1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

While turning the steering wheel, I could feel a clunking, as though the linkage was very loose. I talked with the chevy dealer, and they were aware of the symptom and it was in the steering column. They said it was cosmetic, but did not affect safety. They said it would cost about $275 to fix it, but it is not clear if that would be just a temporary fix. Sometimes, this symptom also appears while driving straight ahead, but most often while in a turn, particularly at lower speeds.

2 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2007

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph over uneven pavement the steering column began to rattle. In addition, the odometer failed to operate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the instrument cluster was replaced. The steering column shaft was placed on order. The vehicle will be repaired when the part becomes available. In 2006, the steering column shaft was replaced and the failure recently recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.
