Chevrolet Silverado 3500 owners have reported 5 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Silverado 3500 based on all problems reported for the Silverado 3500.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet silverado. The contact stated that last week while he was driving 45 mph he applied the brakes and the abs malfunctioned. The brakes locked and caused him to continue driving through an intersection. A local mechanic replaced the brakes which did not solve the problem. The vehicle was at the dealership when the complaint was filed. The technician stated that two speed sensors caused the failure to occur. The vehicle will be repaired at the owners expense. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000. The current mileage was approximately 49,500.

Under normal braking conditions the anti lock braking system will activate at low speed, around 7-10 miles per hour. Contacted local dealer and they told me it was typically the wheel speed sensor that causes this problem. There was a recall issued by gm but my truck did not fall in this recall due to the VIN number. Wheel speed sensors were replaced to fix this issue.

: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at 10 mph, the antilock brakes activated under normal conditions and there was an increased stopping distance. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the wheel speed sensors were corrosive and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was exposed to excessive roads salts during the winter months. There was a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The manufacturer was alerted.
: the contact stated while driving 7 mph on normal road conditions, there was no braking action when trying to stop. No warning lights were illuminated to alert the driver. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who indicated the antilock brake system (abs) had a recall # 05v379000 regarding service brakes, hydraulic:antilock, for those vehicles due to a speed sensor failure. All vehicles operated in salt belt states may be affected. The manufacturer was contacted, and indicated the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN, and the company was not responsible for the repair cost. The speed sensor, which was the affected component of the abs, was manufactured in the same plant for all general motors vehicles. The contact expressed concern because a copy of the complaint taken back in August was never received.
I have a 2003 chevy k3500 silverado truck, with about 60,000 miles. As of December 2010, I have suffered two brake line failures due to corrosion, wherein a steel rigid brake line rusted completely through, resulting in brake loss. I live in ohio, and salt is used on roads, however, in my 30 years of driving, I have never had another vehicle, regardless of age or miles, which suffered a catastrophic failure of the steel brake lines. In both cases of failure, I was lucky in that I was not in a heavy pressure situation, and luckily avoided accidents. I have now largely replaced the entire brake line infrastructure of the truck, at considerable personal time and expense, however, problems still include the fact that corrosion continuously affects the performance of the front wheel speed sensors as they input to the abs system. They constantly fail to sense wheel speed at lower speeds which results in erroneous activation of the abs action. The sensors were replaced once at 30,000 miles, and they lasted about 15,000 miles before going bad again. This compares to a 2004 Toyota sienna minivan which was sold a few months ago at 215,000 miles with zero problems, both with respect to steel brake line integrity as well as abs sensor integrity. I consider the brake system on the 2003 silverado truck to be of very questionable integrity.
