. This failure almost caused two accidents. Both abs sensors malfunctioned within 10,000 miles. The dealership replaced the first sensor because it was oxidized to the hub assembly. The second sensor was cleaned. There was a NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti lock brakes, but the contact's state was not included in the recall. The tire were cupped and had to be replaced due to a vibration coming from the vehicle. Updated 01/11/06.

17 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2005

My 2000 Silverado pickup truck had the bad brake sensor in the front wheel. As I would roll to a stop the abs system would activate and I would have to push on the brake pedal with both feet to stop. I never got in an accident, but had several scary moments before the truck stopped. I got the sensor replaced and it fixed the problem gm should have covered the repair, it is a bad safety issue.

18 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2004

2000 chevy Silverado, problems with brakes. When applied brakes they went to floor and had to pump brake pedal to stop. It took a long distance to stop. Mechanic said that they he had several repairs of this kind and brake sensor failed that was in hub assembly.

19 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2004

While driving and when hitting the brakes vehicle continuously kept moving. Consumer took the vehicle to dealer to be looked at. However, the sensor light did not illuminate. Found that it was the abs system.

20 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2004

I have started to experience a problem with my abs system on my 2000 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado. When the brakes are applied at slow speeds the anti look brakes will activate and braking is lost for a moment. Upon further research I found that the cause of this is dirt getting into the fron abs sensors. I also discovered this is a very common problem for the Silverado.

21 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2004

Intermittently the brake pedal would become stiff and lock up when braking 5-65 mph. At 60,000 miles the vehicle was taken to a repair shop. The mechanic cleaned both abs sensors. Now at 70,000 miles, the problem had returned.

22 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

The consumer states that 2000 Chevrolet Silverado is having problems with the abs brake system at low speeds. When traveling at low speeds the abs would activate and the truck would not slow down correctly. This resulted in extended stopping distance. The owner took vehicle to a repair shop, and the mechanic cleaned both front sensors and reinstalled them, and then road tested. The truck was fine at this point. The owner wanted reimbursement from Chevrolet for repair work.

23 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2004

The consumer states that his 2000 chevy Silverado is making noise from the brakes. The brake sensor was failing and not working correctly. This has been a problem for several months. And three months ago the owner had $700. 00 worth of work done to the vehicle concerning the brake issue. The dealer has not been cooperative in dealing with this matter. Right now the brakes are not working correctly and this is the third occasion. All work has been performed by the dealership or certified repair shop. The owner has not talked to Chevrolet. The dealer checked for any recalls, and said he would get back in touch with the owner of the vehicle. At this point, the dealer has not called back. The rotors and pads were replaced on October 6, 2004. The brake pedal felt spongy and making a funny towards the end of a stop. And then the problem persisted and the vehicle failed to stop on April 14, 2005. On April 15, 2005, the dealership did $667. 16 worth of brake repair work. The dealership said that it had to do with the abs sensor. The consumer was told about the service bulletin about the abs that the dealership knew about. Right now the brake pedal has a spongy feel to it. To the point that the pedal has to be mashed to the floor before the vehicle will completely stop. The consumer keeps trying to get the problem fixed but it seems to be recurring.

24 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2004

Abs sensor engages at low speeds every single time the brakes are applied between 3 mph and 10 mph. Multiple replacements, and recall warranty have not fixed this issue. Lawyers are being contacted.

25 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2004

The brakes continued to fail so I proceeded to have the brakes replaced. Then the anti-lock system began to fail on a regular basis. I had that system cleaned, that did not solve the problem, so I had the wheel bearings and sensors replaced. That solved my problems.

26 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2004

June of 2004 contact states at 30000 miles the brake sensor went bad, brakes failed, dealer replaced brake sensor on left wheel then two months 32000 miles replaced front brake sensor, left and right. Barely avoided crashing into garage due to vehicle. Vehicle is regularly serviced and contact has service records.

