6 Spare Tire problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/30/2009

I was driving my 2007 chevy Silverado 1500 at about 40 mph when I felt a large bump. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw something flying in the air about 20 feet off the ground behind me. When I started to pull over, it bounced several times in about 20' high bounds and started rolling at me with significant velocity. That's when I realized that it was my spare tire that fell off from underneath my truck. I barely moved out of the way of the rolling tire before it hit me. It continued rolling through a busy intersection nearly hitting three cars and a pedestrian. It bounced off a brick wall and came back through the intersection and finally stopped in the middle. I retrieved the tire and found that the entire hoist and tire assembly is only secured with one small bolt. The bolt was still in the chassis, but the bracket it was holding was literally ripped away from the bolt. I am an engineer and after doing a few rough calculations, I found that this is a serious design flaw that will result in serious injuries or deaths, if it hasn't already. It is imperative that the manufacturer correct this as soon as possible.
