While driving on a rural country road I soundly and without warnong lost my power brakes and steering. . Steering was very difficult and brakes were almost not functional. I took a great effort to turn the steering wheel and apply the brakes to safely stop the vehicle. If I was traveling in traffic at highway speeds I could not control and safely stop the vehicle. . I immediately parked the vehicle and had it towed to a nearby dealership. The power steering pump was replaced. So the power steering pump malfunctioned (broken shaft) while the vehicle was underway. . The power steering malfunction affected both the power steering and brakes and there was no warning. I feel this is a poor design. Minimally there should be some sort of warning when the power steering and or power brakes are compromised. As I understand it this same issue occurs when the serpentine belt fails. The belt will fail when the belt tensioner does. Again no warning when this occurs.

When making a turn at low speed, the power steering goes off. It is then almost impossible to turn. It did this several times. I took it to a dealer, and they replaced the power steering pump. They said it was putting out 1150 psi and it should be 1700-1800 psi. The problem came back the next day. I will take back to dealer.

I have a 2008 k2500 diesel. The vehicle is used strictly for camping and has only 24,000 miles. Over thanksgiving,I parked vehicle in an off road park. After 2 days parked, I started the truck and had no steering or brakes at all. This had happened several times before but not as bad. After a few minutes idling, steering and brakes came back to normal. I researched the web and found this to be a common problem. Gm has issued several tsbs on the subject and the claim it is "normal" on 2500 series trucks. Nhtsa has also chimed in with NHTSA id number: 10335581. I took the truck into william l. Morris Chevrolet in simi valley, CA. The service writer ignored any of my research, the tsbs and the NHTSA info. Instead, they want me to pay $780 to replace the power steering pump, when gm says it is a normal condition. I believe one of 2 things - we have a serious problem that will eventually hurt someone or they are duping people into an unnecessary expense in replacing the pump. I am an mech engineer. I asked them to show me the results of the pressure test and they could/would not. I asked how they arrived at their conclusion and was told "years of experience". I have 14+ years of experience with hydraulic pumps and am quite sure the pump ias just fine - maybe underdriven but otherwise fine.

The contact owned a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited and abnormal pop when first started. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure but advised having the power steering pump replaced. The power steering pump was replaced but the failure persisted. The power steering pump was replaced twice but to no avail. The failure was never corrected and the contact traded the vehicle in for another vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000. The VIN was not available.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd (na). While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact began to apply the brakes to make a right turn. While turning with his foot on the brake, the contact noticed that it took extreme effort to steering the vehicle and apply the brakes. The contact pulled over and noticed that there was a hose leaking which was connected to the power steering pump. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who stated that the vehicle was not included in recall 05v455000 (steering: hydraulic power assist: hose, piping, and connections). The current and failure mileages were approximately 90,000.

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while trying to depress the brake pedal to stop at a 4-way stop sign, the brakes applied "hard" as if he had made a panic stop. As he was leaving the 4-way stop and driving up a hill, he tried to turn the corner and had much difficulty doing so. He heard a popping sound and the difficulty continued. However, a short time later, the steering seemed to correct itself. The contact took the vehicle to the dealership but was told that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The contact felt that the power brake that was hooked to the power steering may have contributed to the failure and maybe the power steering pump may have been faulty. He had not called the manufacturer to-date. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 6,500. The failure mileage was approximately 6,400.

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. On March 2, 2007, while driving 70m ph the contact noticed oncoming traffic, and when attempting to apply the brakes they failed. The contact was unable to gain control of the steering wheel. The dealer advised the contact that there was a line in the power steering booster that caused the failure. The manufacturer stated that there was nothing they could do to assist the contact with the repairs. The current and failure mileage was 70,000. Updated 04/05/07.
Power steering pump went out at 20,000 miles . Even at these low miles gm wouldn't cover it because it was out of warranty 5/05. But they wouldn't pay because I use the truck for plowing I. E truck came from factory set up to have plow installed. Said plow was reason for pump failure.