27 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

Have not wrecked yet but have had many close calls because my truck needs a longer stopping distance because of the anti lock brakes. Numerous times I have almost hit vechicles because I could not stop. Reported the problem to gm and to my dealer they tell me they are looking into the problem. In the meantime they tell me to clean the sensors on the antilock brakes. This does not work. Still have the problem. This problem started about a year ago.

28 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2004

2000 chevy Silverado. A while back I had a problem with the anti-lock brakes. They would engage at low speed and make it near impossible to stop. A mechanic friend told me that it was because of corrosion under the antilock sensors in the front wheel. He cleaned this area and the problem was gone. Now the problem has returned. This has to be a safety violation on behave of chevy.

29 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2003

Failure of the antilock braking system at speeds below 10 mph due to a buildup of corrosion on the abs sensors. Repairs were not covered under warranty and cost approximately $145. Vehicle had to be towed to the rapair shop after nearly rear ending a parked automobile. June, 2005: problem returned and is still not coveredunder warenty or vehicle recall even though a recall has been mandated by the canadian government to correct this problem. Milage on the vehicle as of present time is approximately 53,500.

30 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2003

I own a 2000 chevy Silverado 4x4. I have a continuing problem with the anti lock brake system. The truck has a problem stopping at slow speeds. When I depress the brake pedal at slow speed to stop the anti locks start to release as if the wheels were locking up. This causes me to either go thru the stop sign or to come very close to running into what ever is in front of me. The brakes eventually stop the truck but I have had some close calls. The truck has been to the dealer and had a right front wheel sensor replaced. This helped at first. The problem has started to surface again. I will have to make another visit to the dealer, which is very costly, $300 + per visit. This problem occurs without warning is very dangerous. Does the nhtsb plan on doing anything about this problem? I know of a coworker that has had the same problem and almost wreaked his truck. Thanks et.

31 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

The consumer wa shaving an ongoing problem with the abs sensor on a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. The abs engaged falsely, and was kicked in every time consumer came to stop. It pulsated when it didn't not need to. This happened for about a year then consumer replaced the sensors. However, problem recurred. The vehicle will not stop. The brakes were making a grinding sound. While consumer was pulling into a parking lot vehicle was involved in a crash on 7-30-2005 because the brakes would not stop. The owner was pulling into a parking lot. There were no injuries reported. A police report was available.

32 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2003

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle would not stop. The vehicle proceeded to slow down at a very slow pace. He was able to maneuver the vehicle off the highway and drove to a local service station. The mechanic stated that the rear brakes failed. The rotors, caliper, and 4 wheel drive brake discs were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the front and rear pads were replaced. It was also discovered that the front rotors were warped and the oxygen sensor was replaced. The contact has been in five crashes due to the brake failure. While depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle would not stop. The manufacturer offered $1,000 toward the purchase of a new vehicle. The failure mileage was 26,000 and current mileage was 61,000.

33 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2002

The consumer states that 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was having a problem with the abs system. When the consumer pressed down on the brakes they sounded like they were grinding. The abs was engaged at low speeds. The vehicle has been checked by a repair shop, and was having the sensors cleaned. The consumer has been in contact with gm, and they said that they did not have a recall. The consumer has replaced the rotors and pads. The speed was 10 mph or below.

34 Brake Sensor problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2000

The abs system operates at low speeds (5 to 10 mph) on dry pavement resulting in extremely long stopping distances. I called my dealer and they are well aware of the problem. They clam that it is due to a batch of faulty sensors that gm was supplied. So why should the consumer get left holding the bag. Why is no recall being done to correct this issue. I feel that an investigation is strongly needed. This is oviously a manufacture defect (extremely widespread).

35 Brake Sensor problem

The anti-lock brakes activated at very low speeds. The pedal moved upward and driver pushed the brake pedal with force but the brakes did not respond. The left front brakes failed 100% of the time and the right front assembly failed intermittently. Both front wheel bearing assembly/sensors were replaced. The brake pedal had become hard as a rock and would not stop until both feet were pushed with maximum force.
